Update:
In answer to my own question...
OpenShiiva seems to work perfectly for converting my avi files to mp4 files that are playable on my w910i. It is free and is a VOB to MP4 converter so I imagine it'll work with most other video files. The only hitch is that it takes a while to encode a file (almost as long as it would take to watch it) but that's not too much of a problem if you are patient, it is a virtue after all. The audio setting is a little bit out of the way but otherwise it is very user friendly.
I should mention again that I am a Mac user and so I am aware that this question has already been answered for PC users.
Kur.

okay, new question:
I have some avi files on a writable dvd. When I try to import them into HandBrake it simply says 'no valid title found' any ideas? My aim is to convert these avi files to mp4 so I can play them on my w910i but I can't get them into HandBrake to even start converting them.
Kur,
try first placing them on the desktop or in a folder on your harddrive
should work, dont know why it comes up with that odd error:s

i dont think vlc is a format never seen anything in vlc i know of it as being a media player - VideoLAN Client
also it can convert videos to different formats too,so if there is a .vlc file type try using vlc to convert to something else then use one of the apps in this thread to convert to mp4 (M3 - Movies & Music for your Mobile is my choice)
quote from their site below_
VLC - the cross-platform media player and streaming server
VLC media player is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, ...) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.

hello,
i have tried various bits of software, but due to having vista i have not been able to try M3. I would just like to say the Total Video Converter 3.11 (free!) is the best and by far the easist to use. its highly customisable - you can even crop your videos (eg the black strips on widescreen movies) to lower the file size.
if anyone knows of software similar to this but better, please let me know jetaudio seems to do too much that i dont need to do. |

yes tvc is pretty good too but the best still is m3

@DarkKrypt, after diggging 7 threads, 3 relevant to this I'd say this is THE most helpful.
I'm going to try Super - because even though I have hacked versions of WinXP (SP1 is official from CD by MS) and Nero 8 (inc Burning ROM) - both working flawlessly - along with .NET v3 installed (tried v2 as well) ... the app M3 will NOT load. It installs without error but will not load.
