I have the exact same 'problem' with the dock...needs to be fixed down better or stuck down...but other than that, its great...not as much of an eyesore as the xperia v dock...
i also have the IS800 and it is the best bluetooth headset bar none...still amazed that they could fit so much tech into so little at the time of purchase...if Sony can refresh this model, it will be amazing...
on another note, after seeing me with my xperia z in hand, two of my friends decided to get it themselves as well...possibly a third later but he is deciding on the htc one when it releases...anyone know if its still number one on the japan mobile sales weekly charts? hopefully this phone will propel sony to at least number 3 in the industry cos judging by the hype and marketing around this, people have been noticing...so many countries have sold out of initial stock... |

Question:
When/where branding is made?
Does the Sony ship already branded phones to providers or providers
brand their generic phones after they get it from OEM?
Would be grateful for the answer.

I believe Sony develop any software customisations to the needs/wants of the network. They then apply the customisations and if necessary put them in a network branded box before sending it out of the factory. I think that's the way it is.
As for the dock, I'm in two whether to open it up and put some weights inside or to use some sort of adhesive to stick it to the table.
Today whilst sitting waiting for my wife in the hairdressers two people asked me about my phone, had an inspection of it and said they'd go get one. First time I've taken my phone out in public.

Hmm. This is actually not true since TMobile Poland told me yesterday that there are constant shortages of Z
and they have no time to customize it
So I believe the real operator branding happens in the operator's factory where they put their soft inside, etc.
BUT my question is if the "clean" devices coming to TMobile are actually having branded or "prebranded" OS
or are just generic polish devices which are seen in PCCompanion as "generic". I ask just because of future upgrades you know.
Anybody else has ideas?

I don't believe any of the networks are set up to handle handsets one by one for loading network apps or customisation. The customisation will be loaded in the Sony factory. The T-Mobile rep you spoke to probably meant that Sony have quoted them a long lead time for loading the customisations and so TM are only dishing out non-customised handsets until they can fill the lead time. Sony are probably prioritising non-customised handsets as they have better sales value.
I may be wrong but the more I think about it this is what makes most sense.
The networks cannot put the time in to developing the customisations in house at the risk of incompatibility without the support from Sony. The better case scenario is to send a list of requirements to Sony and let them develop the customisations and load it at the same time, it stops double handling of the handset and cuts out the risk of buggy FW.
With regards to what stock TMobile are receiving in Poland, if your rep said they are not branding it then they I would guess they are generic Polish devices with maybe one or two Poland specific apps and whatever is standard in the box stuff for Poland.
Also, if the customisations are developed and applied by the network then updates would need to be pushed back to Sony before going to the customer OTA or via SEUS. This is definitely the long way and the wrong way round.

Unfortunately most of the networks customise phones themselves.
Sony might customise for big operators in order to speed up the updates.
But since operators in most of the mid-sized countries customizes their phones, sometimes even the most important updates don't get released at all.
Most of the operators don't care about the updates. I had to flash all my friends X10. Otherwise they would have stuck with Android 1.6.

So anyway I have a big chance of getting generic Z.
Which makes me happy.

@OffLiner
Do you know this for certain? Could it just be that smaller operators don't want to pay Sony to port the updates to a newer version of android?
I just don't see that networks would have development teams of their own for producing customisations AND have the facilities to flash the mods to blank handsets.

Network operators has special divisions just for branding phones.
I am in software development business and I have friends that do this. (in Turkey at least)
But I'll ask about the payment. You might be right about that.

It took me quite some time to download the update, about an hour at 140kbps. Is the PC companion detecting the update for the phone?
If yes, then is the download starting? Is the PC Companion updated? It might be downloading its own update? Once the firmware is downloaded, it takes 5-10 mins to update the phone.
