Don't worry about Android 2.0, the X10 UI is very nice but its stupidly slow regardless of the 1Ghz processor so keep working at it . The phone will speed up by release, Android 1.6 is good so chill. Give them some credit for what they have done on top of Android. The protos on 'basic' Android were very quick so it shows how demanding the UI is. No multi-touch is disappointing though.

What are the differences from 1.6 (donut) to 2.0 (Eclair)?
We have the multitask, and bluethooth file transfer, what are other things, anyone know?

• The whole system feels much faster, especially the browser. Apparently it renders about as fast as the 3GS's, though part of that could be down to the hardware

With Snapdragon and looking at the videos this seems to be what the X10 is doing with 1.6 speed wise...

• The browser also gets double-tap-to-zoom (some current ROMs already come with this)

Surely the X10 will have this if as it says in brackets, "some current ROMs already come with this...

• Facebook friends are integrated right into the contacts system

This is something that SE's Timescape seems to deal with (at least to some degree), not having it built into Android isnt neccessary as SE have it built in via their proprietry application...

• Voice control has been scattered through the whole system, and even gets its own dedicated dashboard

This sounds like something 2.0 does that the X10 wont have on release... How useful this is would be my comment though, cant say i'm a massive fan of voice control... Suppose we have to ask what the iPhone users think of the voice control they have with 3.0?

• There's an upgraded version of Google Maps, with layer support

Would be very nice to have this with Snapdragon, should run fast and smooth... So a definately WANT as it were...

• Native MS Exchange support

SE seem to have this sorted themselves, and from the BGR review of the DROID the native implementation doesnt seem all that great at the moment...

• A unified email inbox, for joining multiple accounts

This sounds like a useful feature for some... Personally it isnt as I have a work MS Exchange account and a couple of personal Gmail accounts. Android deals with Gmail in a specific native application so it isnt part of this unified inbox (as far as I am aware from what has been said on BGR)...

• A YouTube homescreen widget, which enables two-click uploads

With SE's 8.1MP camera taking decent videos (we hope), this is a definate WANT I would say (even though I have never uploaded a video to YouTube myself!)...

• A "Car Home" app offers larger shortcuts for functions you might need while driving, as well as easy access to voice control

Sounds like a useful feature, so a definate WANT... But my car has built in SatNav so again I aint bothered at all...

From the list above it doesnt sound like we are missing out on much, but closer inspection at http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.0-highlights.html (see below) does make it sound a lot better and therefore an upgrade is in itself a definate MUST for SE...

Contacts and accounts

* Multiple accounts can be added to a device for email and contact synchronization, including Exchange accounts. (Handset manufacturers can choose whether to include Exchange support in their devices.)
* Developers can create sync adapters that provide synchronization with additional data sources.
* Quick Contact for Android provides instant access to a contact's information and communication modes. For example, a user can tap a contact photo and select to call, SMS, or email the person. Other applications such as Email, Messaging, and Calendar can also reveal the Quick Contact widget when you touch a contact photo or status icon.

Email

* Exchange support.
* Combined inbox to browse email from multiple accounts in one page.

Messaging

* Search functionality for all saved SMS and MMS messages.
* Auto delete the oldest messages in a conversation when a defined limit is reached.

Camera

* Built-in flash support
* Digital zoom
* Scene mode
* White balance
* Color effect
* Macro focus

Android virtual keyboard

* An improved keyboard layout to makes it easier to hit the correct characters and improve typing speed.
* The framework's multi-touch support ensures that key presses aren't missed while typing rapidly with two fingers.
* A smarter dictionary learns from word usage and automatically includes contact names as suggestions.

Browser

* Refreshed UI with actionable browser URL bar enables users to directly tap the address bar for instant searches and navigation.
* Bookmarks with web page thumbnails.
* Support for double-tap zoom.
* Support for HTML5:
o Database API support, for client-side databases using SQL.
o Application cache support, for offline applications.
o Geolocation API support, to provide location information about the device.
o tag support in fullscreen mode.

Calendar

* Agenda view provides infinite scrolling.
* Events indicate the attending status for each invitee.
* Invite new guests to events.

New Platform Technologies
Media Framework

Revamped graphics architecture for improved performance that enables better hardware acceleration.
Bluetooth

* Bluetooth 2.1
* New BT profiles: Object Push Profile (OPP) and Phone Book Access Profile (PBAP)

New Framework APIs

Android 2.0 includes several new developer APIs. For an overview of new APIs, see the Android 2.0 version notes.

For a complete report of all API changes, see the API Differences Report.

What does everyone else think as I am a newbie when it comes to Android, but have been generally impressed by a colleagues HTC Hero...

EDIT: And as Badassman has pointed out, no multi-touch is a dissappointment - see comments relating to the Keyboard and typing in the overview provided by Google - this would be my main worry!

Also, apologies for the long post!

The last one is the best. You can clearly see that white is glossy and black is rubber. I think I'd go for the black one

ps, seal i feel your angst but everyone sees what your seeing, however they are going to wait for more final production units before you judge the screen. i would think that you would be lenient seeing the state of the software as well.

Good Job !! but long way to go Sony Ericsson..
Sleek and Trendy Design. Intro of new OS (Android). Amazing features sepcailly where you click on person's profile and you can acess messages,facebook,photos everything relating to it. Great Job Sony Ericsson.

But I really doubt this will sustain. HTC/Samsung are definately going to answer back with android 2.0 and not only with the android platform but they will also have answer to Sony Ericsson Mediascape too. So that means again Sony Ericsson losses out it's market because of Android 1.6. I'm not complaining about not having Android 2.0 but the matter of fact in today's market, Features and Technology makes the Top Smartphone.

Again I loved X10 and I think it's a beauty itself to have it but it's going to be hard for Sony Ericsson to get Non SE customers buy this phone.

Excellent, thanks Bider...

Few things... First off, I have to comment on Sealover's observations and do that via these photos... Yes, the screen does look a bit dodgy...

On this pic...

http://pics.livejournal.com/dmitry_lazarev/pic/00042wcs

It looks very pixelated and you can see diagonal lines...

With regards to White or Black... Thats very tough... I was all set with white, but seeing that it is glossy makes me think... Glossy would mean its feel in the hand would be very different, even slightly slippery and more prone to mishaps perhaps???... It is so beautiful though, so beautiful, my precious!

I would love the black to be rubber a'la T68 back, that felt fantastic in the hand... Maybe they are simply playing with ideas on these protos?

http://pics.livejournal.com/dmitry_lazarev/pic/0003t3q3
http://pics.livejournal.com/dmitry_lazarev/pic/0003wqwg

Also, going back to my earlier post... What about the screen with respect to finger prints and therefore some sort of coating that the guy spoke about???

Finally, in this pic...

http://pics.livejournal.com/dmitry_lazarev/pic/0003yd2g

Take a look at a number of things... First off the applications, so Voice Search, Sony Ericsson Sync, Gesture Builder, Office Suite, Wisepilot and the others you can see - are all these standard? Obviously we can see the SE ones like the sync, Quadrapop, PlayNow and the proto stuff like Debug Menu and Dev Tools...

What about the top right of the screen just below the service bar... Does that say the following;

CPU - 51%
MEM - 98% (246/251MB)

???

I have to assume the pixelation is due to the res of the video, and not the device, in addition to the picture moving at an angle being captured by a digicam.

on that site we get a glimpse of the cam gui. they could stop being lazy and ask sony for some 4" OLED's ... which they have and so does samsung.

They are maybe testing how much applications they can run in background at the same time with the mediascape or the timescape.

I have been tempted away from the white and thats after thinking that this would be my first white phone... Definately gonna have to reserve judgement on colour until release and in the flesh viewing!!!

Only the white handset seems to be displaying that CPU and MEM info... There are some interesting icons in the service bar on the black handset in the photo of them side by side...

The video playback looks great I'm starting to save money (50€ every week ) I want to play with the white one (I don't like the fingerprint coating on the black battery cover). I have had a black X1 a black w810, my first phone was a black motorola. It's time to change.
