P990 vs HTC TyTn |

@sleepyhead, i think Masseur often refers to 'implementation of WM5', which is the correct description as WM5 was very badly implemented on the HTC Universal and I and others had many problems for about 2 months until a new version of WM5 was released (a bit like the P990 at the moment ). The JasJar was worst than the XDA Exec.
In terms of speed, stability, size & weight the TyTN is a significant step ahead over the Universal. I keep mentioning the Universal as this is the only other 3G/wifi capable HTC running WM5 and therefore perhaps a better indication of the progress of the HTC/WM5 platform.

offtopic a bit
Bought a K800 for my mother-in-law (she's okay really!)
Have been playing with a bit and I am astonished with the quality of the device and the screen. Sorry Masseur, the screen on the K800 is much better than the one on the TyTN I've been using. Also I can now see what SE are trying to do with the flip closed menus of the P990 - they're trying to make all their devices have a similar look an feel. This probably explains why the P990 feels less like a computer than say a WM5 device. I think we will continue to see a divergence between SE's application of Symbian/UIQ3 and HTC's applicaiton of WM5 in that I think WM5 will appeal more to power users and the P990 and other UIQ3 devices will be for people that just need a little 'Smart' in thier phone while WM5 will have a lot more potential for 'Smartness'. I think the replacement for the Nokia 9500 may be one of the last truely Smartphones based on Symbian. The market for less Smartphones is bigger than the market for really smart Smart phones!

Yes jah,
I would want my TyTN to work on the plane with, but I would want to get my P990 in my hands as soon as I got off the plane... |

What is extremely interesting however is that it is more than evident thaty HTC have really closed the gap on the P series as the windows devices keep evolving..
The next generation HTC machines look as though they have improved design, reduced weight and mote multemedia capabilities..Apparently the gap may become even smaller..
Having said all this i still feel there is no device out there as we speak that would take me away from the P990. And if the stability /memory thing improves further this will be a real winner..The UIQ platform is now evolving and is here to stay in my view..I personally find it a joy to play with.. |

Hi all, excellent thread!
I have a question for Tytn owners. I have never owned a WM5 device but the Tytn has finally taken away my desire for the P990. Does the Tytn allow users to update the firmware themselves like SEUS??? What differences are there between updating WM5 and UIQ3???
Thanks! |

yes, WM5 can be updated yourself.
The difference with the update SE phones is that they are done while you have an internet connection whereas with WM devices you download a program yourself and then simply run it as you would any other program.

Wow thanks for the quick reply!
Are the updates for the Tytn are downloaded from the HTC website or from microsoft? If I were to buy a branded unit like from t-mobile, will this effect my update entitlement? One last question, how often is WM5 being updated compared to UIQ? as from my experience SE do provide many frequent fixes.
Thanks again! |

you download updates from the manufacturer, not from microsoft, so if you buy a branded unit then you have to wait for them to release and update
In my 10 months with the k-jam, for example, I had 3 updates. 2 were k-jam bug fixes and the 3rd was the AKU2 major update from Microsoft (which still had to be adapted by k-jam for use in their devices)
SE generally release a few more updates, especially in the early days of a product. I've done 2 on the M600 in the last month!

Thank you very much for your information Masseur, greatly appreciated!
Being able to update the firmware myself was the only hurdle left for me in deciding to buy the Tytn over the P990, so I'm glad to have finally settled this. Its a shame that if I were to buy a t-mobile version, I would be depending on them for updates, so I'm gona buy a simfree unit now. I hope that I will be happy with WM5 as its about time I should experience it. Otherwise I will return to SE with its P990. After all these years with my P800 and P910, I fancy a change and I have heard great things about the Tytn.
I will let you guys know how I get on with the Tytn, especially to the guys who are in a similar position as me, i.e. loved UIQ but would like to try WM5 as the P990 does not sound to be much improvement. |

@bbasra
Have you pressed a keyboard key (in low light) to activate the keboard light? - it doesn't come on automatically.

Bigpengu888....
I haven't tried it myself, but from reading some of the posts over at xda-developers it appears that its possible to unlock the phone and flash it to any brand of firmware once unlocked.
Still very happy with my M3100 (although I do feel kind of sad about moving away from SE devices after all these years) in fact the only thing I miss compared to my old 900 at the moment is the Krusell 'Dynamic' case I used to keep the thing in - if anyone knows of a similar one for the TyTn please let me know
