I'm partial to the very occasional wee dram myself.

To be fair, Scots, especially those of us from the West, have a tendency to speak rather quickly, which can be difficult to understand. It is even more difficult if someone has a strong accent.
English people, more so in the South, speak more slowly. Having said that, if you are speaking with someone who has a heavy regional accent, from anywhere in the UK, it can be hard to make out what they are saying.

Scotland has a wealth of accents, it isn't always easy to understand fellow Scots. Of course some Scots don't even speak English, making it all but impossible to understand them!

In my old job, i dealt with a lot of customers. A conversation like this would go on 4 times a day....
"Can i speak to the gentleman that phoned me earlier?"
"certianly, who was it you were speaking to?"
"Dunno, he was scottish...was it you?"
That outruled the german woman in accounts, then.
"Theres quite a few scots work here, are you sure you dont remember a name?"
"REALLY?!?! How come theres so many scots?"
"We are in Scotland"
"Wow thats amazing...bet its cold where you are"
"No."
"How do you get my stuff all the way down here so quickly? Its AMAZING"
Customer is in Liverpool...
"Courier, its a UK next day service"
"wow, they must be good, shipping all the way from scotland to the uk that quickly. Anyway, can i speak to the scottish bloke?"

Some glaswegians are completely understandable! and i often find myself using several different styles of speech at work delling with customers,
i can go from being a non educated delinquent to a very well spoke young man, within seconds, lol the joys of the scots accent!

The only accent I have bother with is the Aberdonian's esp. Fraserburgh and Peterhead - got clients up there and I'm the only one in the office who can understand them!

Being bored one evening I switched on the television and was greeted with an overly familiar half hour of nonsense, otherwise known as River City. The Aberdonian woman on that has a very strong accent, which isn't helped very much by the fact that the producers have obviously decided that the best way to attract viewers is to allow her to use Aberdonian slang so as to make her incomprehensible to the majority of the population, thus disguising the awful dialogue.

Never heard of River City (guess it's Glasgow based) thanks for the warning if I were ever to stumble upon it.
