Both burn for one hour, so that makes them even

Oh, ok. I meant to ask if they both have a constant rate of burning and it does not vary.

Cut one rope at threefourths of its length and set one end on fire?

no cutting or bending allowed. only burning of the rope

So, in same time you fire up both ends of the first rope and the only one end of the other, when the first one has burned fire up the other end of second one. ;-)

That will take 90 minutes and not 45.

No, 1 rope is lighted at both ends = 30minutes while at the same time the other is lighted only at one end = 1 hour. After the 1st rope is consumed (30 minutes has passed) light the end of the remaining rope so it will burn for another 15 minutes instead of 30 minutes. Total is 45 minutes.

They are lighted together so half of the rope that is lighted only at one end will remain after the one that is lighted at both ends has consumed. This means that 30 minutes has passed already. During this time the unlighted end of the remaining rope will be lighted so it will cut it's burning time to half or 15 minutes so all in all the ropes will burn only in 45 minutes.
