Latest version is 6.1 if I remember correctly, available from here:

As I said though, it's only really if you use the pro version that you need to have the most up to date version since the free version only blocks certain ports and applications that you haven't allowed.
Which is what a firewall is meant to do! Leave virus and spyware removal to your antivirus and antispyware apps, these all-in-one 'internet security suites' often cause more problems than they solve in my experience.

Hey all
Recently I tried to burn a film to DVD but the software I tried to use said no drives had been detected. I went into my computer and found out that both my CD drives had vanished. I tried to put a CD into both but nothing happens.
The first drive is a standard DVD ROM drive
The second is CD-RW drive
I then went into device manager and found an exclamation mark by both the drives! It said something about no hardware found (code 41) !!!!!!!

have you taken your pc apart lately? i wouldnt of thought so but that happened to me once. the ide cable had come loose. otherwise can you think of anything that might of caused this?

Nope I havent touched the computer. The first thing I thought of was that a cable had come out but I dont see how. I guess Ill have to have a look inside the computer. Any other ideas? |

uninstall the cd drives from device manager. then reboot. if it finds them again (add hardware wizard) then re install drivers. if not then i think theres a connection problem

After some extensive research I have found out that some registry keys had been deleted. It seems I am not the only one this has happened to.

The DVDs aren't recognised by Windows as being DVDs. The autoplay feature shows that a blank CD has been insterted, but explorer shows a size of 0 bytes. Interestingly when I installed Roxio explorer did recognise them as blank DVDs and showed their capacity correctly.
A I said I installed Roxio, but it didn't work either. Again it said that the write speed was 2.4x and this is the speed it attempted to burn at.

if windows isnt regnosing it as a dvd then it could be a media problem, windows should pick up on the fact a dvd has been installed and that it a blank one.
what happens if you put an original dvd in plays without problem? |

I have no problems reading DVDs, I can watch films, access data discs, etc. The strange thing is that once Roxio was installed the blank DVD was recognised as a blank DVD and the free space displayed correctly although I still couldn't write to it.
I have tried burning a DVD+RW under Ubuntu with the ame result; Gnome Baker tries to burn at 2.4x whether I set the write speed higher or not.
Nero must somehow have recognised the DVD+RW as being capable of burning at 4x when I managed to burn that one disc succesfully, I'm just not sure how.

i'm building my pc.
i'll buy intel p4 processor (630 most probably)
i'm not sure what chipset for motherboard should i choose- thinking between 945 and 925?
so what chipset, or what motherboard do you recommend me to buy for that processor? |

Depends how much you want to spend really, personally I'd choose an Asus or Gigabyte board with SLI and Nforce 4 chipset.
No particular reason for my choice of chipset other than it's what I've used on all of my recent machines and the driver installation and updating is a doddle, only one unified driver to install. Performance wise, Nforce 4 has failed to disappoint me so far.
The overclocking bods have been recommending SIS chipsets again lately though, so if you want all out performance I guess you should go for the latest SIS board.

i have bad experience with asus, gigabyte is quite ok, but recently everyone is recommending me abit for mb brand. also i'd like to avoid nforce, because i'll use separate graphic card so i wouldn't like to pay more if i don't use it. also i heard sata is not so great, so can't choose HDD.

You can get nforce boards with SLI and no onboard graphics. Personally, I'm quite into sata drives and nowadays it's quite difficult to get a good mobo that doesn't have sata, even if it still comes with 2 IDE ports. At any rate, I would suggest that you get one with both sata and 2 x IDE so that you have the choice. Also, later on you'll have the option to use RAID with the faster sata drives if you wish.
Oddly enough, I've had tons of trouble in the past with Abit boards, so much so that I wouldn't dream of using one again 
Just goes to show, it's all down to luck really. I think that as long as you don't use PCChips or MSI or such like, you should be OK whichever board you choose.

-i heard sata disc slows down start-up, but there's no significant improvement in working speed (about 10percent?)
-my imperative is 800Mhz + ddr2 + 64bit + hyperthreading
-i'm wondering if there's any difference (in performance) between 925x and 945p/pl?

Ahh right!
1. The nforce chipset does everything, northbridge, southbridge, onboard sound and grahics. If you use your own graphics card, the chipset is still doing all of the other functions. There is nothing special about the nforce chipset, it's a chipset like any other except many people (myself included) find it to be superior.
2. Sata drives do not slow down system startup at all. They have a higher data transmission rate than P-ATA drives at all stages of operation.
3. I've not come across any info regarding the performance of 925x and 945p/pl systems, so I can't realy comment on that. We only build AMD systems these days, so I've no personal experience of them either, I'm afraid
