the walkman craze will die down just like the razr. Moto fortune has plummeted and SE will follow the same 6 months down the road if it continue to come out with the same walkman clones. |

I think the walkman brand has more life left.

phones will always have demand as long as people want good mp3 players as their phones. SE is doing much better than the competition in terms of mobile music; look at Nokia. Their approach is not very focused is it?

Putting a good mp3 player in phone is not difficult at all. Others have already caught up with SE in aspect but SE is still lag behind others in areas like video rec and tv-out, wifi, web, screen, connectivity, gps, standard acc (3.5mm jack/mini-usb) and of course a viable smartphone platform.

Sour Grapes!
None of the others have caught up with At this time back in 2005 they were all trumpeting their respective music-phone solutions, Nokia was ready with its attempt, Moto had the ROKR etc and they were all ready for the music-phone battle.
There is a good reason why players came out on top and that is because only was wise enough to come through with good marketing and building up a comprehensive range of players.
For the others its now too little, too late as has captured the youth market and will have it for some time to come.

The topic reads 'Nokia toppled as UK no 1 by Sony Ericsson' and nokia fans find that a bitter pill to swallow. Why? For far too long they have been looking at SE as a small company that poses no threat whatsoever. Well, the tide is turning and turning fast. No wonder some of them come up with excuses and reason to runaway from the real issue here. Give credit where it is due.

The ROKR was a big flop here. It took longer than a snail traveling from San Fransisco to New York, to get your music on it.

We're talking about consumer friendly products here, and Sony Ericsson has managed to understand the consumer perfectly.
They realise that most people aren't ready for smartphones and bloated phones. That's why they've moved to focusing on phones for different people.

SE has triumphed in music phones in 2006. This is because the competition were caught with their pants down. There were no serious music offering. Nokia was busy with their smartphones and moto/samsung with thin phone. In 2007, moto has z6 and samsung will go into music in big way. Nokia s60 phones has come down in size, better performance and price (e.g 6290/n76/n95) which not just music-centric but has a host of other advanced features (like multimedia and video recording).
It is easy to win a battle when there is no/few opponents. So let's just see how SE will fare this year when the competitions fight back.

You jump the gun. There is no bitter pill. SE may have topple Nokia during the last quarter of 06, but whether SE is at the top for whole of 2006 in UK is yet to be seen. Dont forget that in many countries SE are not seen in the chart.
What is obvious is that SE has done very well last year. (there, i am giving credit where it is due. i dont see SE fans giving credit to nokia eventhough their market share is also increasing). But before SE fans go to cloud nine, just remember that once, people used to say samsung was unstoppable. Let's just see whether SE can still have such smooth ride when the competitions pull out their big guns and start aiming at the direction of SE.

Well tell me the opponents to the phones from Nokia like the N73, N80 etc.? As I recall, they are the only mainstream smartphones in the market. No competition, yet that didn't give Nokia much of a win. In fact Nokia placed the N73 against the 'dumb' K800 as its main rival because it thought the market was ready for smartphones.
A win is a win. And SE won because it struck at the right time. Nokia has struck to early with their smartphones.

Even though SE didn't have high tech offerings doesn't mean that it wasn't successful. The way you put it, it's all based around which manufacturer can pull out the best spec sheet.
This is business. It's about making money, and the way to do that is to target the market properly and to understand it. SE understood the market, which is reflected in its success.

Nice to hear such complementary comments, but the reason why we don't really acknowledge the ever increasing market share of Nokia and Moto are because a lot of their market share is based around ultra low end phones.

One retail source said: “Sony Ericsson’s had a stunning year. It’s edged Nokia out. Nokia is selling a lot of volume at the low-end. Nokia is strong for low-end handsets. Sony Ericsson’s releasing monster handsets with great functionality. That’s good for networks, which want users to download content and increase ARPU.”

Like comparing Hyundai (Motorola) with Mercedes (SE).
