Cingulair Wireless has purchased AT&T Wireless. AT&T Wireless is a AT&T company only in name; its now just a part of the biggest wireless provider in the U.S.A.

Actually, if you read the news Cingular hasn't purchased ATT yet because they have yet to have the deal approved by the SEC and FTC. once Cingular gets the OK from those groups, they can then roll out the cash for ATT. also, with ATT's recent shitty Q1 results, some are skeptical.

its like buying a house... you make a bid and if the bid is accepted you gotta go though all the various shit to buy the house.

It seems that the 9 month delay is procedural to get approval from the FCC. Everyone and they mommas has actually accepted the fact that AT&T is now part of Cingular. It's just a matter of time. AT&T will live again as some crappy CDMA reseller of some sort. I've heard from many AT&T customers that their operator logo changes from AT&T to Cingular now and then. |

Today, the large European providers have big stakes in the US GSM market. Obviously T-Mobile bought Voicestream, and Vodafone has a large stake in AT&T.

Vodaphone owns 45 percent of Verizon, and Vodaphone has no ownership of ATTWS. NTT owns about 16 percent of ATTWS though. Cingular is owned exclusively by BellSouth and SBC. And you were correct about T-Mo.

AT&T and Cingular have been using eachother's networks for some time now. I am on T-Mobile and even my operator logo changes when I am in Southern California and other parts of the country where I get no T-Mobile coverage. This is nothing new.

That's right. My T-Mobile logo changes to Cingular when I'm in Cali and Vegas. My Cingular changes to Cingular Extend when I'm on AT&T.
AT&T customers must be very happy that they can roam on Cingular's network and vice versa....without a mutual agreement their respective networks would suck.

@ Richie240: That's understandable when you're roaming of your own network but when you're on your home network, it's a different story. I am on Cingular but when I'm on a dead zone and there's AT&T coverage, I won't pick up their signal (on my home region). I'm pretty sure it's the same thing with AT&T vs. Cingular on their home region. But lately, many AT&T customers have seen their operator logo change from AT&T to Cingular while on their home network, as if they're allowed to roam on Cingular's network. Hope I didn't confuse you guys. |

AT&T (in conjunction with DoCoMo) had plans to rollout UMTS on a few markets nationwide. From what I heard, with Cingular's pending purchase of AT&T wireless, these plans may still proceed (if DoCoMo wants to deal with Cingular pending the purchase). |

Has anyone heard anything new regarding 3G UMTS on the T-Mobile networks?

I had heard that T-Mobile will not be implementing 3G in the U.S. until 2007.

I'm sad to hear that. However, it might be a good strategic move to not rush into it like they've done in other countries. And people might not be ready for it over here. But for my own sake I was hoping it would happen sooner.

@amagab
There is little point in implementing 3G if the majority of customers are not prepared to use them. Data services have been taken as far as they can in Europe using 2.5G technology, so it would seem logical to upgrade to 3G now. Data services are used extensively in Europe, whether it be simple usage such as checking the lottery results on one's handset to more advanced usage, such as using one's handset as a modem. If there isn't sufficient demand for data services then I can't imagine that the networks will want to spend a lot of money implementing it.
