This is from your above link:

"Nasheeds are moral, religious songs sung in various melodies by some Muslims of today without any musical instruments. However some nasheed groups perform by using some percussion instruments. This type of singing of moral songs without Music is considered as permissible (halal) by almost all stern Muslims."

"Some Muslims believe that only vocal music is permissible (halal) and that instruments are forbidden (haram). Hence there is a strong tradition of a cappella devotional singing.

Other Muslims will accept drums, but no other instruments.

Yet other Muslims believe that any instrument is lawful as long as it is used for the permissible kinds of music. Hence there is a long tradition of instrumental accompaniment to devotional songs. A wide variety of instruments may be used, depending on local musical traditions. "

Permissibility of music

Most Muslim scholars traditionally have held that music is forbidden both by the Qur'an and by the hadith, as well as by tradition and believe that Muhammad (PBUH)stated that musical instruments are sinful when he said: "There will be among my Ummah people who will regard as permissible adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments,"; many of the greatest Islamic scholars of the past, including the four imams, agreed upon this.

However, many modern Muslim interpretations allow music and singing under certain conditions, mainly if they do not encourage committing sinful acts."

As I can see from various sources some areas of Muslim belief have more tollerance towards music than others. We've already mentioned National Anthems etc. too so it's perhaps a little grey area at times...however...the details of Islam aren't the primary matter for discussion here. Clearly some Muslims forbid music and hence that explains the objection to the lines used in the games bgm.

I think it's good that Sony have taken such clear action but unfortunate that it's in such contradiction to their previous stance on similar matters.
I do think that the game could simply have been patched on release day which MediaMolecule, the game's creators, said they immediately had ready but Sony chose to go for the full recall. Seems like a pretty substantial expense when there were other solutions.

Ok thats good and everything, I researched the incident and this was a very intresting fact..

Back in 2007 Sony apologised to the Church of England because a violent video game took place in Manchester Cathedral. Was that part of the game removed? Please. Sony are trying to rectify the problem as soon as possible so that they don't get riots outside there headquaters on the scale of the Danish cartoons. Don't get me wrong, I was appaled and disgusted by the cartoons. It was provocative and offensive. Im not even a muslim and I was appaled, however, pratice what you preach the riots were revolting. People were killed in these riots. It was a complete joke.

When I told a muslim freind about this, he started to laugh as if I was an idiot and thought I was lying!

[QUOTE] I think it's pathetic that Sony has capitulated. A few years ago the company for which I work released a Toy Story game. One of the "levels" featured stereotypical Mexican bandits in the form of pinyattas.

Within days students from the nearby Santa Monica college were protesting and claiming racism. Well that's a matter of opinion, and I can see they might have been annoyed.

Did Activision pull the game?

No.

I'm not a relgious person, I am christian, but I can't say that practice. However when Resistance was released and there was an outcry about Manchester Cathedral being used I wasn't too concerned, but its the double standards that bother me. Sony released a half hearted apology and that was all. Can you imagine the outcry had the scene taken place in a mosque? and would Sony have relased the same half hearted apology?

I'm with one of the posters here, that I just don't think Sony can take the risk of being seen as rasist. But it does stink. Plus this song has been available on Itunes for about 2 years and no-one has battered an eyelid.

As for moderinsation, I'm with MikLSP, I think we need to keep with the times.

I hate to sound like I'm causing a fight here as well, but despite the fact that the Quran hasn't changed in 1400, you'll find that households in different countries, interpret the words of the Quran in very different ways. Like Catholics, Christians and Prodestants there are different kinds of muslims, Sunni, Shia, Sufi, with different beleifes that often leads to grey areas.

I'm not trying to cause any disharmony here, but god the double standards annoy me.

I dunno about that. Despite the fact that this game is somewhat based on network gaming, a lot of people will still buy this who have no internet connection, and therefore would not be able to update with the patch. Some could be Muslim people perhaps.

So can muslims not listen to any music at all then?

I can't imagine a life with out music. Theres probably a song I can link to a lot of experiences in my life. It's got me through good times and bad and of course, those times when your totally bored. You hear a certain song and you can say "ahh, that reminds me of being on holiday" for example

I mean, how do you cope with music on tv and computer games? It's everywhere!

As stated above, a simple answer:

Permissibility of music

Most Muslim scholars traditionally have held that music is forbidden both by the Qur'an and by the hadith (sayings of the Prophet PBUH), as well as by tradition and believe that Muhammad (Peace be upon him) stated that musical instruments are sinful when he said: "There will be among my Ummah (followers) people who will regard as permissible adultery, silk, alcohol and musical instruments,"; many of the greatest Islamic scholars of the past, including the four imams, agreed upon this.

Muslim group disagrees with LittleBigPlanet delay decision

What do other Muslims think about the LittleBigPlanet delay? Not everyone agrees that the decision to postpone the game due to the inclusion of "offensive" Qur'anic text was the right one. In fact, M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D., president of the non-profit American Islamic Forum for Democracy strongly opposes the complaint stating that it was counterproductive to freedom of speech.

Jasser, who has also appeared on CNN and the Washington Times, spoke to Edge-Online saying "Muslims cannot benefit from freedom of expression and religion and then turn around and ask that anytime their sensibilities are offended that the freedom of others be restricted." He also argued: "The fact that the music writer is a devout Muslim should highlight that at the core of this issue is not about offending 'all Muslims,' but only about freedom of expression and the free market."

In the end, it sounds like to us that no one gained a thing from this debacle. Sony and Media Molecule take a bad rap for the delays, Muslims look ever more paranoid and distant, and everyone is left in waiting. Hopefully this series of bad decisions and wrong turns will be over soon.

Just scrolled down further to find this too:
Toumani Diabate defends his Qur'an lyrics on BBC news

Toumani Diabate, the musician behind Tapha Niang (the LittleBigPlanet track that ultimately caused the delay), has defended his track on BBC's News At Ten. "It's quite normal to play music and be inspired by the words of the Prophet Mohammed," said Diabate. "It's my way to attract and inspire people towards Islam." It seems to be a polarizing issue for Muslims, however, as Shaykh Ibrahim Mogra of the Muslim Council of Britain responded, stating that "Muslims believe the Qur'an to be the actual word of god and give it utmost respect."

"Therefore if it were to be used with the accompaniment of music or if it were to be used in a game or a commercial - that would upset and cause offence and hurt to many, many Muslims." So who's right? Probably no-one, it's all very subjective. Still, better to suffer a couple of weeks extra wait than risk offending anyone. The game will be out the "week of October 27th" in the US, with a UK release on the 5th of November (other European territories "no later than the week of the 3rd"). Though we hear that Walmarts are actually selling the game right now, if you fancy giving them a try.
