Well, updated girlfriends Arc yesterday, and now it has the same low crap audio as Neo and Ray.
Not as bad as Vivaz Pro, but definitely too poor to be useful.
Audio in SE Aino and Nokia N82 is much better.
Check for yourself.
Arc, Neo and Ray needs that same record-volume as Aino before video-recording can be used for anything. (And how the Vivaz ever got away with being branded as a video-recorder I have no clue. It's completely useles for that exact function). |

Why are you using a phone for proper video recording?
Nokia 6070 (2006-2009),  K550 (second hand 2009-2010),  Hazel (J20i) (2010-2011), Samsung Galaxy S II (2011-2012), Samsung Galaxy S III (2012-2014), Sony Xperia Z3 (2014-) |

Because the manufacturer says it can be used for it, and I don't want to carry two devices with me, and the (image) quality is quite good enough for me, even on Aino (except in dark surroundings).
Don't call it proper video-recording then, whatever you mean by that. I can definitely settle for phone quality from N82 and Aino. And I'd rather keep on using Aino with proper audio, than superb Full-HD^2 + crap audio.

I like the size of Ray. It's exactly the size for an Android device I've been waiting for ever since Android devices started coming out.
Now if only they'd fix the audio-recording, it would be perfect for me.
But I guess I have to look to XDA-developers if I want the perfect device. |

Just on lunch now and passed O2 store and played with a live working Ray. A bit over rated i must say it really does not look or feel that special in the flesh so to speak. Screen is too narrow for my liking too. Not sure what all the fuss is about
Hey Bonovox, I was initially going to upgrade from my X10 Mini Pro to the Xperia Mini Pro... but I've tried both the Mini Pro and ray and I prefer the ray.
One, the screen res is way higher than the Mini Pro, this allows more app compatibility than the Mini or Mini Pro. It has the same res as the arc.
Two, it's a LOT smaller. The Mini and Mini Pro may be shorter, but they are both a lot thicker. Volume-wise, the ray wins out, and it's a lot easier to slip into a shirt chest pocket, or back jeans pocket. It's also a lot lighter
Three, Camera "should" be better. I haven't had a chance to do an A/B in equal lighting for both, but it supposedly has the Exmor low-light sensor and a bigger f-stop (2.4 vs 2.6 for the Mini Pro)
My primary purpose for getting my X10MP was it was one of the smallest Android phones on the market, the ray surpassed that and gave me a much better screen (more than 2x the res of the Mini and Mini Pro) It also has better 'claimed' battery life...I'll believe that when I actually try it out for an enduro test.

Mini & Mini Pro yes may be a little chubby but the screen is a better wider size imo for me anyway. And I just thought the feel of the Ray was nothing THAT amazing. From previews(not sure of finished product)the Ray photos are like the Neo in other words not as much detail as Arc. But to me even Arc is average in terms of quality photos. The Nokia N8 is still the camera to beat. The Mini Pro has very solid build

There is a vast difference between x10 mini pro and mini pro. Screen is bigger and many more. No doubt, ray has more pixel density then mini pro so ray screen should be sharper and brighter then mini pro. Battery is 1500 mAh and mini pro has 1300 mAh. So ray should last long. Other difference between ray and mini pro is exmor R sensor. In count, 4 major changes - Screen, battery, 8.1 mp with Exmor R, Thickness. Other main things like processors and ram are same. I am not defending mini pro or condeming ray. I dont have any of them. But i am planning to buy one either mini pro or ray. So far Mini pro wins race for me.

Exmor R just produces more noise. Even on the Sony camera I have Sony HX9v it's better on that cos it's a proper camera but night images they get too smoothed out. Sony Exmor R is trying to remove the noise but all they do is smooth it out which then smudges detail Another thing I never realised with the Ray is not shutter key. It really does help taking more steady shots with a shutter key

Have you noticed any difference between screen responsiveness(speed) of the mini/ray?

Don't really understand this, if my program to calculate width (x, in mm) and height (y, in mm) is correct :
3.3 inches @ 480 x 854 pix => x = 41, y = 73, d = 84 xperia ray
3.0 inches @ 320 x 480 pix => x = 42, y = 63, d = 76 xperia mini / x8
3.5 inches @ 480 x 800 pix => x = 46, y = 76, d = 89 san francisco
3.7 inches @ 480 x 854 pix => x = 46, y = 82, d = 94 xperia neo
3.7 inches @ 480 x 800 pix => x = 48, y = 81, d = 94 desire s / nexus one
3.5 inches @ 640 x 960 pix => x = 49, y = 74, d = 89 iphone 4
Anyway, I liked it and bought it, but then I've only bought four mobile phones in my life including the Ray, and the one before the Ray was a £10 Nokia

Yes but they still made the screen more narrow but fitted more pixels in. Yes,it looks sharper but it's narrower

Well it's not really any noticeable amount narrower, but yes, it does have more pixels in that space. Which might be good (things will look sharp), or bad (things will look small) depending on if the content being displayed is a fixed amount of pixels or can scale to the resolution available. It's about as small a screen as I'd want though, I almost bought the Neo, but preferred the design of the Ray and thought the smaller screen but more pocketable tradeoff was a good one. Not having had a smartphone before it's all a guess in the usability stakes as I have no previous experience, and nothing to compare it with. The Mini Pro has the advantage of a hardware keyboard, I guess no on-screen keyboard is displayed when that is used which gains some space (or do you always get the virtual keyboard as well) ? |

Is the screen of the ray narrower than the mini? Or is it just taller? Kinda like SD vs HD
