Sony kick-starts joint-venture with InterDigital and licenses its patents for 3G and 4G products

Importantly, the agreement between the two parties also includes a patent license from InterDigital for Sony’s 3G and 4G products.

Just yesterday, word got out that Canadian BlackBerry smartphone and tablet maker Research in Motion agreed to an extended and expanded patent license agreement with InterDigital, adding coverage for 4G (including LTE and LTE-Advanced) products.

InterDigital has in the past made headlines by being named a possible acquisition target for the likes of Google, Apple and Qualcomm, when Intel agreed to buy 1,700 patents related to WiFi, 3G and LTE from them for a cool $375 million, and with its ongoing patent feud with Nokia.

Just yesterday, InterDigital filed a complaint (PDF) with the U.S. International Trade Commission against Huawei, Samsung, Nokia, ZTE and others for selling certain 3G and 4G wireless devices that allegedly infringe up to seven of its U.S. patents.

This license patent deal & specifically the JV between the two is SIGNIFICANTLY more important than I think anyone here truely realizes? Sony fans ... read on ... bare with me as it may first sound like a RIM/BB fanboyism but read it fully, check the links so you understand the point I'm trying to make here and WHY Sony made the joint venture NOT just simply purchasing license rights.

What is RIM known for in terms of consumers?
- BlackBerry devices, real-push email and their provider deals for security of traffic!
What is RIM known for in terms of Entperirse?
- NOC! End to End Security Solution for Email, Collaboration Services/Resources hosted by Enteprise behind the firewall.
- Access as the end user to those resources behind the firewall without the user being prompted for their AD account (this means no need for a VPN because the connection is secured and has YET to be cracked by ANYONE ANYWHERE)!
- Proper management of corporate data in the mobile space - not even Microsoft can claim with WinXP/Win7/Win8/Server2008/2012/SCCM2012 such an end to end solution; RIM has pioneered delivery of this solution (NTP has the patents for which RIM, Good Technology, and many others are using regardless of platform).
What is the real power of RIM?
- Carrier APN's access to a network of GGSNs/SGGSN's (internet gateways) that our mobile devices use directly to connect to the internet - using our SIM cards or old school TDMA/CDMA/S-TDMA networks (by way of ESN) ... along with .. .
- QNX (recall Cisco uses this in their ASA's and many other switching hardware that just about the global internet internet runs on! Yes there are other players like Motorola, Ericsson, former Nortel, Alcatel-Lucent, Siemens-Nokia, VMWare made a huge deal with Nicira back in October 2012 http://mobile.bloomberg.com/n[....]tionship-after-nicira-buy.html to go head to head with Cisco in a software solution vs their hardware) ... but QNX is not just overhauling their mobile smartphones (that would NOT be a fully end to end platform) ... its about RIM's
- NOC! Network Operations Centre ... the backbone to their entire business!!

Take a look at what QNX really does ...
http://www.qnx.com/solutions/industries/defense.html
Ecosystem:
http://www.qnx.com/solutions/industries/defense.html#ecosystem
and most importantly ...
Customers ... or Machine-2-Machine business:
http://www.qnx.com/solutions/industries/defense.html#customers

^ THIS my friends is the hidden END game that RIM is after, not just the mobile business!! We will not hear about this on January 30th ... but this is HUGE business and Sony is one of the handful of business' that can have their take on the Enterprise and Consumer space for Machine-2-Machine business like you don't understand:
PlayStation Network
seemless and timely updates to the PS3s/Vista's etc.
its based on Linux (Yellow Dog Linux worked originally on the PS3 OS/Kernel)
Now lets put all that into an end to end solution?

Now you get the picture!!

Say hello to Convida Wireless

According to a statement, the newly formed JV will combine Sony’s consumer electronics expertise with InterDigital Solutions’s wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) and bandwidth management research.

@maiaramdan,

Why thank you! I'm surprised someone took the time to read it and not vilify me first

I'm looking forward to seeing what Sony can do with this! They can partner with other hardware vendors or challenge QNX's stronghold in the car MMI market (that interface for car telemetry, stereos, GPS, car sensors, etc etc).

RIM specifically stated about Machine-2-Machine goals ... here.
http://www.marklives.com/word[....]pt-2-secrets-of-blackberry-10/

Think of a car manufacturer that sells cars globally, and needs to address all in-car computers from a certain series, and get a message out, like ‘Put the car in the garage for the next 24 hours because we are giving it a big software update’. How many vehicle recalls do you see these days? Imagine the time and cost that can be saved if we can provide telemetry data from all these cars, on a globally connected system, and with the endpoints managed for reliability and security.

Sony on the other hand can use this for ...
Point of Sale Systems - think NFC global mobile payments, sharing of money Pay-Pal can survive as the king yet competion is VERY healthy ..
Home Security,
Home Appliance control (washers, dryers, Fridge, TV, PVR/PS3, PSEye - watch over babysitter watching your kids, securely),
Backup Generator control/enabling in the event of a huge storm/tsunami/hurricane (think Sandy like but worse),
control of power use in your house ...
- beyond just using LED lights, control outside lights/1 room inside lights to thrawt potential intruders when on vacation, turn off lights when kids fall asleep (sure automation works, but what about your son/daughter being 5yrs old cannot sleep nightmares when light is off, babysitter has SAT's to study for so remains awake in living room, your son/daughter is awake for 2hrs lying in bed eyes barely open, babysitter will check when odd scream/noise/call is made but not every 5mins while studying ... YOU from Xperia remotely control kids lights out when sensors in room show REM sleep based on beathing or sheet sensors show no more agitiation/movement.
Aggregation of other Android devices in cars ahead of you to sense pot-holes on road ahead,
Gas Station has an alert of a fire in a car connected to a pump that you're about to pass by or drive into (yes EVADE!). This goes beyond what GoogleMaps offers you.
this is just the low hanging fruit but there are bigger things bigger uses, bigger potential here for Sony.

More rumours about Sony internet TV going around

http://www.theverge.com/2013/[....]ernet-television-service-rumor

I'd heard that Stringer wanted to work on something like this, but couldn't make it a reality back then. Gonna be interesting to see if this comes true. I imagine such a service would be spread across their TVs, PS3, Blurays, tablets, phones and anything else that can play streaming videos from the net.

TRANSLATE!

BTW, anyone want to venture a guess at what Sony would have to do to become a global Internet Service Provider? What sort of costs would be involved? I know it's almost certainly not likely to ever happy, but it would be a good way for them to make money from ISP subscriptions and from their internet cable TV service if they can choose to not have it affect total data caps or anything. My guess is it'd take many, many billions for them to become an ISP of that scale, but it would be interesting

BTW, did y'all know Sony is already technically an ISP? Based on this, is it REALLY that far fetched that Sony could want to expand their ISP reach to other countries/contintents?

EDIT
Dacha, that pic also seems to say it'll have micro HDMI... doesn't seem to be present in Yuga, so how likely is it that it'll be on Odin?

Doubt it, they seem to be more into scratch resistances than overall strength. Ever see videos of Dragontrail glass? Impressive, not only from impact but even from bending it. Needs to become Sony's main glass on it's phones, retire mineral glass.

I fully agree. I must say though, Sonys mineral glass is amazing stuff. My x10a has been dropped probably about 20 times on wood, and concrete without a single thing happening to the screen. Then I discovered the shatterproof sheet and removed it... then I dropped it another 10-15 times on wood and concrete, lol. So far it only has a tiny scratch on the glass itself, but no cracks... amazing stuff.

Beast ^ I use to walk around nervous with my Neo thinking one drop and is all over! I've seen many crack even the Xperia Go's screen, not so rugged lol. I don't think I'll be worry about dropping the Z on either side though (:

Yea, can't wait for people like Gizmoslip to do a Yuga drop test... should pass with flying colours.

Hmmmm... I should buy Sony stock... I'm thinking things will go up, up and further up... can't go much more down!
