guys, just my thoughts.
I live in USA and i go to China, my motherland, alot. I have 3 friends here at USA all got SE T618 3 years ago. Luckily, ppl here in states don't switch phones that often. So they have been using 618 for three years. NONE of them had any problem with joy.
Meanwhile, my other two china friends, one with K750 and one with K700, had tons of problems with joy. That K750 guy had to go to SE CS twice in 3 months for joy cleaning or replacement. And that K700 went there 5 fking times in the year of 2005. Yes, 5 times!
my analysis:
ppl in china mainly use sms instead of voice call (getting better, coz the more monthly plans are coming). Also they play games alot. Here in the states, ppl just use phones to make calls. Simpler life here. Therefore, users in china might use joysticks 50 times a day while users in the states only uses for 10-15 times a day.
My conclusino:
If you extensively use the joy, DO EXPECT it to break.
Dust problem, that will be a very ugly mistake by SE if it still exist. It might also cost the joy to be non-functioning........
Be aware, if you are in a dusty place, say Shanghai China. Dust will simply fall from the air, and totally not avoidable. I need to wipe my TV once every two days to get rid of dust. When i say dust, i meant a serious amount of dust actually accumulates for visual effect. LOL

I don't think SE is really serious about the joy problem
This problem existed ever since T618/610 series.......
They want you to buy a new phone every year, so i guess they simply design that joy for one year regular use, LOL
I kept on farting...... |

The K800 has got a new design of joystick to combat the dust problem.
But i dont know if any of you have read this or no this.
if you buy a new Sony Erricsson phone then you get 2 Years Warranty.
Heres the link to the SE website and heres the statement
http://www.sonyericsson.com/s[....]2_6&zone=ps&lm=ps1_1&pid=10407
Your phone: K800i
Limited Warranty for United Kingdom
Only valid for phones, purchased on or after 1st of September 2005
" The limited Warranty will last for a period of 2 years from the date of purchase of your mobile phone "
Accersories only have 1 year (Battery is covered by 1 year only)
So this mean you can have replacement joysticks for 2 years (Lets hope not tho)
However You must have purchased the phone here in the UK an provide proof of purchase
Good tho

Yeah I remember SE saying about the new K800 improved joystick which doesn't allow dust/dirt into the phone to get on the screen or to mess stuff up. But I was in search for some confirmation that this was true from actual K800 owners?

Buffboy, I agree that the joystick looks exactly the same, and in fact no doubt the plastic top to it is the same. But do you know that the actual component itself is the same?
I'm curious to know as SE did say they were sorting it, but I'm too scared to open up my phone and see what it looks like, in case I start getting dust in it too!! It's still fine for me but as I've onyl had a week I'd hope it was
2 Years warranty is good, I'd like the joystick on my k750i repaired but it's well out of warranty now, so not too keen on using it as a spare phone .. |

Well still it's too hard to tell how good or bad the joystick is. Wait a few more months I think.

You don't need to wait months - I've had mine two weeks and it's already failed. It struggles to go down without pressing hard. The reason given by the service centre? Go on guess...
...'foreign bodies' under the cap. I've got a new phone coming needless to say. |

I wonder why SE still can't make a decent joystick in their flagship models. They can do it, just look at the K600/K608. Perfect since day one.

I received my new one today and this one is different. Whearas the last one was flat on top and had a massive throw to it this cap has got like a bowl shaped dip in it and much less throw. It feel really different to use too. So what's the normal cap on this phone like? |

Hi guys n girls
@peanut,
The joystick should be inverted a tht top like a own as mentioned.
I guess theres no point speculating about dust under the joystick, cause nobody has owned the K800 long enough..... It took just 5months for my K750 to becomne so bad that i had it replaced... 2 months later guess what, it went again, but not so bad... The K750 was a really poor design. Added to that after the repair, they didnt replace the case correctly and dust covered the screen like you won't believe!
Grrr, I'm so happy I have a K800!
Cheers

I really hope they have fixed that bug.. it's the only thing that lets my Sony Ericssons down. I went through 3 K700's and 2 K750i's because of this..it's just such a frustrating fault. I am picking my K800i up this week so fingers crossed
