@Brym: Isn't your Reltel internet access restrictive? if you travelled out of Lagos, wouldn't your Thera be useless?
I find my Glo GPRS access and 48kbps dialup internet access a satisfactory combination that keeps me clear of cybercafes.
There's a new company caled Netcom that offers 3G internet access in certain areas within Lagos for as low as 6k monthly. The only drawback is that you have to cough out a whooping 75K for the modem. Lower prices and better coverage could see the service blossoming. |

That entry price for MyNetCom is a bad barrier. When will our business people realize that the mass market is where the next action will be? The high-end market is so much saturated already that there's no point for anyone to release internet services targeted at that class.
One sure advantage - mobility and coverage aside - that Glo GPRS has is that with a handheld device, one is not crippled when Power Holding (or whatever name NEPA is now called) fails as they regularly do. On my commie, its 6 hours of moderately heavy use. With light use eg checking up mails, it would go a couple of days.

@amby: You're right Reltel's coverage is limited to Lagos. Even the use of Thera pocket pc is restricted to my home because I'm on Reltel's 8pm to 8am internet access plan. The office pc serves my day time internet requirements while my Compact Jam smartphone meets my mobile internet demands within and outside Lagos...thanks to glodirect. |

@Brym: you seem to have it covered on all fronts, good 4 you.
@Aya: I agree with you, I wish someone would come up with a cheaper solution aimed at the mass market. Which is what I had expected from Mweb. The high end segment is already saturated. On the power issue, for some reason, I just believe that we are almost out of the tunnel, its gonna get better soon.

@amby: I am not as hopeful on the issue of power. What we are experiencing now is the result of years of neglect. Its not even just a question of generating enough power. Almost every transformer on the ground is overloaded. The distribution lines are also highly inadequate. If we want a miracle in the area of power supply, my opinion is that we open the sector up the very same way telecoms was opened up. Look at NITEL/Mtel; inspite of the successes in telecoms, they are barely keeping up. If we allow private hands to set up plants and also distribute to cities, towns, localities and even estates, the picture will change fast! But even then NEPA (sorry, PHCN) as a company will underdeliver for years to come (just like NITEL is).
I once had internet access (8am~6pm) via Multilinks but ditched it for 2 reasons: poor service; and power supply. Multilinks left a bad taste in my mouth and NEPA made sure that even when the service worked fine, I couldnt make good use of the flat fee I was paying. Power goes off at 9am and is not restored at times till say 4pm! What was I paying 8am to 6pm for?
I once purchased a power generating set, but anyone who has used one will understand the hassles and expenses that tag along. When I got tired of it all, I sold the gen and it was in my search for workable solutions that I became an apostle of mobile data and the mobile office I got myself a smartphone and had over 80‰ of my office-data issues resolved.
When Glo announced GPRS, that was the icing on the cake. Now you all know how I became a die-hard mobile freak. _________________ http://yomiadegboye.net This message was posted from a Nokia 9500 Communicator.

Anyone got the MTN gprs settings yet? The gprs sign came up on my colleague's MTN-powered phone yesterday and he has been disturbing me to enquire from forum members. PM me if you've got it.
I pray that when eventually launched MTN's gprs charges will lower than Glo's to ensure competitive pricing in this area too. |

I think MTN is changing albeit slowly...check out their 4th year anniversary promo...30% tariff discount on calls after the first minute of the same call(mtn 2 mtn calls). I know it is not better than the glo or vmobile promos(with houses ,cars etc being offered) but it's something...or what do you think? |

Oh please forgive me, I just find it difficult to empathise with MTN
They make out to be a premium brand, that is if you accept that a utility can have such pretentions, but there is no difference in the quality of their service or the sofistication of their network.
I'm just a cheap and cheerful kinda guy

@Egunjespoilagos: were you turned down on a job offer by MTN? Your bad belle for them pass normal. At least be happy for those poor MTN users who have been groaning under the weight of Nigeria's "best connection" there seem to be better days ahead.

Amby: Truth be told, I actually have done some work for them and they paid. I just enjoy ribbing them. They take themselves too seriously. My rants should not be taken too seriously though I stand by my criticism of them

@ egunje... I think u've a mate here 'bout the MTN stance. Their biz approach is rather too Macchiavellian.
@ all should we digress a bit...? most of these fast food outlets dont actually sell fresh food in case u dont know by now. I got some rice in one of the Tantis outlets in I.B and men it rotten and upon my complaints they were apologising like babies. Just tot i shld chip this in so u dont exhibit absolute trust in these outlets. |

I once got stale salad at Biggs Ojodu. The manager couldnt even see with me after I pointed it to him. Plus countless ocassions of dead flies in their rice packs .
SS Olowoira is guilty of consistently serving rice that's not properly cooked. Some grains are so hard!
Only place I've had no issues yet is TFC.

Hungry as you are, I am sure that you would enjoy this protracted discussion about 'buka' food! |
