I dont understand the level of flak Sony gets for bringing out cheap reasonable products. I doubt 95% of the the actual consumers can afford the prices that are being strewn around right now. Sony comes up with a no nonsense cheap device and you start complaining. A building starts from its base. If you havent seen properly, Sony are now ruling the lower to the higher mid range market. I am sure next year Sony will come up with something huge. A player like Sony cant be kept in the oven for much. And the GX/SX probably are suffering from the production problems of the Snap S4. Even in india the HTC ONE S is using an overclocked S3 and selling at a higher price than the XS.

Guys, think about it. We aren't even past the middle of 2012 and Sony already announced and is selling so much phones. The problem is that allmost all of you guys want to see high-end phones. But that's a small segment of the target group of Sony. They released three kinda high-end phones during the year already. And if I may believe u13x over at XDA there are coming at least two more. Just be patient. Next big event is IFA Berlin. Before that we have Google I/O, and there is the rumored date of 12 of July.

soya cincao reports ICS is pretty fluid on the Tipo and Miro for 800mhz phones. Good news there !

Anyway on to some more positive news from Sony Electronics this time and not Sony Mobile. Sony Electronics will launch Windows 8 based tablet very soon. So for those of you who love Sony and want to get a Win8 tablet, watch out.

And this isn't no rumor but comes directly from Sony India Managing Director Masaru Tamagawa

Well if there is any truth in what you say (is there????!!!?), sony will try & recover from their "fringe event" by giving us a live stream of the hayabusa announcement on July 12th. (a month later)

I knew it would be difficult for me to maintain my love for Sony after Ericsson was bailed out, but now it proves impossible.

I dont understand that a company, that has been renowned before for crappy announcements and not delivering even them, continues to crappily, eh happily announce stuff that´s old and outdated even before it was announced!

Who´s the bosses? Who thinks of this?

Anyways the only thing for me that keeps them in the game is that other manufacturers are still unable to create devices with a decent design.

I so much like to get away from the iPhone 4s but where to?

Sony? pfffff

It's important to remember that all the phones we're seeing are still remnants of the Sony Ericsson joint venture. They were designed while they were SE, and they're simply seeing those plans through. From what I understand of the matter, it typically takes 1-2 years to get a phone from nothingness to market, and SMC hasn't been around that long. More than likely we won't see completely originally designed Sony phones until 2013. With the potential hope that they'll be incorporating tech from their various divisions (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE I want a high end Cybershot phone!), we should definately not discount Sony as a viable option.

Many of us here (myself included, admittedly) are high-end phone whores and mostly look to that to see where a company stands amongst the others. As many others have so wisely pointed out though, that's just a tiny segment of the market as a whole and Sony's been releasing some mighty kickass devices so far this year to try and cover as many market segments as possible. True they don't yet have an ultra uber super duper almighty high end device on the market yet, but there's still plenty of time in the year for that to happen.

Sony Win8 tablet is a big thing for me, looking forward to seeing what they are going to do with it. (the VAIO Slider concept is what I want from a Win8 tablet, equip it with an Intel Atom and sell it cheaply and I'll buy one the second they come out, perfect for a student)

What's there to recover from? It's not Sonys fault that people got their hopes up for no reason.

high-end whores?
Like that expression. But I'm not only. I always liked Sony/// for bringing out devices like the active, mini pro etc... non high end products that had a lot of charms and were just sort of magic to have them. Now with the umpteenth reiteration of the P,S,U,G,R,E,F,W;D, whatever they even lost that.
But then again looking at the mock ups of the new IPhone, this too will be the same of what we´ve known for many years.
So Im having the feeling that the smartphone market in general has lost its magic of its early years...
Maybe I need to find a new hobby....or take care of my wife?
Nah, new hobby....

iPhones are targeted towards the uber high end segment. In india, the Iphone 4s costs anything between 800 to 1000$s . The Galaxy S3 falls a bit short with 700$ competing with the One X. The XS on the other hand sells for around 550$s. When people talk about phones and the specs, they seem to completely forget the most important thing that drives the competition. The price.

Well yeah, there hasn't been too much new and exciting stuff the past year or so IMO. I imagine some of the next big things will be flexible, shatterproof screens and hopefully some advancements in battery life - I'd heard that Sony was working on some things in that area.

As it stands, we have smartphones eating into the market segments of point and shoot cameras, mp3 players and portable gaming machines. The thing is though, as good as smartphones are right now, they're in a jack of all trades and master of none sort of situation. They're eating into the markets for those devices, but anything those smartphones can do, those dedicated devices can still do better to some degree (maybe not as much for mp3 players). The good thing for us Sony fans is that Sony is probably the company out there with the best chance of making a super device. They have their cybershot division and ultra slim POS cameras, and their tech could be incorporated into a phone. We even have those rumours about the lens assembly from their T series cameras appearing in upcoming phones (who knows if they're true or not though). We have their Walkman line whose tech is already being incorporated into their smart phones for great listening experiences. We have their Playstation line which can provide a gaming experience far in excess of what current smartphone gaming can do - especially if they add on physical controls. They even have their own OS and app ecosystem in development with the Vita OS and Playstation Mobile which could open up some interesting possibilties in the future!

My ultimate dream phone from Sony would be a Vitaphone with a 4.6 - 5" OLED display, a slider design like the Xperia Play but with some physical nubs maybe like the PSP instead of those touchpad things on the Play. A Cybershot T-seires camera sensor + lens assembly and xenon flash, and a kickass loudspeaker possibly based on the magnetic fluid tech they've just begun to use for great sound. I have no problem jumping from Android to Vita OS so long as they iron out the kinks and I've already begun to invest money into Vita games which so far are absolutely amazing.

Anyways, I'm going off topic here... back to new phone jibber jabber!

Sony Win8 tablet would be amazing...will definitely get this once out...

Vita phone would be just as amazing, have a vita myself...but i'm not sure how it would work...i love playstation but just couldn't bring myself to get the xperia play, not because of anything against android or the form factor (i think the form factor is great for xperia play) but because playstation mobile (previously suite) just doesn't cut it right now as a games platform. I got a vita because the games are great...but i can't see myself holding the thing up to my face for a phone call...right now, its perfect for skype. i kinda hope sony doesn't release an xperia play 2 cos it would be quite a useless device. dont want them to waste time and money.

back to phones, what exactly will mint bring thats so much better than the hayabusa?

Well, a Vitaphone along the lines of the Xperia Play would work just hunky dory. Sure it'll be thicker than your average high end phone, but that's alright if the gamepad is anywhere close to what the Vita can do. I doubt they could fit actual joysticks onto a slider phone and make it work, but even nubs like the PSP would be great.

As for PSM, all we've seen from it so far are a bit of Sonys own efforts. With it now being open to the public, I should hope that it'll take off as a viable option for apps and games. If it becomes big enough, we could see Sony try to launch their own OS onto phones and tablets to compete with iOS, Android, Windows and everyone else. They can even still keep their toes dipped into Android with PSM so they'll get the best of both worlds in a way.

From what we can tell of leaked info, it'll have a larger screen, LTE capabilities, a different appearance that I suppose some will like and some will hate, going by other peoples impressions. I don't suppose we have any other info at this point.

Come on! This argument that these phones are SE phones is a fallacy.

Sony took charge of SE for the last couple of years and they are the ones who were making this phones, Ericsson had become a passenger. You Sony fans ignore the statement made by Bert that SE had become Sony in the last couple of years. So, these phones are Sony creations.

No wonder Ericsson decided to sell their half of the joint-venture, their input was probably non-existent. If you want Sony to be competitive then stop making excuses for them and hammer them when they screw up.

Sony Corporation is failing because of poor management, decision-making and living in the past without considering the competition and the consumers.

The same mess that Sony created within SE is still within Sony mobile.

Don't you guys see the same thing happening over and over again? Sony is flooding the market with the same phones as when they did with SE, think the many variants of the walkman and cybershot phones that were the same thing except for the model numbers. Now we have Tapiocas, Us, etc, which doesn't make sense to me.

No one is trying to make excuses for Sony. They may have been primarily in charge the last couple of years, but we also know Sony was reluctant to share a lot of its technologies in a joint venture. Heck, even internally the different divisions of Sony never really spoke with one another or shared tech. Case in point, when tablets were becoming popular there were 3 to 4 divisions of Sony each working on their own tablets and didn't even know the other projects existed. It wasn't until Kaz discovered this that a stop was put to all that and they began working towards a single product. Now that Kaz is in charge, he has commited to breaking down the silos in Sony and having the different divisions openly work together. A recent interview with Yoshida from SCE indicates that this is actually working out for his division, and we can only hope the same is happening with SMC.

The Sony you're referring to is gone now, but the products we are getting are their legacy. We have yet to see what the One Sony initiative will be able to produce.

I am glad you agree with what I wrote about Sony being practically in charge of SE and that these phones we see today are Sony creations. That was my whole point.

Sony was reluctant to 'share' ther technology with SE because they underestimated the market and the competition, it was never about the joint-venture.

I never wrote that Sony is incapable of changing but that they shouldn't be treated with kid gloves.

If you go back a few pages, you will see where I wrote that I am looking forward to seeing and buying a Sony quad-core phone next year, that means I still believe they can turn this around if they put in a lot of effort.

I will still be here next year (God-willing) and if Sony screws up I will criticise them and never buy their product unlike some who hold on even if Sony gives them rubbish products.

The last phone I bought with a Sony name on it was/is the wonderful P1i and I haven't supported them financially since then because they sucked.

Right now they have nothing interesting for me and so I won't buy any of their products. If, however, their quad-core phone for next year is not competitive enough (for me) then I will buy something else.
