It was an easy mistake to make at the time because my sig said "SE and Vodafone sponsor motorsport in OZ" . I've since made my sig and location less ambiguious. plus there was no best NZer category, just best Australian (for this region) and I understood the gesture that people were making.
Doesn't mean that I didn't visit the Australians - Where are you? thread and blow a raspberry though!
Kinda got me choked up to be recognised like that!

Hahaha, good old Trans-Tasman rivalry.
Maybe we can have a NZ section next year. Or perhaps Australasian at least!

NZ website shows V640, K770i and W910i as available.
K850i and W960i are 'coming soon'
No sign of T650 or W890 yet.

Yep, stated that a few posts ago
I'm thinking phones like the T650 won't be coming

K850i is no longer 'coming soon'!
Hopefully we see it before Christmas!
PI have it for just under $900, I wonder what Vodafone will sell it for!

Either $799 or $899 is my guess.
BTW the laptop is fixed!

Those guesses seem a little low for a higher spec SE phone coming out. I'd say $999 at the very least!
I really do hope Voda will prove me wrong though.
Congrats on getting the laptop fixed! I'll expect to see you around more often then!

Man... If the T650i came to NZ, I'd buy it in an instant.

The way Vodafone is dumping product on the market, I'd expect to see a whole new range soon... W950 $299 at Dick Smith Electronics
I think K800i stock is disappearing, must be time for K850i. Maybe Vodafone is nervous about the K850i camera criticism? Parallel Imported pulled the S500 pretty quickly after the Keypad controversy hit the internet and it hasn't returned, but they still have the W580.
I'm watching to see if the N95-8GB arrives soon, or if the old N95 lands in the Vbox with a discount! Certainly K850i at $999 vs the N95... K850i wouldn't move IMO.

I've never seen someone with a W950i ever, so I'm not too surprised about it's low price. Although that is some decent kit for that money! I don't think I'd give up my V630i for one though.
Interesting though, that Parallel Imported stocks the K850i with all its problems and yet doesn't have the S500i due to a keypad problem which is supposedly fixed/doesn't happen to everyone. But then, their stock of SEs has dropped in numbers significantly. Maybe they just sold out of S500is.
The price of the K850i has dropped from around $999 to $749 at Parallel Imported in a reasonably short space of time too, so perhaps it will come out on Vodafone cheaper than expected? (I wish)
Do you know whether the N95 sold well her? That would be a good way to tell whether the 8GB version will arrive. If the N95 didn't sell, then theres not much chance for the 8GB unless they do an even bigger advertising campaign!

The N95 is Nokia's Flagship model; there are billboards all over Auckland CBD saying "This is what computers have become" which is the N95 tag line. I think that at the intro price of $1699, it looked horribly expensive but with the reputation it has gained and the lack of a real competitor from any other manufacturer, the new price of $999 represents good value. It's hard to see them not insisting VodafoneNZ pick up the 8 gig version to continue the momentum.
Having said that, I suspect that Vodafone bulk-order much of thier range and won't consider allowing the 8GB version until the old model has sold out, hence I'm expecting a deal to arrive in th Vbox soon...
I also think that Nokia have positioned themselves well with the N95. It has a great combination of features and this formula should be able to continue for some time yet. As I said in another thread, I'd expect to only see detail changes to memory, camera and connectivity specs on a regular basis.
I'm disappointed that NZ didn't promote the K800i better and sharpen the price a little to increase volume. They obviously took a long term veiw of this model and then got caught out when the K810i and K810i ivory models appeared overseas. Now they've had to slash prices to speed things up a bit just to get the next generation on the shelves in NZ.
I ask you (rhetorically), is this Amateur Hour? Is Sony Ericsson New Zealand operated from the boot of someones car? Or a home office? Where was the advertising on TV and in magazines, in the NZ Herald, to capitalise on the ASB Classic tennnis tournament, a round of the WTA tour? During the televised prize-giving, the SENZ marketing manager was present; was this just a junket - some free food and grog at Christmas, a perk to look important and meet celebrities? Or was he there to oversee Sony Ericsson New Zealand's second biggest Marketing opportunity in this country?
Their biggest Marketing opportunity in New Zealand is of course the V8 Supercars which attracts a massive crowd over 3 days and is broadcast live to a very large TV audience too. I was at the last Pukekohe round last year and was disappointed to find that there was absolutely no support from VodafoneNZ or NZ for TeamVodafone, no competitions/special prices/advertising at all coinciding with the event or the appearance of the drivers who both went on to challenge for the championship. I realise that this is an Australian inititive and not directly related to the New Zealand branches of Vodafone and . But one must ask, is this because Australia has inititive? And a real desire to sell thier products and accessories? TeamVodafone's first year has been a major success!
I really think its about time fans in New Zealand start an email campaign to Sweden or even Dickie himself and ask why NZ choses to cower is the presence of NZ market leaders Nokia, whether this almost non-existant niche market plan is what they really have in mind for marketing in this country.
If all the worlds a stage and we are but players, NZ is a tree in the background with no lines...
As I see it. Sorry for the rant.

The thing about handset choices is that this is Vodafone's choice, NOT SE's. It's easy to wask why we dont' get more form them here, and to a degree maybe they should direct market a little more, however even in the cooler models if VFNZ doesn't want it, they won't pick it up, they won't type approve it and they won't bring it in at all.
Should SE then bring in stocks they know won't be distributed through the various dealers because it's not a vodafone approved and tested handset, that will fail on various parts of vodafone live because of this, well no. That's what parallel importers and trade me fill in quite nicely. (Though admittedly I just picked up my p1i from trademe as it was cheaper than contract term phones from VF and completely unbranded in anyway. Just how I like my SE's lol)
In case you're wondering why I say no and not HELL YES, vodafone's dealerships are encouraged by vodafone (to sell certain models, when 3g was in it's infancy that's what vodafone wanted sold over non 3g phones. Dealers wouldn't be able to claim non approved handsets in this, so wouldn't benefit them as much. (The one's that like SE however no doubt might)
It'll also place an unnessecary amount of "bug/problem" related calls to SE's local helpline that may be because of firmware setup for the phone but not for our intended market. (Again through skipping vodafone's testing)
This is also a commentary on TCL (TelstraClear) and any other start up mobile company, surely if reselling vodafone's products they'd at least have tried to negotiate some sort of control over handsets they could also sell. Now that TCL has moved to reselling TCNZ's network and not voda's, well their choice in handsets is going to be set fairly well form now on. (EI the 1-2 possibly nice handsets that TCNZ have lol)
There was a time some of the SE ad's played here in NZ, IIRC it was either the k750 or the w800i one that did. I'm not sure however how noticed or how well they helped though. Maybe they didn't?
Their biggest marketing channel is actually the dealerships, unfortunately they're about as clueful as a cinderblock filled with stupid. I remember when one came into work to offer some guys phones, they were pushing a moto and a nokia at the time, i asked "hey when's the p990 coming?" "Um, it's not" they replied. Well I knew otherwise at the time, but what a maroon. A one off you might say? Sadly no.
Either way i'm sure SE might be able to do better, but with vodafone keeping tight reigns over what gets put on their network, there is only so much they can do.
Now to go update the order for my 8gig m2. Finally my zen is going to be rested at home after some faithful service. |

Vodafone's reign as sole supplier of product will be coming to an end as TelecomNZ gears up their long overdue GSM network. This would be a good time for SENZ to get a better deal out of Vodafone, but I'm sure they'll probably be suckered into doing an exclusive deal which maintains the staus quo.
www.sonyericsson.co.nz appears to be maintained from overseas as it contains info that is not relevant to SENZ's half-hearted attempt at a model range, it contains accessories that SENZ and VodafoneNZ have no intention of supplying, and indeed Sony Style and SENZ staff are ignorant of what it contains at all.
I worked for HondaNZ during the ninties. Honda bought CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits of Civic and Accord models and assembled them in Nelson. These cars used NZ spec carpets and upholstery which placed them above JDM in specification. The kitsets were bought in bulk in a joint purchase with HondaAUS to keep prices down.
The same principle would work for SENZ. Bulk purchase with VodafoneAUS or get the overflow from VodafoneUK. You can't tell me that VodafoneNZ has that much trouble creating/developing locking software for phones.
