SE's upgrade service seems to be down at the moment. Any ideas as to why, or how long it'll be down? |

Here's the situation. The Sony Ericsson Online Update Service randomly corrupts the firmware on the K700i when it performs the update. Sony Ericsson has had a lot of phones sent in due to this problem. The same problem occurs at some local service points.
There is no telling exactly what files get corrupted or even when/why. It happens randomly. Some have experienced missing frames in the camera mode afterwards, some have corrupted pictures/screensavers, and some lose their startup picture while others get corrupted sound or theme files. Not all phones have this problem when performing the update, but Sony Ericsson now have found a pattern and decided to stop the Online Update Service until they have sorted out the problem.
The problem for Sony Ericsson was that people who updated their phone didn't notice that it got corrupted at once since the phone functioned properly afterwards. When people have used their phone for a while, they noticed that some of its user interface was corrupted.
Doing a new update won't solve peoples problem since the procedure doesn't replace files that are up-to-date (even corrupted files can be up-to-date). Doing a rescue update won't help either, since the procedure is similar to the update procedure. The corrupted phones must be sent in to Sony Ericsson who eventually re-installs the whole system firmware. Some - but not all - local service points are also capable of doing that, and that's why some people here have managed to "downgrade" to older firmware or have their phone "re-flashed" with the current software version (re-installed firmware).
By checking your log file called "mySEUSlog" in the "log" folder, you should be able to see if your phone got corrupted somehow when performing the update. If any of the lines say "Warning Signature invalid! File will be deleted" or "Error", then you most likely have corrupted and/or missing files on your K700i. You just might not have noticed it since it could be a file you haven't been trying to use yet.
The update service wont be back online until this problem is solved. |

Well that answers a Q I had as well!
I only just purchased a DSS-25 the other day too!
I hope they get it back online soon! |

...Aint that just the way... I'm in the same boat.
Got a K700i recently, and I'm very impressed with it, in fact I'd go so far as to say that it's closer to "my ideal handset" than any other I've had!
..But I'd quite like to see the times of missed-calls, I'd quite like to only have to say "hello" once per received call, and a little tiny bit more battery-life (or more accurate indication of remaining charge) would be cool.
So, within about two hours of finding out (and seeing it in my very own browser) that SE operated an online-update service for certain phones, including mine, I found a website and bought a DSS-25 - it arrived within 48 hours and the update site has been down ever since. Gutted!!!
I hope they sort it out soon, and just out of interest, I wonder how many P900s have been fried by online-update? Couldn't they just use that as a model to resolve the K700 update problems?
Yours hitting Refresh (over and over again),

@Cybervisitor
Are u somebody from SE as u seem to know everything what is happening. u have mentioned almost everything in detail. i had taken my k700i to be upgraded to R2AA003 and my mp3 files got corrupted and could not be deleted. Lucky the SE service centre in Qatar is good and nothing like mentioned in the forums here. they agreed to replace my phone and in the meantime gave me another replacement phone till a new piece arrived in the first week of november..
and i noticed that the replacement phones have a red cross mark on the phone label (near the sim card). does it mean something or just to identify that it is a replacement phone.
and is there any difference between the replacement phones that come in the small packets (minus battery and back cover) and the pieces that we buy off the shelf. |

no. the corrupted firmware will not become alright even if u manage to downgrade / upgrade to another version.
get it exchanged for a new piece at your SE service centre and join the group of ppl who have exchanged it till now. |

Just checked my update service log file and when I updated to R2L i got 2 corruptions but right underneath it shows that the files were sent again and sent successfully this time so I am guessing that if you do get a corruption the update service should recognise this and re-send the files that didn't work.
Maybe on the people's phones who did have corrupt firmware, the update service simply refused to send them again and moved on. |
