Actually, am waiting for a network unlock code to come through so I have been offline (just playing via Wifi) so far, so that might well be the issue. Thanks.

Yes. Once you plug in SIM and connect to network this thing wil disappear.

I put my hands today on a blue Arc.. I was all excited for this phone, but today was a bit disappointed..
I was considering getting an Android to keep it as a second device to the N8, and thought the Arc should be it..
First of all, true the design is ahead of the competition within the Android world, but usually SE are capable of even more attractive designs.. I liked the X10 exterior more..
One thing stunned me is that Android still don't support Home Screen and UI view in landscape mode!! How could that be? And I thought they already were over this since Froyo!!
Haven't used an Android for a while now, but really, have I missed something or landscape mode is still not supported?!
The Display of the Arc is very good.. But I don't get it what the area above the screeen all about! It seems like as if it's a wasted area!!
The headet jack at the side is plain stupid! Lack of front-facing camera is another.. As well as positioning of the tiny camera module and the respective tiny shutter button!!
Anyway, the real let-down though is the camera! Of course I couldn't test it in a shop.. But really, it's barely an upgrade over the X10 in quality.. Already went through many samples online..
As to the night photography and the Exmor R sensor, it's just some publicity stunt..
I know the whole crowd of SE fans over here would claim otherwise, maybe even claim it's the best camera in the market, but truth said, it's barely the best Android camera out there..
It's no where near the peformance of SE's cybershots series (Satio included)..
And it's really pathetic for a company to take a step down in this area! Just to follow the flow of ultra-slim designs!
However, as SE reintroduced the Walkman series to the market under the Android umbrella, why wouldn't they do it with the Cybershots series with Xenon flashes as well..
Maybe then, I'd pick an SE android..
The positives are SE's custom UI is way better and smoother now.. Gingerbread out of the box and readiness to give the latest updates in faster rates is a plus.. Though unlocking the bootloader should be considered the big plus really!
Problem is there is nothing special at all about the Arc other than the unique deisgn.. Which IMO is inferior to that of the simpler X10's!! Other than that, the Arc lags in everything else against the major competition!
SE will be dropping the price of this flahship soon I guess!
I'd even pick a Nexus S over it really! |

^ I'm not sure home screen in horizontal mode would be that useful and I've never had the need for it. Everything else works so I suppose it seems a bit bizarre not to include the home screen.
The area above the screen isn't really an issue. The black Arc I have you don't even notice it and the screen does look proportioned (actually it's one thing I really like about the Arc is the way the screen and the surround amalgamate whereas the X10 you could see the border around it).
Headphone jack yes is silly, as for front facing camera - do people really need them, old phones had front facing cameras and the "facetime" type technology never really took off.
I'd disagree with you on the camera big time. Yes, compared to the X10 it is not a massive leap but the sensor gives noticeably sharper images corner to corner (whereas on the X10 you would get obviously blur towards the edges), the colours have also been tweaked to make them more natural (albeit I would say maybe a little over saturated but not a big deal), the X10's colours were good but tended to look a little washed out under certain situation. Focusing and capture are also much quicker than the X10. In terms of against the competition I'd say still one of the best smartphone cameras, much better than iphone 4 and Nexus S. Compared to some of the older Cybershots, yes and no, compared to my old K850i, yes, but my benchmark was always the C905 and the Arc is still slightly under that - not my much thou. Camera placement, yes, isn't ideal but no issues for me, I thought I may get a few stray finger shots but not yet, and the camera button is not really an issue, it's still very useable even if a fraction smaller than the X10.
My understanding with Xenon is that, a) the modules are too large to fit in most smartphones (unless you create a massive bulk at the back, and b) they have a potential to seriously drain the battery. Most people don't need Xenon therefore LED will do.
I terms of design I do prefer the Arc over the X10. The X10's design was nice but does look a little dated now. The thing that impresses me with Arc is it feels featherlight and sits nicely in the hand (much better than I thought it would).
The thinks that draw me back to SE are the little attentions to detail; the dedicated camera shutter, the LED notification light (soooo handy).

I went through comparative test on GSM Arena
Samsung SG2 - LG Optimus 2x - SE Arc.
It's clear all the cameras use slightly different algorithms.
In the result all the cameras have their better and worse spots.
LG tends to be very sharp but also adds alot of artifacts.
SE is "polishing" some parts which are less sharp but than on some  is the best.
There are also fragments where Samsung leads.
No clear winner at all. Different approaches for all of them.

C'mon, show me a photo where arc is better than sgs2? Mabe 1 one will be, no more. I'll keep insisting that arc's cam is average at best. |
