Austria first with 3g iphone? derStandard via engadget

babelfish translation:

T-mobile confirms UMTS iPhone: Austria test market mobile radio operator expects with 3G-Version the break-through - Austria one of the first countries - new tariff model announced in the context of a press conference in Vienna confirmed t-mobile Austria that the UMTS version of the iPhones will be available already soon. More still, Austria own itself as it were than test field for Apples 3G-Auftritt, like for each UMTS telephone. Therefore Austria presumably as one of the first countries world-wide the new UMTS iPhone one get.

Further it was called it on the part of the marketing boss Hendrik Kasteel, "more flexible" offers will give. T-mobile did not want to call sales figures to the current IP hone model, which one drives out since March of the yearly exclusively for the domestic market. But one expects with the 3G-Variante the break-through.

Spreading According to t-mobile about 18,000 Apple-mobile phone in the nets of domestic mobile radio operators circulate since the introduction on the market. How many devices unlocked of it are, one did not want to betray. Straight one in Europe takes time the success of the iPhones still. As reports, the customers before the exclusive contracts straeuben themselves and wait for a 3G-Version of the Internet-mobile phone.

Production is to already start after current medium reports. From the surrounding field of the chip manufacturer Infineon was called it, production still in this quarter would start. according to other rumors would have up to 3 versions of iphone even one with keyboard

Looks like we are on common ground with this one, my source with three colours, urs with three different versions.

I'm not too sure about the keyboard as Apple is known to like "simplicity" and "flexibility" Steve Jobs mentioned earlier that he doesn't believe a keyboard or keypad offers this. But you never know...

a post from an aussie forum, whether its true or not is something else:
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=818157&p=24

"""I would like to put all the rumours to rest- (this is straight from the horses mouth)

Apple resellers have called into Apple next week for a two day lock down.

The iphone will have the following attributes.

1) smaller than current model.

2) 110grams instead of 158 grams. Hard Plastic NOT Aluminium backing

3) 3G with plans and unlocked phones with Optus/Telstra and Vodaphone.

4) Telstra and Optus to release prior to June 30 Financial year end. Vodaphone to release in August 2008.

5) improved camera (maybe 3megapixels), all the normal features of the current iphone plus GPS and video calling.

6) 32 gig model will be largest ( maybe 40gig - not sure yet)

The iphone release will coincide with the opening of the Sydney Apple store and the introduction of movie rentals via itunes for the australian market.

Finally, dont ask me how I know this...

It may appear that the 3G iPhone is near as O2 have officially stopped selling all iPhones. One can only assume it is to make way for the 3G version.

Woohoo, cannot wait for it, my iPhone is not in great shape looking forward to getting this, cannot be doing with 8GB anymore. 32GB would be sweet could fit everything on there then. I wonder what will happen to the o2 tariffs, whether they'll stay the same? I'm not big on 3G but i presume your voice minutes can be used for it, not that i know anybody with it to call.

Hi all,

I know this is talking about the 3G iPhone but i haven't noticed HSDPA being mentioned at all anywhere, have i missed it?

As otherwise unless there really are some of the design changes mentioned i fail to see the big deal of it being 3G. As this only means a roughly 100kbps speed improvement. as opposed to the massive difference HSDPA would bring.

no, I've not seen anyone mentioning HSDPA specifically but then any specs mentioned so far seem to be largely speculative anyway

my assumption when referring to 'iphone 3g' has always been that it would have high speed data as otherwise, in my opinion, they are shooting themselves in the foot

Hi Masseur,

That's very much my feeling to but thought I'd better ask in case i had some how missed something. Really i am expecting it to cover both European and US UMTS/HSDPA as there is no reason that shouldn't be possible now.
