Guys, this seems like a problem with new P1's
My boss recently lost his P1 which had flawless HRW. But after he got a replacement, he discovered that HRW was painfully slow. SEUS didn't help as the unit had the latest firmware installed.
Is this a new bug?

if you use firmware that is not GW(generic world 1 or 2 or 3)
handwrite recognizer is very slow because of native handwrite recognizer support
like Generic arabic CDA

Emprazol, how do I find out if my firmware is a GW (1,2 or 3) - don't even know what that means

Anyway, my system info is as below:

Phone: CXC 162037 R9J005

Bluettoth: CXC 162143 R1D

Organizer: CXC 162156 R6F41

CDA: CDA 162024/95 R7A

Base on the info above, do I need to update my firmware?

I'm not sure of the comparison between an old and new P1 in terms of speed of handwriting recognition, but I just bought my P1 2-3 weeks ago, so I guess you can say that it's fairly new and yes like I said before the handwriting sucks (even after turning of the dictionary and predictive texting)......nothing compared to the P910 I used previously.

On the recognition speed, when you guys go to "Text Input" (under Device), I'm sure you get two options right...i.e 1)Handwriting and 2) On-screen keyboard. Now select "Handwriting", then you get 3 options at the bottom of bar i.e 1) Save, 2) Open 3) More. Now click "More" and you get 1) Setup and 2) Help. Click Setup....that's where you get the "Recognition Speed slider bar". Besides that you also have "Pen-trace color" which you can change from Black to Red, Green, Blue and Yellow, then you have "Pen-trace size" which you can change from Middle to Thin or Thick and finally there is a box which you can tick at the bottom that says "Multi-character recognition"

How far can you go based on the instructions above. If it helps, I bought my P1 from KL, Malaysia from an official SE distributor.

Let's keep this thread going till we sort out the probelm for good.

I'd stick withyour current CDA if I were you, as there seems to be no such speed control with GW1

Of what use is a firmware that offers you speed control, but no speed? Is there a way to roll back to a previous firmware version like say GW3? This problem is far from being solved and is so frustrating.

@alpal
according to wiki your CDA is Singapore and it has own native handwrite recognizer
if you wanna a fast one you must change your current CDA to Generic World with XS++
another advantage of changing CDA is you can update to the latest firmware

I can confirm that the region specific handwriting recognizers are much slower than the default (WG1). When i first got my phone, it was the HK version with the chinese character input. With this firmware there were options for adjusting recognition sensitivity as well as whole word (as opposed to character) recognition. Even with the sensitivity tuned to fastest, it was still unusably slow.

After i used xs++ to change my region to WG1, I lost the chinese character input and the handwriting recognition sped up tremendously. There is no longer the option to adjust recognition speed, but this is entirely unnecessary since the recognition is so much faster to begin with.

As another poster noted, by changing your region to WG1, you also get access to the latest firmware. Additionally, the anti-aliased fonts on the WG1 firmwares look much much better than the fonts in some of the asian firmwares.

I can confirm the handwriting slowness is due to asian language support. I have a m600 bought in Singapore. The handwriting was so slow it was useless (I'm a long time Palm user).

I brought my m600 for servicing at the local SE service centre. I asked them to remove Chinese language support, and the handwriting input is much faster now. It is actually useable.

On top of that, the look of the fonts have improved tremendously with anti-aliasing ("cleartype"). Previously, with Chinese language support, the fonts were not anti-aliased and looked jagged.

This is great news, thanks for the reply Ylam and Chow Ahbeng, at least now the reason for teh slow handwriting is clear.

How do I change to WG1? What do you mean by xs++? Is that a software? I really don't mind losing teh recognition speed if I can get good handwriting recognition performance. Appreciate all your help, please reply

To flash your P1i to WG1, you will need 2 things:

XS++
http://blog.se-nse.net/2007/11/15/xs-31-released/

Sony Ericsson Update Service
http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]ort/products/updateservice/p1i

There is a fairly straightforward guide on how to do the reflashing here:
http://websetgo.blogspot.com/[....]your-sony-ericsson-p1i-to.html

I would suggest that before you do any of this you connect your phone to your PC and do a full backup with SE PC Suite. This will make it easier to retrieve your contacts, and settings after you have reflashed your phone.
