Cheers for the info guys
I remember MyMobile mag used to warn that video calling won't work. I don't know whether this is still the case. I heard also that Vodafone may charge for setting video calling up or they may not do it because the phone isn't an NZ Vodafone original... They may not even be able to. I don't know.
Well I guess video calling isn't so important! I just would prefer everything to be working if I wanted to use it.
I bought a K700i from PI a few years back for $400 when it was retailing at Voda stores for $800! You don't often get savings like that anymore!

From the latest announcement, it looks like we are to get the two radio phones, the R300 and R306 here. I suppose they will sell here because they are a little different.
I can imagine teenagers at the back of the bus pulling out an R306 to listen to the radio and annoy other passengers
Would like to see the T280i though.

Those radio phones look interesting but with no A2DP or M2 support they are pretty limited in thier appeal. 65K screens and 0.3Mp camera these days? Z610 from TradeMe or a K610 would be better value for money.

Yeah true, true. They are very low-end though in my opinion and some people will only buy new rather than older ones from trademe, etc.

The new range is due in February according to my local Vodafone store, including W910i. Still want to upgrade my camera to 3.2 MP at least so W910i/V640i/W350i/R300/R306 and W950i/W880i won't do.

Its so disappointing isn't it? Its kind of a coincidence that you should write that as I have just finished contacting SE through their website to try and find out a few things about phones.
I am looking to upgrade as well and have accidentally fallen for the W890i which isn't coming here according to the SE site I really want the W890i and am not keen on getting an imported one due to things maybe not working. I too want 3.2 MP at least, and I don't care about autofocus... (If I want really good photos, I use my Sony T2) And I want something a bit new and different. I've never had a Walkman phone before so am keen to try one. THE W890i IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT! It also has a few other cool features and it definitely looks the part. Its up to date too with A200, etc.
Otherwise, for 3.2 MP (or more) we are limited to buying an old (and joysticky) K800i (no thanks) or the W960i which WILL be very pricey. I just checked a few importers and the W960i is going for over $1000 at all of them. That means it will be even more when it arrives. I don't really want a smartphone anyway, it would be wasted on me lol. Also, I have decided my next phone has to be A200. I know I am narrowing it down but anything else is too little an upgrade for me.
Ah... What do I do?

This is so disappointing and poor, in my opinion:
Look at that. 6 Featured phones and almost all of them old or crappy.
Featured phones should be the top-of-the-line models or something special or something very cheap, not this crap.
We have:
Z310i - Announced December 2006, so not so old. But this phone is crappy. No video, only VGA. It doesn't sell well by the looks of it either. It looks cheap and is by no means a feature phone.
K610i - Announced almost 2 years ago (Feb 2006)! This has almost the exact same hardware as the V630i. Thing is, the V630i was announced AFTER the K610i, yet the K610i REPLACED the V630i here. Whats going on there?!
K800i - Announced almost exactly 2 years ago too! And released 1 and a half years ago. It has been replaced by the K810i which has already seen a decent shelf-life overseas, yet we didn't see it. I actually had to venture into the "old" Sony Ericsson phones list on GSMArena to find its announcement and release dates!
W200i - Announced January 2007 so its not that old either. Its not a bad cheap phone either, but last time I checked it had a crappy screen reminiscent of the T610i's. Not a feature phone either.
W880i - Announced February 2007. Ok, I liked this one when it was new, and it looks great still, but now it is old. The replacement has (or is just about to) come out overseas, but this phone still costs around $600! And its not very feature packed either. It has about the same features as the K610i which is under half its price! I want to see the W890i!
W910i - Announced June 2007. Ok, I would have no problem with this being on the main page IF IT WAS ACTUALLY OUT IN NEW ZEALAND! How can they feature a phone thats not even out? I'd much rather see the W890i than this, as its better featured and should be about the same price in my opinion.
Man, I am so disappointed at the moment.
BTW: Sorry, I'm having a good ol' complain

Well when I asked the Vodafone salesperson today she said that they see lots of Nokia reps but no SE reps that she can remember. The only SE rep she has met was at Big Boys Toys!
What we need is the S500/W580, the T650/K770, the K850i last year the W960 now and the W890 ASAP!. Then fans can finally be proud of the brand here in NZ.

I agree with that. Not too worried about the S500i/W580i, but they would be welcome additions to the range and I think they would sell well.
SE also need a really good phone that they can advertise the sh*t out of. Much like Nokia and N95. This will improve brand awareness here, as I believe theres too many narrow minded Nokia followers.

well i'm quite happy with my K800i, bought it about a month before it was released here (from ebay, sept 06!!), took a few months to be able to get pxt settings sent for it, but other than that its been great (using 4 gig card at the moment)!!joystick is fine, although i'm not a heavy user.i don't think video call works, but my simcard is not a new 3g one, plus i've never actually known anyone with video calling anyway!!was thinking about the k850, but i think i'll wait for the update, or even next model release, as too many things seem to be a bit dodgy with the k850 to risk ebaying on (although it would probably work fine).

@K71: I agree with you on the K850i... It all just seems a bit dodgey. Its been happening a lot lately where the touch sensitive keys fail completely, and in a place like NZ where its so annoying to get a phone fixed, it just doesn't seem worth the risk. Especially for that kind of money (SE K850 is around $650-$750 from various importers).
While I probably won't use video calling much (except occasional calls to my brother and gf if she finally gets 3G), I would like to have all the features of my phone working, just in case I might want to use them some day. Thats wht puts me off importing.
Also @K71, I see you are new to Esato, so welcome If you plan on sticking around, I will add you to the list of active-posting NZers here on Esato.

@M-O
I saw T650i on TradeMe for $450 and I'm REALLY tempted. I'm changing jobs ATM and if everything ends up how I want it to, I may be able to convince the missus it's time for a new phone!
Do ya think its worth the risk? Buying from TradeMe that is, not confronting the missus...

@carkitter: Lucky I was looking around online the other night and I was using PriceSpy to check some phone pricing. It led me to Expert Infotech's website, who appear to be a New Zealand parallel importer/computer store. I was quite surprised by their prices which I think is why I remembered them... When you said $450, I thought "Wait, I know I've seen it cheaper!"
Anyways, its $370 THERE. So you save $80 and it's a lot less risky! To be honest, I'll never buy much from trademe just because I've heard far too many horror stories! I'd only buy from retailers on there like Parallel Imported because I know I can trust them.
While you're at Expert Infotech's online shop, you may want to look around as their prices seem stupidly low!
And I was going to say check out the price of the W960i (at the bottom) , but I just realised its the W910i with the wrong picture Watch out for that, as they've obviously got one of the K770i pictures wrong too (among many other mistakes... They're obviously not experts at SE phone infotech!). Hahaha.
Should Expert Infotech not be to your liking, another place to check is HERE. They have it in black for cheaper ($430), and the other colours aren't much of a price hike from there. It depends on how much you pay for trustworthiness. I recently bought a Z550i for my girlfriend from ETown and their service was very good in my opinion. Plus they reply to emails which is something I find few other companies do!
You're lucky you live in Auckland and so you can probably just go into their stores and buy them straight away, rather than pay for (and then wait for) couriering like I have to
Anyway, I hope you find one of these options better than trademe!

thanks for the welcome, but i've actually been lurking on this site for about 3 years now.i only just registered to comment about the SE W61S that is destined for the jp market.i would buy that phone asap if available for the rest of the world!!looks better than the k850 i think, even if it may be a bit bigger.3 x optical zoom!!sounds like the camera may be alot better as well.
anyway, i would say that as long as i can txt, pxt, make calls, and possibly use e-mail, i'm not too worried if i can't use 3g features at the moment.so most likley i'll continue getting new se's off ebay etc. thats where i got my k800, and k750 before that.both phones have been great (well, the k800 still is).but from what i've seen so far the k850 seems a little risky, although most should be ok i guess.
i've put 4 pictures up in the Photos section too.i'm based in wgtn.most likely i won't post on here that often, mainly just lurk as usual. |

@K71: Didn't it get annoying not being able to see uploaded images on Esato when you weren't a member? It would've annoyed me!
Yeah I guess I don't have too much of a problem with no video calling... Do you still get 3G internet speeds?
