I am well excited about this phone but im not too happy with the prices they have set for the iPhone and the contract. Im only 17 unemployed and full time education, i have 3 grand but i just do not want to waste 650 pound of my money on this device. I had the first iPhone and im happy about the new one but not rele happy with the price.

The biggest problem with 3G is the cost to implement it.
Also the networks stand to lose alot on their investment on an ever changing and upgrading system.

Eg: In South Africa, between 2 of the biggest networks they have +/- 11000 base stations and 95% coverage on the GSM network while the UMTS network has 7000 base stations and only 2.5% coverage.
So if you work out how many base stations would be needed for 95% UMTS coverage its just way to expensive.

Maybe smaller countries will launch 14MB I doubt others will.

Back on topic, are these 3G iphones Voda branded?

Guys/Mods, are we allowed to talk about "unlocking" matters on this site?

Well, as no one has said "NO"...

So, the general consensus is that unlike with the previous iPhone we won't be able to buy the phone contract free in order to "activate it at home"

The calculated rumours though are that the PAYG iPhones will come in at between 300 - 350 for the 8gb model. And 400 - 450 for the 16gb model.

This will then leave the possibility for deflowering the iPhone

BUT BUT BUT, and this is the main point of me starting this subject on this thread, what are the chances of losing a lot of the iPhones functions by unlocking it? Will we lose things such as Visual Voicemail? App store? Software upgrade? etc etc etc And, with the new "push" stuff going on also, what are the chances of Apple somehow "bricking" unlocked phones via the "push" system?

Questions, worries, uncertainties.......... But lets hope we can crush these 3

Vodafone New Zealand will be the first to release the 3G iPhone. The phone will be available at 1 store in each of the following cities - Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch - at 00:01 Friday 11th July and at most other stores from 9am the same day. The phone will also be available for purchase from the Online store from 00:01 on Friday. The NZ iPhone is NOT available on Prepay and details of the plans which accompany the NZ$199+ price will be available 10am tomorrow NZ time (10pm Monday UK time).

More details: http://view.eid.co.nz/?ice=175FZ3PFHG9

Whether I purchase on Friday or not, I'll go along to the Auckland store at midnight and take some pics for y'all.

So you paid for the last iphone but you think the new one is too expensive even though its hugely cheaper than the first one?????

Might I suggest a part time job?

Just received a text from O2 that all upgrade customers can pre-register at www.o2.co.uk/upgradeonline be patient as it seems their servers are rather busy

I just spent 30 minutes talking to various departments at o2 and none can confirm what HDSPA speed the iphone 3g will support. I explained that 3g is the whole point of the new model and sureley they have tested it on their network and must know its capabilities... but no, no one had a clue.

I did have their network performance explained to me and that is that 80% of the population has 3g coverage and 100% of that is HSDPA at 1.6mbits and they're half way through rolling out 3.6mbits

I then spoke to apple and it took 25 minutes of them not knowing and not having the info available, and only when the support lady asked "some more technical colleagues" did they suggest the HSDPA speed is 7.2mbps, but none would commit to it!

I've got mine ordered so one of the first things I'll be doing on Friday evening is a few speed tests!
