I believe font smoothing does have to do with colours.
It's not only the size of pixels, but it uses lighter shades of the font's color on the edges, which makes the font look smoother
I see. My reply was made to this comment when QVGA said "N95 to be far worse than N73 because its .3inch bigger with the same resolution."

Here's my grudge with nokia! Why is it that N95 has "smooth" fonts in active standby and in the menus with the same resolution as N73 whereas N73 doesnt have that kind of font in active standby and menus?
Generally, you'd expect the screen of N95 to be far worse than N73 because its .3inch bigger with the same resolution.
Not really because the N95 has 16 million colours.
Font smoothing has nothing to do with colors.
Who said it was got to do with it? :confused:
You said N95 has 16m colors, it seemed like you're giving a reason for better fonts.
I was talking about the resplutions.

just made a call to hk by using those 0845 numbers on o2. Call quality was very very good. I must say it's a lot better than my N93. No echoing even it was not a direct call to hk. My friend told me my voice was clear.
Reception seems good, no breaking up during voice call either! |

most important thing for me with this phones, the build quality. Some nokia slider mechanism's have been shabby. How is it on this alex?

just got my N95 today at S$1148 (approx 560euro) SIM free. Got the "sand" body color (facial is silver). came with a 1Gb card, leather case, cables and Asian map CD (s.e.a countries) and a piece of screen protector (which btw is slight smaller than screen)
firmware
10.0.0.018
15-03-07
RM-159
Nokia N95 (12.02)
- Screen is bright, big and very crisp.
- Slide feels solid with a firm "lock" when slided in either direction. But there is a slight play (about 1/2 mm) when in the unslide position
-Keypad is firm and clicky (no problem here).
- Nav pad is good (but still fall short of quality of N70). Shiny softkeys are a letdown. It looks filmsy and glaring
- Phone casing is top-notch - no creaks here
First charge usage(Full to battery low warning):-
45min wifi + web surfing
20 photos & 10min video
30 minutes of active BT (transferring contacts & calendar etc from my N70)
20 minutes video out
20 minute GPS
30 minutes of calls (~10 mins is video call)
15 SMSes
Other phone use/play time (LCD on) - approx 3 hours total
-- I am surprised by the longevity of battery life. Hopefully after a few more charge of the battery, battery life would be even better.
Photo/Video
=========
Transfered photos to PC. Confirmed NO red tint. Photos are sharp with very little noise. And color reproduction is excellent. It is much better than those taken by pre-production unit (Will post some photos 2morrow). I zoomed in to pictures 5x and image is still coherent with very little broken pixels
- Flash is VERY powerful. I took a picture in complete darkness and the object came out fully visible, bright and little color distortion. And there is NO purple tint.
- Video is crisp even when play full screen on PC. You have to see it to believe the quality. (Will try to post a snippet later)
RAM
===
Hit a "memory full' when using the Nokia Search. This is due to large search results. But phone did NOT hang/reboot. It just popup a message. The browser just stop loading the pages at this point.
Phone only reboot once throughout. It happened when I first started the Life Blog app. (I think this may be the app reboot the phone after first install rather than instability)
Speed
=====
Every thing is fast (no kidding). Even the calendar after I loaded all my entries (accumulated over the last 4 years).
Camera startup is about 2 seconds. If you disable the image preview, taking a photo (focus+capture+save) takes about 2-4 seconds depending on lighting condition with low light taking longer.
Gallery was totally useless on my N70 but on the N95, it is surprisingly fast. There is no jerk/pause when scrolling thru images.
Transfering files using USB is much faster than what can be achieved on my N70.
On the whole, all my expectations of N95 are met. This is a phone not to be missed. |

nice mini review
Battery life is what's exciting.
Could you take somephotos of the sand version.
I'm thinking of getting sand but don't know if it'll give the illusion it's bigger than plum
