p800 users, look here: Editing Word, Excel & Powerpoint documents on p800! |

I asked SE if they were going to release a spreadsheet for the P800. The nice reply was that the P800 didn't have a spreadsheet but if I had a spreadsheet in mind I should send an email to the developers.
This is what I sent back:
"I do have a particular spreadsheet in mind. The spreadsheet I have in mind is that developed by Symbian (part owned by Sony Ericsson) in the Symbian OS v7.0 used as the basis for UIQ and implemented in the P800.
Symbian has a perfectly good spreadsheet application it just needs porting to UIQ (assuming it hasn't been done already, which I suspect it has). Modifying the interface is going to be a lot easier than writing it from scratch.
So please Sony Ericsson release Sheet for the P800 - some of us are willing to pay extra for it (search the internet for others with similar views)!
There is no guarantee that a 3rd party will develop a good spreadsheet. If I knew that Sony Ericsson was going to release Sheet I would buy the P800."
No reply since.

Posted this to Mike at ce....
Mike,
I heard your company is looking into the viability of making an office document viewer/editor for the Symbian UIQ platform – more specifically the P800. As an avid P800 business user I have to say that myself and the clients I look after with P800s would relish the opportunity of using such a tool. One of our main account managers is looking into other PDA products at present purely because the P800 meets EVERY criteria except him being able to take rate tables, sample contract docs, etc., in office format to view in business meetings.
I’m sure I’m not alone here when I say that porting this kind of app to the P800/UIQ platform would be a major coup for your company – there doesn’t seem to be an competition developing this tool just yet but with P800 userbase growing by the day (I’m on esato forums and the traffic there from P800 users is multiplying rapidly) I can see this being a killer app!
Please do keep me informed as to your progress and whether you do decide to do this. I’m more than happy to put myself forward as a beta tester (I work in IT so am aware of issues of beta testing apps) should you decide to move on this project.
Best regards,
Hope they do it.... I know of a number of users waiting!!! |

well, I have nothing to add, only that since I got my P800, I spent more than half the device price on software.
this demonstrate the simple fact that P800 users are perfect software clients by their nature, otherwise they wont bother buying an open architecture phone in the first place.
addmit it, we are the elite in the mobile phone market, so if you have a good and needed program to write, you'll never find a better customer.

Yes... This app is really NEEDED, and i don't get why they want to make it for the series 6 symbian devices?? What is the point of that... An office editor suite for a device with a small screen, and no touchscreen, what is the point of that ?
They should rahter make it for the p800, since it is supposed to be like a PDA, It has a large screen, touchscreen, and a lot of other features, it is just like a pocket pc... They would get far more costumers if they made it for the p800!

Hi All,
did any of you guys who had earlier sent and e-mail to cesinc.com (Michael) got a reply mail recently asking whether are you still using your P800? Or am I the only one? |

I have been asking for the same thing for a while now.

and I also posted one before this.
How long has the p800 be released and not one company has developed this software yet, Unbelievable...

According to Symbian about 80% of the s/w, typically, developed for the Series 60 should be portable to the UIQ format with few changes. So, Quick Office could be ported without too much effort to the P800. The main effort must have been to develop Quick Office for the Series 60 in the first place. Also, I assume the Symbian market for PDA-like devices at th emoment is relatively small compared with Palm / PPC PDAs. But given the trends, I think Smartphones will take greater chunks of the PDa market. If this happens, Quick Office will have "early mover" advantage. especially in Europe where the P800 and Motorola A920 are very popular (yes I know there are restrictions on the installation of s/w on the A920 - but this will change). |
