With the other flashtool, as I already mentioned you can use PC Companion as well as SUS. Nor do you need root.
And most importantly, if you unlock bootloader Sony will NOT honor your warranty.

You can flash custom ROM's without unlocking the bootloader ( or with carrier locked device ) you only need it to be rooted...
but the limitation over unlocked bootloader is that you can only use custom ROM's with the stock Kernel, you can't use custom kernels without unlocking... ROM's like CM for example requires custom kernel so these can't be installed on locked bootloader...

Heh you see I am the complete noob in this topic!
I don't know what is the difference between unlocking bootloader and rooting.

In unix/linux world which Android is based on there's a special account named "root" which can do any thing in the system, it has access to all files, and able to change everything... it's like Super Administrator in Windows
in Android, the default and for security reason you're a regular user, not a "root" user...
to give you a simple example, Any application can only access it's data, so no application can access other application's data, like if you have a bad software it won't be able to access gmail data for example... or you can't backup any app data. as any backup application won't have access to any other app's data
If you rooted you phone, then you just set the default user to be the "root" user... and by using simple root managers like SuperSU or SuperUser, you can give specific apps the full "root" rights, in our simple example if you gave the root right for a backup tool like Titanium Backup, then it will have the rights to access everything and will be able to make a backup for any application including it's data...
Unlocking the bootloader is another story...
Every phone, even PC's tablets, every device where's an OS exist... there's a location in the memory called the bootloader, this place where the device reads when it boot ( start from cold off )...
The first thing the bootloader loads is the Kernel which handles all the very root of the OS like loading drivers for example...
When you have a locked bootloader then there's a special signature in both the bootloader and the kernel so the bootloader will see if the kernel has a matched signature or not, if the signature is a match then the bootloader will continue and the phone will boot...
if the signature is un matched or there's no signature ( like custom kernels ) then the bootloader will not continue with the boot process and the device will just stops or restart...
unlocking the bootloader means that the signature checking thing will not be used, so the bootloader will load the kernel what ever it was...
What I meant with when you have a locked bootloader you can only use ROM's with stock kernel is that stock kernels still have the signature that the bootloader checks, so it will boot normally...
unlocked bootloader and root are different things, both give's you more rights and more freedom but root happens to the outer shell of the OS including applications... Bootloader in the other hand handles more deep things...
for example the stock kernel will set the CPU speed to a specific value, in Xperia Z situation it will be 1.5GHz, and there's no way to change it as this is hard written in the kernel it self...
If you use a custom kernel you will able to have higher clocks, Xperia arc users used higher clocks and reached even 1.2 and 1.4GHz... and some kernels comes with adjustable CPU speed which can be changed using specific apps or even a function built in in the custom ROM

@doministry
If you want minimal risk then don't unlock your bootloader.
Just use Flashtool and ftf files from xda.
The difference between unlocking your bootloader and rooting
Rooting will allow you to give access to the FULL file system of your FW to specific apps on demand. This means that you can allow your file browser to browse system apps and you can allow your app for backing stuff up access to the apps core files for backing up. It is akin to having the admin password for your Windows PC, you can really start to modify stuff.
Rooting will not stop PC Companion or SUS/SEUS from working in the future nor will it interfere with any of the phone's functionality or void your warranty
Rooting has no affect on whether or not you can use Flashtool or the Sony Flash Tool to install the latest FWs.
Unlocking the bootloader will give you access to flashing the kernel (a base part of the FW). Some developers write ROMs that require their own kernels. Access to flashing custom kernels is similar to being able flashing a custom BIOS to your motherboard in your Windows PC.
Unlocking the bootloader will disable Bravia Engine, TrackID, future updates through official Sony paths (SEUS/PCC and void your warranty.
Unlocking the bootloader has no affect on whether or not you can use Flashtool, however the Sony Flash Tool requires that your bootloader is unlocked.
Bottom line:
Unless you really want to try CyanogenMod or any of the ROMs that require a custom kernel you really shouldn't unlock the bootloader as it can cause you hassle in the future. Rooting, however, is an everyday task that should make your life easier and your phone more functional.
Try this if you like the stock browser from T. It is the stock ICS browser but with a few extra subtle features to make life easier.

Hahaha. I don't hate S4 as if I care but I'm tired of people whining around here about Samsung, like nobody gives a sh*t and still they want to act like women.
Anyway, we've seen lot of underwater videos of XZ, has anybody came across dust resistance videos?
