One thing that is clear is that Nokia were and still are doing more than great with their OS while SE was/is struggling and confused. Let's be honest and fair, SE has been going backwards in terms of UIQ. I for one am not saying Nokia wasn't thinking of its own behind in this announcement but they certainly were in a much better position than SE and Motorola. Even Motorola had started concentrating on Linux more than UIQ which says a lot about UIQ's state. After reading about this some more I'm really looking forward to the new platform.
SE could easily focus on WM only...and be successefull in that

True, nokia saved se, all se had released was a bug ridden P990, followed by outdated P1, in past 2 to 3 years and then the cancelled the much hyped paris for longer than 6months and the beibei which never saw the limelight.
Nokia saved ?

Great news. However, I just see it as a change in reaction to the market. Simbian was started by Psion, Nokia and I believe SE all those years ago with a similar goal, to create a great mobile OS, that's why every review always says a simbian device is a phone first, Windows Mobile is a PDA first. It'll be interesting to see what way Android goes in that respect.
So fantastic news for a fantastic and WELL developed platform. And NONE of the platforms will vanish either, that's a totally stupid thing to say when no one has controlled it since it was launched, Nokia aren't doing it to ditch everything bar S60 (I bet the Nokia fan boy's will say they are) they are doing it to ensure the survival and future of the platform as it's the same base OS on every device. UIQ is just the interface to the Simbian that SE use, it won't disappear the same as S60 won't. If anything UIQ will have more of an impact as everything goes touch screen.
It is also very interesting to see Samsung and LG sign up, but I suppose they want all there fingers in all the pies.
I take it this was the big announcement everyone was on about?
@ems06
So just how many Linux phones have Motorola launched then? Is it more then 1? And how many UIQ phones have they launched? Isn't it 2 so far? Yeah you can surely tell there entire UIQ business model from that. They were supposed to of been developing Linux for it's non smart phones. Different market. And if the news about it's last ditch phone is right, it's using UIQ4 which pretty much makes what you said a load of tosh.
@technical expert
You are stupid. Nokia saves SE, yeap, SE have only EVER made UIQ phones eh? Your post has to be post of the day I think.

I don't like the fact that Nokia will own 100% of Symbian.
Having said that, this is probably needed to be able to fight Android and the iPhone OS since is doing kinda bad with UIQ atm and Nokia is failing hard on their S60 Touch.

Well this has to be good news for Symbian generally, since it's what always had to happen for the OS to really push forward in these changing times (ie, much greater competition from the Iphone, WM and Android on the horizon).
It's the end of UIQ as we know it, and that's a shame, but also inevitable. Historically, UIQ and S60 were both born of differing approaches, one keyboard driven and the other touchscreen, and history has proven that touchscreen most definitely has a future - but while the concept is still strong, UIQ itself has not fared so well, or been managed or promoted effectively, and it's just not viable now. S60 is quite dated and limited in its own way, but its been churned out on many more handsets, so I can take a guess where the focus for any backwards compatibility will be.
I hope what we'll see come from this is not just a rebadged S60, but a new standard which takes the best of both platforms - but if they really want to keep Symbian at the top of the tree, they may well have to go back to basics and design a whole new UI from the ground up.

It's turning out to have been a shrewd move by SE that, ie, going WM. I think with more WM products they may just be successful.
@technical-expert
My agreement with bav stems from the fact that UIQ was/is struggling not that Nokia saved SE as a company.

My views exactly.
This move is to counteract the future threat from the likes of Android more than anything else, so its a good move for all involved - they're only protecting their own interests.

Wow and I just read about those 200 or the 3075 odd UIQ employees that just got fired. Coincidence? I think not.
Like I said last week its time to Embrace Nokia!!!

Do you not understand it bav? All their assets are being put together to create a new platform. So yeah, UIQ will go, but so too will S60. There will be a new platform on which each company will run.

Before you respond to someone you better take time out and research what you're writing about.
