Really? I thought this was related to the Edge service.
Anyway, here depending on your phone model and operator, you either get the "E" symbol on the status line or as part of the area information if the operator broadcasts it - either "E" or "EDGE".

Yes it's relevant to EDGE, but doing what you suggested isn't, and I've never heard of doing such a thing or how it might even help the situation.
There's nothing WRONG with having EDGE there, or a little E, the only way to get 'rid' of it would be to delete your internet settings from the phone, thus rendering WAP and MMS inaccessable.

What I suggested was a way to determine where the letter was originating from. If you didn't like the method just ignore it.

and this still wouldnt work as its only showing whats avaliable not what is connected so there would still be a E there.
