It's all to do with the fashion of the times. A few years ago, it was the same situatuin as it is now, as a lot of phones were very similar in style to the T68. If you released a phone that looks like the T68 now, it would be laughed out as looking 'old-fashioned'.
In terms of shape, I think pretty much Nokia are the only ones who have made anything slightly different from the block design;
But even the 5220 XpressMusic still has a kind of blocky feel to it, but is a slight step away from the norm.

It looks like a retro-design remote control for my TV.

Thanks for the thoughts. I reply.
About retro. First of all it's a bit weird to call 6 year old thing as retro. But anyway, there are many things in the world which design was inspired from the past. Like cars, for example new Fiat 500 or some Dodge models.
And if we are talking about phones... Nokia has even put a name: Classic. As here is many SE fans in Esato: I guess you all have read that new T700 reminds T610.
So, I'm sure that a limited edition of refreshed T68 would be a hit. Especially among a bit older people who can value that.
Anyway, I'm glad to read that the design is still imporant for the mobile lovers.

a new T68 would be more then a hit, many people are sick to see all the same designs.
SE has surprized us by launching the W350, the flip is back, but SE is not so they found away to F it up by giving it very poor specs.
SE has got 2 many phone that do the same thing. Its ok to have a few phones that can do the same thing but have a diffirent form factor. but don't flood the market with phones that can do 1 or 2 things more.
instead make some unique phones. niche products can become mass products aswel.
but hey what you gonne do about it, the people who run SE only care about money and them selves, not their custumors or innovation |

reviving an old phone would be a clear sign that SE is in trouble.

I seriously doubt releasing a T68i style phone would be a hit. It would look to old. Design needs to move forwards, not backwards. I really don't believe most people are sick of the way phones look at the moment, I think that might just be your opinion.

Maybe very young people don't value the good old (retro) retro design? But I'm sure there are many other people who like design elements from the past.
And if you are talking about design in generally you can see that there are many products (and commerce areas) in the world which are useing some past fashion elements. |

Well my first phone was t68i and then i was 12 yrs old(6 yrs back), and i used to like the shape and stuff, but i think, if that phone was re released, then o wouldnt buy that.
Right now, SE needs to get rid of tiny screens. Its no longer the smaller the better thing as it existed then...

Yes but not very recent designs. We're talking about a design that the industry has only just moved on from. The Mobile Phone industry is still very new compared to more established areas of commercial production. It can't be compared to Radios designed after old wirlesss units from the 50's, or Stereos designed to look like 80's Ghetto Blasters.
It would be the equivalent of a car manufacturer re-releasing the model it was using only three years ago. What on earth would be the point? It would be a very weird step back.
Thats why kids wouldn't buy them. They would take one look and just think 'That's crap!'. Not because they don't appreciate good design, but because your giving them something that is far too recent to be retro, and too basic looking to be considered appealing against the overwhelming modern competition.
Design has moved on, and ever since the iPod set the benchmark for modern personal electronics asthethics, the industry hasn't looked back since. And why should they?
Modern design are beautifull I think, and can't wait to see what they'll look like in a couple of years time. Appreciate the T68 for what it was, and in a few years time we will look back at todays handsets and love them too. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, but only works when the past stays in the past.

I guess there was a hint of nostalgia when the W350i surfaced as there aren't many flips around right now, not as many as there were at the time the T18s was out for example.
A few peeps would also like to see the blue and green flashing lights appear again like on the T68i - it would reek of nostalgia is they reappeared.
However, with so many new phones appearing each year I guess it would be hard to notice anything that was remotely nostalgic.

As we can see people are different. I would personally buy refreshed T68 even with good oldfashioned grayscale display and with no camera, radio, music player etc. I would not start to use the overestimated iPhone even if I was given it as a present. It's too big, unfriendlily glossy and has a lot of features I don't want. So why to carry a brick in the pocket? However, on the one hand it suits for a bussinesmen and on the other hand for teenagers. I'm neither of them.
Though, the iPhone has one very good feature I really admire. This was introduced already with SE K850i. I mean, the capability to work in many different frequencies (in GSM and UMTS as well).
How many of you used the mobile phone when it worked only in GSM 900? Then came to market the first two band GSM phones which could work on GSM 900 and GSM 1800. Later the Motorola introduced the first world phone Timeport which included also GSM 1900.
Years went by and then SE introduced multiband K850i: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 + UMTS 850 / 1900 / 2100. Two mobile systems total of 7 frquencies! Plus different ways to use data transfer.
It's weird that nowadays many people can't value that. It's really a pity, because such a phone is a real world phone! When SE introduced X1, there was network information total of 9 frequencies: in addition to previously mentioned systems/frequencies also UMTS 900 and 1700. When the phone was ready to go to the market, those systems/frequencies were divided between different regions of the phone. But still the X1 can also operate GSM/UMTS with 7 frequencies like iPhone 3G.
My question to you. Can you also value the phone's ability to be a polyglot?

But what has that got do with the price of fish? A minute ago we were talking about how all Phones looked the same. Frequencies were never mentioned. I thought we were talking about design?
