Even though hard drive technology has come a long way, I still see too many laptop hard drives (especially ones that are used as portable storage devices) failing too often to trust them in a $900 phone. I’m not saying that N91 is using a laptop hard drive; the fact that it uses a “Hard drive” makes me think twice. If a memory stick fails you can buy a new one, but what if the hard drive fails? Who knows..... perhaps buying a new phone might yield better value for money than replacing the hard drive

That is true though, in the unlikely event of a hardrive failure you would have to buy a new phone, better make sure it is insured then!

The only drawback in W900 is its design and looks as compare to N91 otherwise SE is always good in terms of quality.. None of nokia phones so far gives a better sound output as compare to SE and in one of the review i found 750i's camera better than N90 which is really shocking coz it user Carl Zeiss lens and also the display quality of 6630/6680/N70 is not that good.. However i find the display of 7610 is the best and i hope N91 will have the same display...

I actually like the N91's design, i find it quite stylish and unique. I also really like the W900s design lol, complex simplicity!

Is the W900 3G/EDGE or a smart phone with all the goodies ? How much does a 4gig mem stick cost ? Has the W900 lots of 3-th party software ? Will it be bug free or is it going the way the 750i went ? Will have controls which will work all the time every time (big SE weakenes lately ! ! ! ) Greetings from South Africa. Mario. Has anybody seen the N91? Several W900i/c has been sold and is being used already.

So what are the basis of comparison here? How can you compare something that is physically available to something that is still on paper?

I wouldn't belive tests made from other than independent party about that. HDDs are very fragile!

If you drop a HDD when it's OFF, it can brake but often it don't. If you drop it when it's ON it _will_ brake! How come?

The HDDs have moving platters. It also have read/write heads, they read and write to the platters.

When the hard drive is powered down, each head rests on the platter surface (but since the head actually hits the platter, this happens on a section of platter where there is no data.).

When the drive is running, the spinning of the platters causes air pressure that lifts the heads ever-so-slightly off the platter surface. The distance between the head and platter is very small...so small that the HDA must be assembled in a clean room because one dust particle can throw the whole thing off.

So, if you drop the HDD in ON state .. the heads _will_ hit the platter surface on a spot with data and damage the platters and you will either get cluster errors and lost data or a totaly broken HDD. :|

Also most platters are made of either an aluminium/alloy or glass/ceramic composite and are like glass to the touch... so be gentle

That is why you should not buy a phone with HDD.

Well S4k1S, that test is genuine -for I actually know the persons involved-, and so are the results, whether you like it or not.

this talk that the harddisk of N91 is not durable is pure nonsense. this type micro-drive is rated to stand very high shock. i think the phone lcd will crack before the drive does.

I agree there. As why on earth would a fake-test be conducted only for a user to go out and buy the phone then drops it once and is broken. They know we are eventually going to find out anyway and will tell us the truth lol - no point in lying when we will find out anyway!! So i think the N91's harddrive is going to be very durable as the tests have proven.

the phone has no vibrate feature because the vibration would cause damage to the hard disk.
there are no videos from the test no offical published results
what its droped onto what height
its just a rumor from nokia about their own product (they not going to be slagging their own product)
trust me if u drop a micro drive player while playing onto concrete
pavement from chest height you are looking a few drops
impact would porbably shatter screen
some sony drives have shock protection technology like hd5 sony mp3 player
and their new ones this technology is patented by sony
and not in the nokia
this 300+ figure is laughable thats why there are no released facts or proof is a rumor from nokia to make few gulable people think oh
n91 been dropped over 300 times is ok lets buy it

If Sony can come up with a 4GB MSPD at a reasonable price and if they can also make the W900 support it, then Nokia will have a hard time promoting the music factor of N91.

But there are lot of ifs . Lets hope SE can pull it off
