No point in contemplating one for a christmas present. There's only 200,000 available at launch. That's if they don't delay it as well, what with them delaying gt4 till after christmas in japan now. Importmadness.co.uk are offering the nintendo ds on preorder for £99 right now.

According to the Taiwanese newspaper Economic Daily News (EDN), Sony plans to sell over 3 mln of its portable game consoles Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) in the 1Q 2005,Mitac Precision Technology (MPT), the company of Mitac Group, will assist; it has recently got the order to make chassis for Sony PSP.

The initial shipments volume of chassis for PSP by MPT will amount to 700 000 units per month, the company plans to produce 10 mln sets over the year. MPT representatives say that their shipments will cover only 70% of Sony’s demand, the rest orders will be placed with other makers.

At the moment we don’t know which Taiwanese company will equip PSP, according to some early data the candidates are Foxconn Electronics and Asustek Computer – both these companies now produce the Sony PS2.

@BOSSHOGG
Yeah, they may have released the DS, but Penny Arcade have it and are definitely not impressed. Chunky, badly implemented touch screen etc. So they, like I, am holding out for the PSP.

I trust those guys too, they seem to have made some good decisions in the past. Except about the big Xbox controllers. I liked them.....

According to The Register this morning:

Sony selects 25 March 05 for Euro PSP launch
By Tony Smith
Published Thursday 2nd December 2004 11:42 GMT

Sony will launch the PlayStation Portable (PSP) in Europe on 25 March 2005, according to the company's own retailer-oriented sales and marketing documentation.

So notes UK website Spong, which claims to have seen said "official" information.

That Sony has been planning to ship PSP over here by the end of Q1 2005 is no great surprise. Certainly, the company's recent annual strategy meeting featured a company roadmap which clearly pegged the handheld's US and European release to late fiscal 2004 - Sony's current financial year ends 31 March 2005, six days after the European launch date cited by Spong.

That said, back in May this year, reports were pointing to 18 March 2005 as the date for PSP's European debut. Both dates are Fridays, a traditional release day for games consoles. The new date is only a week after the old one, giving Sony seven extra days to punch out more PSPs from its production plants.

Sony rival Nintendo will announce the European release date for its DS handheld console early next month. Again, DS' launch date was previously reported as taking place on 18 March 2005, so Sony may well have moved its own date to avoid a clash.

Spong claims that Sony is already pitching PSP to retailers and is touting the idea that they give over shelf space exclusively to the new console. What Sony is offering in return - if indeed it is proffering such a plan - is not known.

Nintendo launched DS in Japan yesterday, and said that the US launch, which took place on Monday, 29 November had seen 500,000 units sold within the first week.

It’s already tomorrow in Japan, which means that the PlayStation Portable has officially gone on sale there,Akihabara News has a bunch of pics of people so determined to be one of the first to buy the new PSP that they’re camped out in front of a store there.

RIP OFF BRITAIN STRIKES AGAIN! Why are amazon trying to sell the PSP to UK gamers for £179.00!!! with no extras, when you can buy a PSP in japan for alittle over £100 complete with all the extras. Japanese versions contains both japanese and english languages and japan is a region 2 country just like the UK (if region lock is an issue) this is disgraceful!
