As well as the 3-way jog-dial, I don't like the need to plug in an extra module at the bottom just to get a headphone socket. Apart from that it looks good.

And as usual Eldar went and let out a piece to spark a new rumor. He said there would be another qwerty-less smartphone in about 6 months and it'll be shorter too. |

I was wondering about somthing regarding the new OS, i know it can't be confirmed yet.
My mate has an A1000 and as it has no keys, it automatically defaults to the phone feature (a screen with the number buttons).
I know you can access this screen on the P910, but I haven't been able to find an option on my P910 to allow me to have this as my default screen in flip removed mode, and I assume its not possible although I think it would be great if it was, as the virtual flip has tiny buttons and its a pain to use the stylus to dial a number.
I think it would be nice to have this on the P990. It would also be handy as the numbers on the QWERTY are all in a line rather than layed out in the normal "phone" style.
Oh my god! a wooden goat!. |

I bought a PDA2k this time last year, and at the time it had fantastic features. But it was horrible to use, unreliable, etc. I got rid of it earlier this year.
I think a lot of people will be tempted by Pocket PC smartphones features, but will then discover how bad they are to use.
I haven't yet owned a Symbian phone (the P990 is likely to be my first, unless I get a P910 as an interrim measure!), but I'm hoping they're considerably better.
On the other hand, Windows is a pretty crude OS for PC's yet it's very widely used. How common something is isn't necessarily an indication of how good it is.
I had a Treo 600 before the PDA2k. It's a shame palm have lost the plot. They've let their OS become horribly out of date, their hardware is a few years behind the competition. Symbian is my final hope... |

From a business point of view, ive always found the P series to be rather lacking in professional features that i need, rather than want.
Thats why i stick to using a K750i as my phone, and a proper Windows based PDA such as an i-mate for my business needs.
Im hoping the P990i will finally allow me to be able to replace both now.

Speaking about new phone's features, we seem to miss the real thing:
All of software we run on our P800/900/910
WILL NOT RUN on P990!
This is what SS (Symbian Signed program) is for.

It's worse than that. Only signed programs can be run and signing costs hundreds of dollars for the developer. End of freeware and free upgrades. |

Hi bilbobaggins,
I fully agree with you. I own a P910i and an XDA II mini (Imate Jam in some countries). I am still awaiting for Mr Indian to "advise" me of the following :

I understand there are more apps for PPC, but quantity doesn't automatically means quality imho... One thing that PPC truly beats P910i is videos, cos its CPU power is higher hence smoother videos, which I sincerely hoped P990i's new generation Philips Nexpedia chipset can perform much better to close the gap

a w990
remove the querty, put there instead some music buttons
increase the memory to 1GB and include a 1GB stick
make it abit smaller, keep the crome look but include some black instead of the silver stuff

It is great to read from eldar's review that the reason provided by SE in not providing a stereo jack is the plan to incorporate stereo bluetooth transmission. That's great! I, for one, will not be bothered with a wired connection if I can get hold of a bluetooth stereo headset and listen to everything the P990 plays through bluetooth. Of course, there is still the speaker when bluetooth is disabled. I believe by the time the P990 is launched, SE will have a branded stereo bluetooth headset in the market as well.
I'm excited cos I'm one of those crazy guys who is not only love listening to music but also love to catch a video of my choice before I dose off to sleep at night. But that's just me...
I don't know about you guys, but I just can't wait for the P990 to launch. |

Definitely plugs all the holes for me BUT a headphone socket is a must, bluetooth will be cool but in flight mode I need headphones. 3 way jog is another suck. The 750i camera is good enough for most situations. It will be my next phone but only as soon as the software catches up. .. maybe a new thread for Software that needs re-jigging for UIQ 3.
My must haves:
Opera 8 is done
Databank
Documents to go
PDF +
Project
PowerNavigate
PowerProtect (or similar)
Safe (or similar)
Smartmovie or AVI built in
Unreal (or OGG and playlists for built in player)
Tome Raider (3 please).
Stowaway keyboard
and Zip support (Symb ZIP or similar)
I'll buy when these are ready.
But I'd really miss
Advanced English
Ezitap
Handy Day
IM+
Magic Profiles Pro
Power Calc
Power Converter
Resco photo viewer
Sloved Dictionaries
Tube
and Voice Translator
Just for completeness I'd like
Soldier Ants
Photo Pro
SMAN
