Well, while you guys are having fun with the MTN GPRS, mine is yet to work. The Glo's GPRS is working well on my Siemens S55, but not with MTN.

AYA, what did you do to make yours work, did you call the MTN customer care and activate your line for GPRS?

@chimex:

1. I run GoSmartMobile.com, so I simply checked the site statistics after your post here and saw that an myX-5m and m21i came visiting around that time. Angelgirl was the myX-5m

2. No; the m21i not a popular phone in Nigeria. But its in the stores.

3. I know about i-Mode and its an impressive bit of Japanese (I believe initiative) that's catching on in a few European countries.

I had an i-mode phone (NEC n21i) once, but of course the i part did me no good since no network in Nigeria supports it.

@diakim: No; I didn't. I just put in the settings. My dad's MTN line isn't browsing either.

No-one seems to know why. Maybe its his old 6310i.

BTW, when I put my MTN SIM in my wife's S55, it does not browse. I wonder...

Maybe the MTN's GPRS is not compatible with S55 then. I may have to accelerate the purchase of a new phone, otherwise I might miss this freebie while it lasts.

I doubt it. To be sure, I put my Glo SIM in the S55 and it did not browse either (though it used to, and like you said your S55 does browse with Glo GPRS too).

Its likely to be a setting thing or a temporary network issue.

Anyone who wants to enjoy this awoof better do so quick! Its official: my sources tell me MTN is launching its GPRS services pretty soon. A few days time more or less if all goes well (I don't know if they will start billing immediately or not). More on this is available on my Diary at http://gosmartmobile.com

He/she that has ears, let him hear.

Has anyone checked to see if MTN's base stations are EDGE-enabled?

I think the siemens S55 cannot be manually configured to work with any network's internet service either wap or csd.
Only OTA settings are compatible with the phone, and once you tamper with the settings, even when you re-enter the same values it will not work. I encountered these problems when I was using my s55 with Vmobile's csd service. I had to send texts to 170 to regain my connection.
MTN don try jo, for the past week, my 706naira credit on my glo line has been intact, meanwhile I have clockled 92mb and 38hrs on this mtn line. In naira terms, thats a whooping N61,210.00:-)

for those of you using the s55, just slot in your mtn sim & send settings to 4777 & ur browsing 1time...
it's not difficult to setup cos i've used it b4 & i'm currently using sl55 which has the same menu as the s55 & i have both glo & mtn settings including mms & wap which are both working & browsing...

@ambyzown: Not entirely true there. I manually configured my wife's S55 for Glowap, Glomms, Glodirect, Vmobile CSD, and MTN CSD,and they have all functioned flawlessly till date.
