If you're using WinXP try running "msconfig" and check what programs are starting up when you log on.
I there's a suspicious program in the list just uncheck the checkbox.
(But be sure what the program is about).
(I think it's msconfig, can't confirm it, i'm not using WinXP right now).

Or -I think this is easier- download RegCleaner (do not confuse with Microsoft's Regclean), it also allows you to change which programs automaticaly start up, but you can also -surprising, isn't it?- clean up your registry with it :-D For the download site, search with Google :s
