I'm no pro at this but lets work out this picture-quality business. By (my) logic the image passes thru the lens, is "perceived" by the many sensors, processed, and saved. Therefore quality of lens, sensitivity of these sensors (build of module), number of these sensors (resolution), the colour management etc (processor) all affect the quality, to name a few.
You're right - 7mb really is quite a lot for the norm crowd. For me I'm looking for minimum 4R prints so ~3+mp will suffice. Will be happy with a mega-mp only if the quality and colours turn out right on big prints. (Sony's quite good at this, so I'm hoping they'll develop these well)
