Imho, sony is trying its hand in too many things at the same time! Look at their businesses? From phones to film production to music! I am talking about sony as a whole- This company needs focus. Look at nokia. They know what they are good at and focus on it. What comes to our mind when we hear sony? Tvs? Audio? Walkman? Btw, i read this from a book by al-ries.

for me sony are a company trading on reputation. (iaint talking about mobiles but electronics)
in europe they are over priced and behind in technology for me. only recently have they prodcued tv with more than 2 rgb scart sockets. there plamsa range is only just getting hd ready , were as other manufactors have been producing hd ready systems for 3-4 years.
there designs are still very nice but on a technology side they are behind.
some of there recent results have been very poor as well.
whiz hit the nail on the head they do seem to be jack of all trades master of none at the moment.

SONY rules! But I agree some stuff are more expensive than others.

They are the best with any product they start and make them legendary ie : PS nintendo/sega never saw it coming!! Even their phones now users are growing and I wont be surprised if they overtake nokia or samsung 1 day.

As for their TV and hifi/h.theatres they flippin rule!!! Thats the main reason i got the they make good tv's so their colour screen should be better and they make powerful sound systems so the sound will be good to!!!

I had a SONY mini hifi couple years ago (it was stolen ) but damn that thing was nice!!! the first week I got it and turned it up the roof tiles fell off!!!! 5200W!!!!!!!!! and it made animal sounds lion sheep dogs noises, it so cool!!

To say Sony are crap is laughable. In many electronics markets, their equipment is consistantly high in quality and features. Yes it is often expensive, but no more so than the manufacturers they are competing with.

Their hardware is highly reliable and well made and designed. Rebadged stuff is usually, but not always, well chosen. Given the consistantly high quality hardware they produce in so many diverse markets I think their effort should be applauded.

What ever you think of Sony (proprietary equipment aka MD, screw artists to the wall with drm etc etc) their engineering and manufacturing is world class.

I genrally like Sony. I have a Sony Amp, Sony MD recorder and car deck. Quality of car deck is questionable. And As i mentioned elsewhere P910i had some quality problems shortly after purchase. Fixed under warranty though.

it's presumptious to say that sony products are low in quality and the service is bad. sony is known for it's excellent service, a trait which the company is continuously building on and perfecting. you can always get parts for sony products here in my country, providing the product is not more than 7 years old (as of date of launch). also, there is a low occurence of faulty sets for sony products, and for the faulty ones majority of the fault lies with bad usage and low awareness on part of the buyer. i should know this, i work in an electrical superstore.

i work for sony BTW haha

I don't mind if peeps dis them, but to say their stuff is crap is just not true. You might as well say BMW are crap, when they are renowned world over for high quality automobiles.

Any company making and selling to a mass market will, now and then experience glitches, live in the REAL world, Nokia started out making rubber goods, diving equipment and innertubes for tyres, not phones.
Sony have more experience and a better reputation for quality than most, especially considering that somewhere in the world every minute, thousands of Sony/SE products are being manufactured and sold.
As said earlier in the thread, Sony/SE make and sell higher end products, with high specifications, at afforable prices, and more importantly better backup than Most others, including Nokia, i have recently come back to SE after returning my 3rd FAULTY 6230.
There is always a bigger picture guys,, just try to see over the wall or round the corner. ITS a very big place.

I don't agree, Look at the PSP market when it fully goes live around the world. I also own a Sony Widescreen 23inch SDM-P234 (WUXGA 8ms) monitor that can playback HDV movies.

Also... a couple of months ago, i purchased the worlds smallest HDV video camera HDR-C1. I don't think Sony are behind the 8ball just more cautious if anything...

Posted an example below.

Since then they (Sony) have a released an updated version for the professional market called HVR-A1U.
The Sony HVR-A1U is the fourth offering in the 1080i HDV.
With a street price of around US$2700.00, this isn't the cheapest camcorder on the block, but it's to date the least expensive HDV camcorder available, and best of all, it's coming in at 1080i, which suggests Sony is very future-looking to the time when all television is 1080. The small package will pack well, and it's small size makes it perfect for mounting on the front of a car, motorcycle, or parachute helmet. The low cost makes it perfect as a crash-cam or high-risk camera where a more expensive camera might be too risky to place.
