My apologies for not being able to specifically comment on browsing on PC with mobile GPRS connection. Here is my 2nd attempt.
Just before writing this reply I have redone the speed tests with all the three operators, i.e. Mobilink, Telenor & Warid.
I connected my PC using a bluetooth connection to my i-mate which in turn was connected using GPRS to the internet.
I then opened the internet explorer on my PC and went to the McAfee site which has a tool to check your connection speed. I conducted two tests per operator and the results are as below:-

Mobilink 13.8 and 19.2 kbs
Telenor 28.4 and 32.2 kbs
Warid 36.2 and 39 kbs

Based on these tests I think that Mobilink is only okay for occassional e-mails but not really good for any serious net browsing. Warid on the other hand excels in this area with Telenor a close second.

That was great srmz. Perfectly explained.

Can you tell us the APNs and a bit of settings that you use for PC connection on Mobilink GPRS?

I am interested in Mobilink cuz it offers unlimited browsing and it can prove to be an end to my subscription to my ISP. [addsig]

@radarblip609: i would like to add something here, u can get a DSL connection for around Rs 800 per month, cybernet Hi-speed for around Rs 630-900 per month, if u are based in the major cities of pakistan. I believe that their data transfer rate is much faster and connection is broad-band, so would be much easier for u to download loads of info which i think will not be possible using mobilink's GPRS as it was told that its slowest among the lot!!

Dancom is offering DSL for Rs 950 per month for 256k line upto 1GB data transfer in major cities. U may like to check rates of Paknet's DSL, i have heard that its also very cheap.

If u add excise duty on the GPRS rate it becomes Rs 575 per month. i hope this must help u out.

@SE7:

That would be a solution if one is sticking to a single city and that also a major city.

My job is such that I am always mobile. I dont stick to one city and I have to go to remote areas also.

Thats why I rely solely on GPRS.

And tell me if there are setup charges for DSL? [addsig]

Hi all,

The APN for Mobilink Internet via GPRS is "connect.mobilinkworld.com". There is no need for a username or password. However if you go to the Mobilink website you can find a link for manually setting up your handsets.

Now as far as connecting the PC to the phone goes I use Bluetooth. The advantage I see in bluetooth is that I do not need a line of sight as is the case with Infrared.

To connect with bluetooth your PC and the phone should be bluetooth enabled and both must support the DUN profile. If that is so then once you have paired the PC and the Phone you will see your phone appear under "My Bluetooth Places" on the PC. Double click the name of your phone and then the dial up icon should bring you to the dialog box we are all familiar with i.e. the one which pops up when you are connecting the PC to your ISP through a regular telephone land-line. In this dialog box no need to enter username or password and in the dial number field enter *99# and press the dial button. If all is correct the PC should connect through the phone's GPRS connection to the internet.

Good luck and regards

SE7, Thanks for your suggestion on DSL internet connection.

Do you have any information if "Nexlinx" at Lahore provides a DSL connection.

To get a DSL connection is this something which will be between myself and my ISP or will I have to involve the telephone company i.e. PTCL to get a special telephone line or something.

I will appreciate your advice.

Thanks and have a nice day.

@srmz:

I am sorry i have no idea about Lahore's ISPs, therefore, i cant say if NEXLINX provides DSL or not.

DSL is only between you and the ISP, what they do is, they convert your existing copper line to DSL, as a result you are able to surf the net at very high speed, including high download speed and broad-band. It will also benefit you like your telephone line will not be busy while u are using your DSL connection. As the charges are fixed per month restricted upto a max of data sent and received, normally its 1GB, you can enjoy suring without worrying about net hours getting exhausted or slow download speed. You can easily download updates from Microsoft web site which on normal connection takes ages.

Some ISPs offer their own modem at rent and some will ask you to buy one from them. Consequently, it will become your property even if u decide to change the service provider.

I hope this must have removed lots of ambiguities from your mind, if anything is still unclear, just let me know!
