About the Euro I found some info which might be interesting:

There are a number of tests to be fulfilled before a country that is a member of the EU can adopt the Euro. These tests are meant to ensure that the countries that adopt the Euro have sound credentials in economic, fiscal and monetary management. The tests are known as the "convergence criteria" and include requirements for low inflation, public deficit and public debt. They also include tests on currency stability and strict independence of the national Central Bank from political interference.

However, because of the current rules for membership of the Euro, candidate countries cannot join the EU and the Euro at one and the same time. According to current rules they can only join the single currency after at least two years of their membership of the EU.

Bjerkebanen > I have asked about the Schengen agreement and as soon as I get the answer I'll tell you Malta's positon on it.

Here in Malta the country is divided, almost equely, whether or not it should join the EU. Unfortunitly it has become a partisan thing, where the goverment is saying that we should enter and the opposition is saying that we should not enter. A lot of people will vote in the forthcoming referendum only on what its political party is saying and not on facts.

It is interesting to see that this forum is used to discuss politics too. My opinion is that all EU countries should join the EMU, currently Sweden, Denmark and UK is outside the EMU because the general public was quite sceptic about the EU at the time EMU was introduced, but I believe that these three countries will join eventually along with the new members.

Regarding Turkey, I think that it is too early for Turkey to join the EU 2004, it should be somewhere around 2008 or 2010.

Ultimately, I have a dream, of an ideal world, where there does not exist any divisions or alliances, a Global Union. All countries, all peoples, all religions and all cultures come together to build a global community. One's race or beliefs shouldn't matter, and certainly not one's geographical location. Just think about it, how wonderful it will be, one currency, no passports, and all the countries in the union treated equal regardless of their military might or economic strength. By the way, who will need military at all when all the countries are in the same union, right? The combined defense-budgets of all the countries in the world today is more than enough to feed the starving, shelter the homeless and cure the illed ones all over the world. Let's all dream and start working toward that goal!

>>armagab: Capitalism or socialism, which system is not that important, the most important thing is world peace and world unity. That all people deserve a healthy living condition, food and shelter.

kevin81> what you are suggesting is a nice ideology but don't you think you are stretching to far and let's be aware that it is impossible to achieve. World peace is of course an ultimatum and hopefully we'll have it one day. But everyone living healthy with food and shelter - forget it! No way that will be achievable!! Life is a balance of good and bad - for one poor there is one rich, for a success there is a failure, for a population growth there is a disease. There is no way you can change that - it is part of our nature. Communism tried to level it out and it failed.

>>amagab: I realize the problems, that's why I call it a "dream". But I do believe that it can be achieved, maybe in 300-400 years time. Think of the all the research, financing and ingenuity put into the defense industry each year, it is more than enough to solve today's problems. One major concern though is the growth of the population, when societies and human-beings develop into perfection, then the death-rate would decrease dramatically and our already heavily burdened planet would crupple. Although there could be solutions to that too, we can move to Mars or something
