@Dogmann already answered but let me explain further.
The P990i has 3 separate software components:
1- Symbian 9, which is the main OS that is the property of Symbian and licensed to SE (as well as Nokia and other Symbian phone manufacturers).
2- UIQ3, which SE has recently bought as others have pointed out.
3- Some additional components added by SE that actually gives extra functionality to the P990. In fact, the P990 has the features of UIQ3.1 (maybe more) and the bugs we have, except for the memory leak, are probably due to these components.
SE will never make/can't make any of these components open source.
The most they could do is loosen the signed restriction on the P990 back to the state it was with R3.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD |

How come P990 and W950i are getting another firmware and not m600, i thought that M600 and W950 have similar firmware so they would both get a new firmware not just one. There is people with W950i firmware on a M600 on youtube

Speaking of youtube, i'm sure i'm speaking for everyone when I say WE WANT FLASH SUPPORT. I remember reading an SE statement saying we could visit ANY webpage we desire- not yet a reality. We still can't watch mankind's staple food- youtube and there are so many great sites that require flash. SE, we NEED flash support |

sigh* . this is sad. . . i think SE's better off with their non-smartphones... but then again, p910i is stable... |

so i see it's impossible to open source then, though why an analyst have advised them(SE) to open source instead of selling the UIQ licenses to the other brand companies? i have red the news @ unofficial club SE site so i guess this analyst know more than what we know aren't he?

So true.
And support of different codecs. I believe Ares once said that there will be an third part app that will support a lot of codecs so that we can play all kinds of videos without the need of converting it first. Dont know the name of it and what happened at the end |

Guys, can anyone please help in publishing the following bug in P990i to wiki? I don't know how to edit a wiki page
The bug is simply the phone stops responding! But the noticable part is, it does stop responding AFTER midnight with a high probability, meaning it ALWAYS hangs anytime after midnight, simply freezes when I make a phonecall! Moreover, the option to turn off flightmode menu at startup greatly reduced the number of times the phone restarts 'to improve performance', and the number of times the phone hangs/stop responding per day!
So the basic is : the phone freezes w/flight mode almost too many times per day, and when turned off, it usually freezes MORE OFTENLY after midnight hours...
Funny bug, but I've been testing my phone all along ABSOLUTELY FREE OF ANY APPLICATIONS, so its not 3rd party software thats causing this.
Can anyone plz post this description in wiki? I don't know how to edit this page, it gave me a big pain in the a*s

I am glad to read SE has amended their mistake and decided to continue supporting their flagship phone users. Thank you SE!
Now I just hope their internal testing and quality assurance processes work better than with the R6 release and all bugs are found before they reach their users.
I was about to move to a Nokia E61i, but it seems my P990i still has plenty of life left.
PD: I am sorry to hear M600i users are left out. No good. |

I more thing i would like to be implemented in the new FW is to have the Keypad lights switched off while watching a movie. After playback of 10secs or so the keypad light should be off.
I like to watch movies on my m600 after ripping them off DVDs and converting them to 3gp format in 30fps and the keypad light is on the whole time which decreases the viewing pleasure as well as the battery life.
So do so in the next FW

Ugh! Seems like some people wanting too much from something I hope will simply be bug fixing and no new features, thank you very much for not adding more bugs!

No.
its something like having the P990 be 'what it should be'.
The P990 is a high end phone with apparently 'too many things' preventing it to hold this name tag proudly.
thats why we hope for those added 'missing' features to be placed in this device, NOT even the P1.

More RAM. Then why don't throw more "realistic" options to the wish list:
- GPS
- 5MP camera
- Bigger QWERTY keyboard
