This is because the thumbnail files are being generated for newly added image. Fyi, the "real" image file is never displayed by gallery (unless you zoom in). It makes smaller images (of various sizes) of the real image file and store them in subfolders. Gallery display these files instead. So the next time the gallery seems slow the reason is not due to displaying large image (but due to background process creating these thumbnails)
thanks, I am familar with thumbnails and my immediate assumption was that this is the case. however it seems that on the N95 at least these thumbnails are not stored as once the gallery is closed, or the phone restarted, it takes the same amount of time to get images displayed first time as it did the first time, last time, if you know what I mean. its only while the gallery is still open that subsequent returns to the app cause the images to be shown quickly
As time goes by, these thumbnail folders get cluttered. I have not investigate for N95, but for previous version, these thumbnails are not deleted even you after you deleted the actual image.
from my text above, it would appear this is not how is works on N95 as it seemeingly takes quite some time to generate the thumbnails after a phone restart or if I purposely exit the gallery application

now thats crap, if u have to wait every time to see your pix... especially if u have a lot of... as i know nokia, it will be managed with the next fw version, should be, cos many go for that fone cos of the cam, so the gallery is an important apart.

so, again, everone waits for the "next firmware". honestly... do we not have anything better to do?
to be honest, I am only commenting on what I see but make no comment that it affects my life in any way. I'm happy to wait an extra second or two for the gallery to appear, I could spend 100x that on here complaining about it but its just not worth it.
obviously if a subsequent firmware changes this I'll be happy, but I really must say I'm not that bothered

its not about the fw, iam also not a new-fw-freak, my observation was focued more on the cam-gallery connection in those eyes, who take it maybe as a main cam instead of a digi cam

I doubt very much that many buy a mobile phone with a built in camera and expect it to be the equal of a stand alone camera. they migt see the 5MP specs etc and think "yeah, that will take good pics" but they surely would't expect it to perform like a dedicated device.
I think most people these days know that convergence comes with some limitations. certainly none of my non-techo friends who always ask me for advice expect the same from a phone than they do from a camera/mp3 player etc, though I do tell them it can come quite close and will only get better, and thats something I believe strongly

I am pretty sure these thumbnails are stored. I use FExplorer to go to these hidden folders and there are full of thumbnails.
It is not true everytime thumbnails are generated. Only when you have added new photos. If it cannot find the same image name in the thumbnail folders then it generate.
The gallery is fast unless you have some files in the image folders which thumbnails are not generated. In the thumbnail viewer carousel , 2 thumbnails are used for one image. The smaller at peripheral and larger one at the centre.
Bear in mind NOT all the various sizes of thumbnails are generated at the same time. If the photo in the carousel never move to centre the bigger thumbnail is not generated. The biggest one is only generate when you click on the image to view it in the slide viewer. The "slowness" you mentioned is because of this reason

@ Masseur... I know you are fond of you M600i... and I know the N95 is a different beastie in terms of capability...
But how do you find the N95 User interface compared with the M600i...
I am hoping to take collection of the N95 in a couple of days... If Postman Pat remembers where I live!

@mib1800, I've just turned my phone off an on again and when I start gallery I again see file icons and it populates each one slowly with the thumbnail. these are images I ahve had since saturday and have viewed a number of times in gallery, nicluding several times this mornign while answering boba's questions
if I go to another app and then return to gallery it displays quickly but if I specifically close the gallery application and restart I again seen the slowness of displaying the thumbnails.
I really can't say more than that and obviously am not considering what is going on behind-the-scenes, but this is what I am seeing on screen. Its the same every time I start gallery after closing the program or restarting the phone
@smiler the cheshirecat, no comparison really, but in general its fairly logical to find things you need although I have had one or two exceptions to that such as locating connection preference in the web browser. doesn't take long to get used to it IMHO

Well, it takes time to load 15 thumbnails in the carousel. Bear in mine, the gallery uses several process threads. It is loading thumbnails in the background even while you scroll. So the longer you have gallery opened, the loading would have finished.
btw: if you view in slide viewer, bear in mind the thumbnails are actually QVGA size and adding on the slide effect (i.e 2 is displayed), processing is pretty intensive. |

Orange are really on the ball. I got the N95 on Thursday morning at abvout 11:00 as my first ever dealing with Orange, put my request in for the unlock code at about 16:00 on Thursday and just a few minutes ago I received it in an email complete with full instructions on how to do it. can't complain about that!
So now my N95 is unlocked... just waiting until the next firmware is released so I can debrand
I am enjoying getting into it still but I just never seem to have enough time these days

the standard £20
I've only had it quicker once before and that was when vodafone gave me the unlock code for p990 (I think) at the point of sale. I ended up taking the phone back so they weren't too happy about that!
