There's rumours that ASUSTeK (parent company of ASUS) is bidding to buy HTC...
ASUS is already making their own phones ( Zen Phones ), mainly using Intel SoC.. but there's some news they might use Qualcomm as well.. they want to penetrate more markets, specially US and Europe.. so having HTC is a big opportunity for them
Thought, I was thinking of the idea of HTC + Sony Mobile merger... HTC has a large loyal customers, it's even larger than Sony customers in strong markets like US and Europe, Sony needs this... and HTC needs Sony technology and Design to overcome their weakness... Sony needs the strategy that HTC uses in the market, HTC is doing much better financially than Sony Mobile though they don't have any other supporter or strong back like Sony Mobile does ( Sony Mobile has, well Sony Corp. )
Both are struggling some how, and I feel that while it's not a perfect match, but both will fix many issues and build a very strong brand and any issues will come at the end will be much easier to fix than current in both companies
Now what the odd's of a name of such imaginary merger would look like

I do agree that a totally new design every year for a change could arguably serve them better in their current position if the other issues are fixed. with that said, generally, i don't think evolved design over 2-3 years is always bad idea because people don't buy a new phone every year and some not even every 2 years, similar design creates recognition and there is a limit to how much you can change in a design. anyway, it appears that mid range "lavender" design is influenced by that "y concept" as they look quite similar. is sony transitioning into that design? or maybe the tube? something else? who knows.
bottom line, i am expecting a big change in design from sony in q4, otherwise i would be disappointed as most here i think would. |

ASUS was thinking about it inside the company, there was no bidding. They already dropped this idea.

Sony's design? Come on, both companies are widely criticized because of the old design, it's one of the major reasons why their phones don't sell. |

Nokia's mobile division belongs to Microsoft. Nokia itself has no plans of going back to this market. |

Will never happen as long as playstation and xbox exist. ms is sony's rival in vg.
i think that sony don't need any merging but just keep doing what they are doing, outdo themselves and listen to criticism, like reading this forum and especially my posts. |

Sony should reintroduce full theme engine, just like in the 4.3-4.4 UI.
Samsung recently haven't had any theme engine, or options of customisation, in the meantime they introduced a fully customisable theme engine,

while Sony have heavily restricted the customisation options in 5.0 UI

Merging with another company would not do Sony Mobile any good. Sony Mobile must instead focus on making sure that their high-end phones and tablets get the best of Sony. Xperia series has not been able to become as successful as the Galaxy S series because of average photographic abilities (and average screen before). Every one on social media knows about it and the trolls do not help either. Sony Mobile must show in their flagship phones their true capability.
I am as eager as everyone to know the reason behind Sony Mobile's unresolved issues with the Xperia Z camera. Last year, they introduced video stabilization and PS Remote play, and both work like charm and the best in competition. The latter is even better that TiVo. However the camera is still have some lingering issues that seems beyond repair. The camera on Z3+ despite having wider lens, still have softening around the edges and looks smudgy, especially on Superior auto-mode. Of course, the panorama still disappointing and even bested by google's own app. Z3+ camera much better on paper that in reality.
Although Sony Z series (top tier) have generally good audio performance, it could have been better. For a company who was a pioneer in portable audio players, shouldn't their high-end offerings be dominating the competition in audio quality? Again, Sony Mobile incorporated some of their software enhancements on their phone like but do not really make a whole lot difference. The volume is a bit on the lower side and the stereo cross stalk changes quite significantly with the headset on. Sony should take inspiration from HTC, as M9 and M8 can reach above 100 decibels and produces really clean audio output. Same with LeTV MAx, which has an great audio chips built-in. We hope to see in Z series flagship the reason why Walkman became so popular few decades ago and became synonymous to great audio quality.
Compared few years ago, Sony Mobile screen are much better now. However there are still room for improvement. First, the black on Z3+ screen is not as deep as the one found on HTC M9 although it brighter. The contrast seem to have reduced as well. The viewing angles are better but the color shift is noticeable compared to HTC One M9. The contrast ratio also gets lowered in Z3+ indoors but gets boosted outdoors. I hope the Z3+'s successors have better viewing angles with very little color shift, indoor contrast ratio of 1500 while maintaining the same brightness, 4000 contrast ratio under sunlight and less reflective display.
When it comes to Xperia UI, It has changes a lot since 2013 and for the better. But It would be nice to find the software update (OS version) in the settings rather that in a separate app. Also, a flash support for the native browser and some few more enhancements like reading mode and optimization for longer browsing hours would be great additions. Lastly, addition of video player small app is nice as well to counter Apples floating video feature in iOS 9. Playing video in the background and opening multiple videos at the same time would be awesome as well. Of course, themes are essential nowadays. Sony were the first ones to offer themes but now the competition has caught up and offer a much deeper and flexible customization options. I hope to see Sony match the competition without slowing down the overall UI performance.
With the design, I really like the thinness and omni-balance philosophy except for the huge bezels. Sony must find a way to minimize the top and bottom bezels and maybe a bit more from the side in their future design. I am not expecting a bezel as little as ZL but maybe a bit closer to that (around 73% screen-to-body ratio). The glass back cover has gotten boring now. Metal back brings a breath-of-fresh-air to Sony's design. Also, a face plate that matches the color of the back cover is a welcome addition. Black face plate kinda ruins the aesthetic of the design if it does not have black back cover.
It has been a while since the last time I wrote an essay-like comment in this forum. Sony Mobile is a great company. They just have to learn on where they should focus all of their effort and resources. The thing is they hold back on things that can make a big difference in their situation right now. For example, they are a bit reluctant about adding RAW mode in Z flasgships and adopting the USB Type-C port. Many users have been clamoring about the RAW mode and USB Type-C is the new standard and both are supported by Google. Sony seems to be inconsistent with what the wanna do with their products. The Sony camera app have so many AR Modes and stuff but it does not support RAW mode which is more important. AR Modes are fun but who do actually post photos on Facebook or Flickr with these effects? Almost nobody but kids perhaps. RAW mode will help Sony appeal to the expert reviewers and these reviewers are the ones sales person refer to in how to sell their products or probably a regular person who's their friends often ask his opinion about buying smartphones. The thing is if your product is really good, you should not be have a hard time selling it. Because quality attracts buyers. When it comes to adapting to standards, Sony should not be hesitant. I did not like what they said about USB Type-C. It seems they are trying to do thing their own way and try to dictate the pace of technological advancement. What they should have said "we are looking into incorporating USB Type-C port in our future smartphones." One way or another, whether they like it or not, that is how things are going forward. It reminds me of the 3.5mm headphone jack issue of Sony Ericsson back then. Imagine SE launched a Walkman product without 3.5 mm jack. You see how Sony contradict their itself. This mentality of Sony has to go. it does not serve them any purpose.

Basically i agree with everything you wrote. i hope sony read our posts as a part of listening to consumers and learning from criticism. more focus on leap and leadership in quality then on marketing words and gimmicks. to add more, i think they should give up the ip certification IF that would let them surpass htc m9 in speakers quality, make the device less prone to heating, faster implementation of usb type c, and give other potential benefits.

"It seems they are trying to do thing their own way and try to dictate the pace of technological advancement."
I absolutely agree with this. Sony has this stubborn thinking that they are the game changer and could dictate what should be the standard for the time. This might be true back in 2004-2006 when they really are the game changer and that they could hold back their new technologies for the next season/year but it's now 2015! They are now an underdog! They should work harder because we all know they can especially when it comes to camera & audio quality.
Fix the goddamn camera of xperias! use a better lens, latest sensor, dedicated chips and yeah, remove the waterproofing if that's what the price we would pay for the best quality camera and audio. |
