@Angel: Dunno about the phased activation of SIMs by MTN, but my brother bought an 0806 sim this morning, and was browsing with it by 11am.
Conducted some tests today, and here are the results.
1. Sent MMS from MTN to Glo and received a text containing an MMS viewer address and a retrieval code. Retrieval successful via wap and web.
2. Sent MMS from Glo to MTN and received a text containing an MMS viewer address and a retrieval code. Retrieval successful via web but failed via wap (Error: Unknown application.)
3. Speed tests on MTN GPRS.
Mobile web: 15kbps, 17kbps (6.24pm)
WAP: 1kbps, 2kbps, 1kbps (6.36pm)
MTN GPRS has been very temperamental today, my blue triangle has been coming on and off like my car's direction indicator.

Interesting things do happen. Glo GPRS is still down at my end. Then we had this power surge yesterday that killed the phone I was using my Glo SIM on  Unless some funds come in, I have no budget for the replacement of that phone now.
Plus, the only thing I needed the Glo line for is not working - GPRS. Plus, I never had a choice before; it was Glo or nothing. Now I have a choice.

amby's right about MTN GPRS being temperamental lately. Its so bad I find it difficult to retrieve mails, and when browsing I have to refresh pages 2- 3 times before each page loads fully.
Making a choice between Glo and MTN, it seems, is going to be like having to choose between the devil and the deep blue sea.
Or is it too early to make comparisons?

It's too early too make comparisons...from reading this thread I assume the service has not been officially launched and is still in the beta test phase.

@brix: We can safely take that stand, although official publicity is already on in the news media.
Anyway, this is Nigeria - in 4 years, there has been little difference between similar services offered by GSM networks. I dont expect MTN to begin the paradigm shift. Except, of course, that here in Nigeria, many of us believe in miracles In this case, I'm not expecting one.

I agree with brix25 that it is too early to compare between MTN and Glo's GPRS offering.
As to who offers the better net connection option, time would tell.
From what I have been reading on Mobile Africa, Glo, MTN Nigeria and MTel have all announced ambitious plans to launch 3G next year. Hmmnn... They can hardly keep up with the confusion they have currently, and they want to mudy the waters.
Can any of them handle the high amount of data and voice traffic the 3G would generate?
I'm only asking...

I do believe that MTN and Glo have got their thinking caps on, hence the plans for 3G. Mtel's decision is just political.
In the area of data services, the mobile operators do not presently occupy a position of strength in comparism to the PTO's. 3G in my opinion will put them on the right pedestal to optimizing the hidden potentials of their networks in terms of data services. Nigeria is just begining to embrace e-business, and mobility is a core factor in this regard. |

Quite unexpectedly, tariffs are dropping.
Vmobile has lowered tariffs for subscribers on its Vstep billing plan, as well as for its Bumpercard 1000 users.
The current tariffs are:
Vstep: 70k/s, 55k/s, 48k/s as opposed to 75k/s, 60k/s, 50k/s
Bumper 1000: 50k/s from 60k/s
This is good news for those of us who were contemplating discarding our Vmobile lines in favour of gprs powered ones. |

I agree with brix25 and Alpha's stands that it it is too early to compare only in the sense of trying to determine whose service will be marginally more stable.
However, in the sense that either of them will stand out significantly, I say that having lived in Nigeria, I know for sure that its a waste of energy. The difference will not be significant.
Can anyone tell me if there has been a significant difference between what Starcomms, Multilinks and Reltel offer? Or the significant difference between the QOS and tariffs of Glo, MTN and Vmobile over the years?
I welcome 3G for data on GSM networks, but again I have my reservations. It will be more expensive. And GPRS is already expensive enough. Again, as enumerated earlier, none of the networks is actually managing GPRS well. I shudder at how things will go with 3G.

Has anyone noticed lately that glo gprs is steady now and stays on even at 0.0 naira, but am not sure its free, tho i used it last nite 2 browse sites dat couldnt open wit my mtn, am now afraid 2 recharge my glo, can someone confirm if startd free gprs too.
