Sony need to work on their image processing. Its too heavy-handed. Or at least provide the option to shoot RAW. I'm pretty sure unedited, the Z1 will produce better shots. Sony still has a shitty image processing algorithm on their phones though it seems.

Hopefully an update resolves the teething issues.

^it has improved over previous devices and it has all the potential to get even better with updates. as it is, it still produces great shots (you can see them in the photo thread). vast improvement over prior devices, i think.

@nzrocketman has hihihans said.. try everything!! the fun is getting to know all the various settings and seeing how it effects the photos you get. it's the only way you'll learn how to get the most out of this camera of course you can always just rely on superior auto.. it should do a really good job on a bright and sunny day.

congrats on your Z1 btw. i know you were concerned about the screen before.. how is it?

Hey guys, i just saw a review saying the z1 doesnt have optical stabilization for photos . I saw optical stabilization on video only (on gsmarena.com). Is this true?

yes and probably not true.

still images have digital image stabilization through the use of ISO (that's not a typo).

video recording uses SteadyShot, and there are many types that Sony has developed. Though, it seems the one used in the Z1 is likely a digital type and not a hardware type. That being said, it works very well as is evident in the video samples. So well, that it is comparable if not better than phones with OIS.

the screen its alright. wouldn't complain about it other than looking in bright light its hard to see where my Lumia 920 i could. no yellow hue that i can tell. I try to add 6 blue on the screen adjuster and i couldn't see any difference.

Looking at the photos and video on the screen is brilliant though.

Reception is a bit of a hit an miss which i didn't have on my Lumia either. the battery seems to be going down a bit fast but i wont make judgement on that till have a couple cycles as im being playing around with it

Ill see how to reception goes over next day.

Im not use to android so i'm trying to learn everything. being trying to take the vibrate when you writing a txt off but that doesn't seem to work

^its in the input settings for the keyboard.

Settings > Language & Input > Xperia Keyboard > Sound and Vibrate

Uncheck the box for Vibration on keypress.

Screen - i haven't had any trouble seeing the screen in daylight. Make sure it's at full brightness and the automatic detection is turned OFF. It will allow you to get the FULL brightness of the screen.

As far as the battery, it will definitely get better with time. I have 65% battery left right now after 1 day 4.5 hours on battery power with 1.5 hours of screen time. I've had a few calls and a lot of text messages. Nothing major, but that's my normal usage. I don't do a lot of heavy web surfing or gaming or anything like that. That is with stamina mode.

I have not had any issues with reception.. but i'm sure that varies by area and carrier. hopefully it will get better for you.

Look forward to seeing the photos you snap

the only things i let notify me are texts and emails (i use gmail with priority inbox).

everything else gets shut off with stamina mode.

I've been reading this thread religiously since its beginning and can finally add some input after 24-hours of playing with my newly arrived Z1. My initial reaction was that i'd lost in the screen lottery. While the ppi improvement over my XS was immediately obvious, the colours were less vibrant and it wasn't as bright. Even with brightness turned on full it seemed ok, but nothing special. It was only when I played around with the screen settings that I got it to truly shine. I'm very happy with the screen.

I was disappointed there were no headphones in the box. I'm also a o2 UK customer.

The call quality is a vast improvement over the XS. The first call I took was almost deafening and I had to stop the call to turn the sound down. The caller also said, before I mentioned the new phone, that I sounded clearer than normal. I loved my XS, but the call quality was poor.

The size of the phone isn't an issue for me, though I am a giant with massive hands - so no surprises there. Though I do keep automatically thinking the headphone jack is the power switch!

The phone is much quicker and less laggy than the XS. Although the screen does re-draw when exiting the camera app. I've not had chance to take any pictures yet, but immediately noticed that I'll have to change the way I hold the phone to take pictures, as my finger is slightly obscuring the lens. I'm not sure about the lens positioning.

The mobile signal is much better than my XS. A 3g speed test immediately after using my XS was 50% better. Can't explain that. The wi-fi seems much better as well.

My first Sony phone was the T68i - which I still think was the best looking phone ever - but it's amazing how technology has moved on in those 11 years. If anyone has concerns about the Z1 from any of the review - don't. It's without doubt a wonderful phone.
