I used to own the iPhone 4s and to be fair, it is still one of the best phone I have ever owned.
It is only beaten by the Galaxy Note 2, which I own now.
What I don't like is Apple's lousy and very closed echosystem.
That's the reason why I choose and will be choosing Android for an unforseen future.

@hgautam - that stinks. try finding people locally who have also purchased from the same store (with proof) and compare with them. if you can find someone with a superior screen, you can ask for an exchange. If all else fails, try contacting your local sony support and see what they can do for you.
@cu015170 - as vivftp pointed out, when i meant it will be "incredible" i meant for its device class, which in this case includes the iphone 5s, htc one, lg g2, galaxy s4, and galaxy s4 zoom. obviously, no matter what software magic sony can come up with, Z1 is never going to produce dSLR quality shots. It's not gonna produce high end compact camera quality shots. But, it certainly has the potential to put everyone in that list to shame, including whatever samsung and htc spit out in 6 months at CES. clearly. "small sensor" is relative only to the 1020/808 and standalone cameras (compact and larger). But among android flagships and the iphone, it is the biggest sensor

As McKinley has said problem with Apple products is its very closed ecosystem. You'll be stuck on itunes, and afaik mostly unable to share/copy files between phones and laptops, as well as manage files (something that my 7 year old nokia can easily do). For me it is a huge hassle and inconvenient to use not unless you plan to jailbreak it. With an iphone you can't just plug it in a computer and transfer files right away, there are many restrictions.
iphone is only great if you do mainly basic things on your phone (calls, text, browsing and occasional gaming), and well maybe the luxury of having one.
Android is great because of freedom (simply plug it in a computer and you can transfer files, USB cable is standard and practical, bluetooth to almost any phone and computer directly, USB OTG) and I would say also a cost effective choice.
since we are on the Z1 thread I'd recommend a Z1  of course there are many Android devices out there, so it'll be up to you to decide what to get.

Screen
If there is a lottery then well I feel I got a cruddy screen, since at 50% brightness the viewing angles are non existent almost, at full brightness it is better, but use a lockscreen or wallpaper with lighter colours, and things are not that great. I partly blame Sony's launcher for this, which can be changed but you lose the walkman widget and photos widget. If there is no lottery then I feel Sony could have spent a bit more for a slightly better screen. I feel they are already making a big enough margin on the device.
OS and speed
Fast and fluid, no hick ups yet, had google play crash once when I was first using the device but that was partly because it was downloading around 65 apps in one go. Everything else is sikly smooth, zero lag. I feel it would have been nice if Sony included a dark theme for their OS and not the light one as is used now. Perhaps things will change once 4.3 arrives or 4.4.
Sound quality
Very good for a phone, no X-Series but that is expected. There is a new M-Series walkman from Sony in Japan that features noise cancellation and S-Master MX amp, and you can pair that to the Z1 and use those functions as a headset and I might be investing in this. Sound quality is like a mid-range walkman, think higher E or S series.
Camera
I've yet to test this outside and will try to today but it is cloudy and not that great, but I am pleased with the photos so far, if there is an update or one is coming which is set to improve the quality and lower the noise, then the camera will be great. The camera has major potential, just hope the software team is up to the challenge. At this moment the software is what is holding it back. I do hope more and more people start making new apps for the Camera, since this could help differentiate the Z1 from others. The AR effect may be a gimmick, but it is a fun gimmick. Timeshift is a nice feature, once the software is finalized, timeshift should be greatly improved. The position of the camera lens could be improved, seems to get in the way a bit more than I am used to.
Notification light
This is a major thing for me, since I had it on my old nokia and when I moved to the S2 I missed this feature a lot, and now on the Z1 it is back and I am more than pleased. 
Build quality
Not much to say here, premium, enough said.
I've tried using the NFC function with my vaio pro, but nothing happens, it does register that it found something but nothing happens. The throw capability works nicely with photos I took but not with the stock photos on the device, weird. Perhaps there is something in the manual for the Z1 for the NFC connection to the laptop via bluetooth.
Overall I am satisfied so far, the screen, partly camera and the Sony stock launcher are not too my liking but the launcher can be fixed easily, and hopefully the camera software will be improved in the near term. The screen is another story. I would recommend the phone but if you can wait and the screen quality will get better than I suggest people wait it out.

I used my S2 as the basis for viewing angles. I added the one photo of the Z1 with the lighter coloured lockscreen at automatic brightness and full brightness and the visiblity of the light coloured screen is rather hard. The screen is brighter than the S2 for sure, the colour loss is not as visible here, but then again, this is the gallery where x-reality comes into play. The images are all uploaded in their full original size from my cam.
I will try to do another test with identical backgrounds on both devices, at full and minimal brightness, so no enhancements are being used.

What I think that happens in Z1 is it takes probably around 3MP video (20-30% bigger than 1080p) then it does software stabilization on it and crops to 1080p. That's why the field of view when doing video on Z1 with stabilization is much smaller than it should be.

Well if that is the case I still wouldn't rull out 1080p/60 even with image stablilization because Z1 is powerfull enough even for 4K. SoC wise it's maybe around 5 percent weaker than Note 3 which can perform 4K... Im not saying Z1 will record 4K I just think it could be done if there was bigger ROM (and if you theory on image stabilizaton is wrong (or it could shoot 4K without stabilization). |

Found some of the crappy screen phones in my local store, it is definitely worth waiting a few weeks for phones with the better screen. Size wise, the Z1 is pretty massive for a 5 inch device and I'm not talking about the bezel. it has a large footprint, eagerly awaiting news of the mini version. How are people finding the metal around the sides - does it get scratched and nicked easily? |

well Z1 is a flagship, maybe I called the iphone luxury because here in Philippines, the iphones are the most expensive phones. As well as it is the phone that most women buy here as a luxury which doubles as their fashion accessory

It's only the 16gb Iphone 5 that's cheaper than Z1 but it is only 7 dollars cheaper, plus why buy a 16gb iphone that has no microSD card slot right?
LG G2 is the only one I can see as a competitor to Z1 for now mainly because of price and specs, but LG phones do not have that much good reputation here afaik, and updates are their problem.

I see what you are saying, but I thought you were talking strictly about imaging, and not overall sales/features/size, etc. You can't really ignore any smartphones currently on sale since they are available to you, the consumer, which gives you a choice..
Otherwise, like vivftp said, its all relative.. you can pick and choose what is important to you and eliminate phones..
