For extensive information about everything concerning batteries, take a look at Battery University. This is probably the ultimate battery guide!

ok i have a battery related question but i dont want to start a new thread so i'm reviving this one.

If a particular battery has a life of say 500-700 charge cycles (indicated by manufacturer), then if i keep charging the phone when its at half power and stop charging when its full, does that count as a charge cycle ?

Is the battery really limited to this number of cycles or can it last more ?

what happens after this 500-700 charge cycles ? Does the battery stop functioning or lose its capability to hold a charge ?

Charging when the battery is only half empty does count as a charge.
The battery will simply not charge when you plug it in if you have exceeded the cycles. The number of cycles depend on operating temperature. Conditions under which it operates. Charging using a car charger. Any number of variables. Ion and polymer do not usually degrade in terms of capacity, they simply stop working. Or at least charging.

Because you get the best battery life when you charge it in a power off handy.

turning off while charging will only speed up the charging time .

I agree, since there's no load so the battery will charge faster. I don't see how it could make your battery life better.
resistance is futile.

Ah it's the battery topic again!
The phones will have a charge circuit included, so the charge current passes thru this circuit into the batt. This charges the batt by a constant current/const voltage method until the batt is full. At the full state, the rate of charge decreases and the charge circuit switches off. Also known as delta peak charging. I'm pretty sure that the li-ion don't continue to trickle charge, but the nicad and nimh do, typically at 1/10 current capacity.

Discharging the batt is also governed by a similar process, with the batt reaching a near empty state, the phone will switch off to prevent a full discharge. In a nonregulated discharge, it is possible for the weaker cells to have their polarity reversed. Subsequent charges can't fix this.
It is not advised to fully discharge li-ion batts as it causes them to age faster. Best life is obtained by charging when it reaches 1/8 full, and if the phone has switched it's self off, don't switch on til you charge.
