@WhyBe

I think you have misunderstood SE's intention of the X1 being used to break into the US market with being targeted mainly for it. There is quite some difference between the two.

SE really doesn't have the market presence in the US it has in the rest of the World and no where near the historic sales penetration either.

I know you believed that the X1 was AT&T bound due to their initially being an AT&T panel on the X1, but that may of just been SE trying to entice AT&T. What do you now make of the fact their is a AT&T Rom for the Touch Pro?

Do you really think that AT&T will have both the Touch Pro and the X1 when they are so similar? and they will have the Touch Pro earlier to.

@Dogmann
Quite simply, the X1 frequencies match AT&T's, not T-Mobile's. Those providers are the only two players in the U.S. GSM market. So it's just a matter of deductive logic. AT&T has also been picking up on SE Walkman phones too.

I haven't heard anything about the TouchPro being on AT&T yet (not that it won't be). I'll check with my AT&T bud to see if there is any TouchPro release info yet. When I asked him before, he said he heard nothing of it. They usually have "release" meetings before products hit the shelves.

@WhyBe

THe X1 was targeted not as a AMerica device but more of an entry into the WM market worldwide to catch their falling sales in the smartphone market.

Just because you have'nt heard of the Touch Pro coming out on AT&T does'nt mean it wont . Since there is an AT&T ROM there will exist a phone with the right frequencies. The DIamond has an offical firmware upgrade to allow the 850Mhz band as well. The Touch Pro it seems is a replacement for the existing TilT which is nothing but the HTC TyTN II.

@aksd and @Dogmann:

I know you two are skeptical of any info from SE but here's further indication of X1 being primarily intended for North America (read last paragraph before reader questions). This does not mean it is not for the rest of the world, though (obviously, the X1i serves this purpose).

Perhaps the TouchPro will be branded as the AT&T Tilt 2. It will be the lower priced "generic/store brand" of the X1.

Here's evidence of the TouchPro going to T-Mobile.
This will put the TouchPro at a disadvantage to the X1 in the USA

Also, I have a question:
Is switching available frequency groups on a quadband phone a simple matter of a software update? IOW, is switching 850MHz to a 900MHz just a matter of a ROM update?

they can aim it at the USA all they want - it will still do better in Europe.

Even people who want the X1 in America will probably try to get hold of the X1i because of the better video recording and playback.

Perhaps

True. Though, general consumers won't know about the difference...just the tech heads and geeks.

I wonder if the U.S. TouchPro is going to have the same video restrictions as the X1a?

Of course SE are going to flatter an American site and all the Americans with this is aimed just for you that's just how PR works. But if this was true wouldn't the 2nd and lesser (a) version be aimed at Europe not the US? You really need to stop believing all the PR machine churns out just because it sounds good and you want it to be true.

We always new the Touch Pro would be coming to T-Mobile as they have a long history of of re branding HTC devices. Though why this puts it at a disadvantage to the X1 is beyond me. The X1 doesn't work on the T-Mobile US bands so all the T-Mobile users are bound to get the MDA version of the Touch Pro an X1 would be virtually useless to them.

This also won't stop AT&T having a Touch Pro either as they had the Tilt to T-Mobiles MDA before.

At least here in the UK we know that 3 will have the X1 but no other Networks have said so but some show the Touch Pro as coming soon but none show the X1 as coming soon.

Maybe you can let us now if and when a US network shows the X1 as coming soon?

Marc

LOL your proof is pointless, THe HTC TyTn II was on TMobile in EU as the MDA Vario III, was that available in the US as the Vario III , no its was the AT&T Tilt. And basically HTC have so much resources that they develop AT&T firmware for kicks right?

Regarding the bands, the Qualcomm processor supports all the bands avialbe today except the Chinese 3G ones, it depends wheather or not there exists the necesary antennae for these frequencies. It looks like it was present on the Diamond, and therefore a s/w update enabled it. It might not be the case with another phones such as the Samsung i900.

There is not MSM7200A version of the TOuch Pro only an MSM7201A version so VGA recording is completely out of the question

The "lesser" version is due to legal issues (SE and HTC). Don't you listen to aksd ?

We always new the Touch Pro would be coming to T-Mobile as they have a long history of of re branding HTC devices. Though why this puts it at a disadvantage to the X1 is beyond me.

U.S. T-Mobile sucks and not as popular. You have to live here to know!

The X1 doesn't work on the T-Mobile US bands so all the T-Mobile users are bound to get the MDA version of the Touch Pro an X1 would be virtually useless to them.

You don't know what you're talking about. The networks are compatible and seamlessly roam for the most part. AT&T uses the 850 band in a lot of rural areas (T-mobile doesn't at all). 3g for T-Mobile is 1700/2100MHz (850/1900 for AT&T). Using an AT&t phone on T-Mobile would only mean you get no 3G.

...Maybe you can let us now if and when a US network shows the X1 as coming soon?

Can't do that. AT&T is the only U.S. candidate for the X1. We don't have tons of GSM choices as you do over there, you know. So it's either AT&T or none at all. AT&T doesn't announce these sort of things apparently.

But that only means we have to buy unlocked X1's if AT&T doesn't subsidize it. I plan on getting the X1i anyway for the full video capabilities.

I was very clearly not saying an AT&T Touch Pro would work on T-Mobile as obviously it won't, but that if T-Mobile decide to have their MDA Version in the US it would be produced to work on their 3G bands. Which is why i said there MDA version in the comment you quoted maybe you should read it a little more carefully before jumping to wrong conclusions and accusing me of saying something i very obviously haven't. I mean you even quoted me where it clearly stated just that.

OK the lesser version i am well aware of the reasons for as i pointed them out to you ages ago. But even so wouldn't the first version and not the (a) version be for the US if that was it's primary market? is the point i am making. Which isn't the case is it?

Well at least a lot of time has passed and we are now getting closer to seeing just when it will release and just how good it will be at release to. Plus of course just how well it sells or not.

Just in case you are still curious i am of course still interested to see what the X1 delivers and how good it is but still don't want one or anything else so far announced to replace my E90.

X1 has always been listed on se dot co dot nz as Coming Soon and that means VodafoneNZ (our only GSM network until Nov). If VodafoneNZ are getting it then I would expect Voda UK to have it.

@mario2004, what are you, some sort of chihuahua following Dogmann around ?

All of the X1 hate on this thread isn't going to stop anticipation for this device.

Neither the X1 nor any comparable device is on the U.S. market yet. So what's with the bitching about the X1 not being released yet.....none of them are.

@Carkitter

Well there is no sign or mention of the X1 anywhere on the UK VodaFone site and i thought previously you had mentioned that you just don't get the same choice of phones on Voda as we do. So what we get offered and what you get offered are obviously very different, they must of had that as coming soon for a long time now, does it give an expected release date and price yet?
