Having found the service menu I noticed the option to turn HDMI on, which I was surprised to see, as it's not listed in the official specs.
Does anyone have such a cable to see if it works? Thanks.

The camera is far from mediocre, the pictures I have taken are rich and sharp and about what you would expect from a 5.0MP camera. No complaints there apart form the need for more camera settings - hopefully these will come with a further update.
Another gripe I have is that the back cover scratches easily and seems to attract a lot of gunk, even though I clean it with anti-bacterial wipes. I don't want a casing as I don't want the phone to be fatter than what it already is.
Otherwise, the OS is blazing fast, the screen could be a bit brighter but it is in no way unusable and the gaming, which is what the phone is all about, is excellent - there is more entertainment packed into this phone than any other and that's a fact. When the screen flips up and the keypad comes out to play a whole new world is before you as far as gaming is concerned.
The graphics are none short of excellent. The difference with Turbo Fly 3D on the Play and the X10 is really noticeable with it looking a lot smoother on the Play.
There is no other phone like it out there - it's very unique and I hope SE support it with more games - it seems they have a lot more planned for this phone.
It hasn't launched in the US yet so there is plenty more content and promotions in store for us no doubt.
What phone is ever perfect eh?? I think if they had made it with a finger print resistant surface but one that was also good for gripping it would be perfect. If they made a smooth surface on the phone especially at the back it would make the phone slippy when playing games They should have made a mat finish

Yeah, that would have been much better. I'm really paranoid about dropping the thing because its so slippery but I've got a wrist strap attached anyway so minimise the prospect.
I've on the SE product blog that the HDMI port is on the motherboard and that it might come with a future update. Here's hoping that comes - along with some more camera settings and other improvements.

Xperia Play shipment to New Zealand stolen , Vodafone launch delayed
As if Sony Ericsson hasn't already had enough headaches with the Xperia Play, here comes Vodafone New Zealand with the announcement that its launch shipment of the gamer-friendly smartphone has been... stolen! We don't know how many Xperia Plays were in those crates, but it must take a pretty sophisticated operation to snatch up all of Voda's supply for an entire country. This slight hitch in transportation follows an unexplained delay in shipments reaching the UK last month, and will compound shortages already caused by limited production capacity in Japan.

They will have a record of the IMEI numbers so look out for such phones on sale there.
Not going particulary well so far for this quarter is it.

Update: It's all fake. Vodafone recently released some "security footage" of the "theft" in action, which only served to immediately incite outrage in viewers of the clip, and a Vodafone New Zealand spokesperson admitted to The Australian that the company made up the whole thing. |

has anyone else experienced there Xperia Play randomly shutting down. I'm currently using a R800a debranded version. Also is there a bug thread or maybe we should start one for the Xperia Play. |

You have to commend them for giving us the latest software. Only the nexus S has this version so far.
