That's what companies like SE have taught you to expect. No phone may be perfect, but they should at least be built properly and work as advertised, which is not many people's experience of recent SE phones.

It wasn't always this way.

What kind of voice recognition software is that that you can tell your phone to restart and it does it? what other commands can it carry out to?

Sorry only jesting but when i read it it did sound kind of strange and some times the Forum is devoid of some well needed humor IMO.

Marc

I'm talking sign language ie: when I give it the three finger salute (ctrl-alt-delete in windows language) as opposed to it deciding to restart of it's own accord. Actually I know the people who have had bad experience with their own W910 may not like to think that not everyone has had the same experience, but my W910 has been rock solid.

@boinng, I can see why you feel the way you do, however personally I have nothing to really complain about. One thing I've noticed with mobile phones these days, and as I said before I don't find this to be unique to SE but across the board, quality control is shit. It seems to be quite common for a phone model to have a high frequency of lemons, while their non-lemon brothers work normally.

For me, every SE phone I've had works flawlessly (to this day - I still own each one, in perfect working order other than the T610 which was thrown against a wall - works except for bluetooth). The W910 is the first to have bugs, and then only in the video section of the media player as I mentioned.

Regarding what you say about SMS backup, fair cop. Any software (ie: SE PC Suite) with the word "Sony" in it is tainted by the demon seeds of hell This is one gripe I agree with wholeheartedly. All I can say is, use My Phone Explorer and don't rely on the bundled crap. Using MPE I have all my sms's going back as far as my K700.

I also agree with you re: shake control, but honestly never even considered this when buying the W910. It's a gimmick, no more. However other facets of the accelerometer I do like for example j2me support (inclinometer for example and a bouncing ball game I quite like) and auto rotate. tbh W910 has sold me on accelerometer's in phones and I'll look for one in my next phone.

@qvga, in principle I don't disagreee with you, but in practice, the people who are attracted to the branding usually are too unsophisticated to understand much about audio quality (and probably encode audio at 128Kbps), and these people get their monies worth out of the branding. The people who are interested in audio quality are sophisticated enough to realise you have to look beyond the branding and they will do their homework. I think anyone who honestly expects that the name "walkman" is a guarantee of quality is naive.

"walkman" is a package not a level of quality. The package includes music orientated styling, hpm handsfree with 3.5mm plug, bigger memory, a funky design audio player with ergonomics that suit playing music and that's the package. Other OEM's also have music packaging, they just use a different name. So I don't think you can claim the Walkman tag is dishonest simply because it's not the "best" quality audio player available.

I sold my W910i after owning it for a month. I bought my W910i towards the end of June & couldn't sing enough praises of it in the beginning. But then two flaws had hardened my resolve in selling it. I wonder if any Esato members could tell me if these were problems only with my particular unit or if they were common patterns. I discovered that the earpiece volume was so low that there was no way I could hear it on our busy subway or streets. Secondly, I subscribed to the CNN TV service & I found that when one screen changed into another, very often( 20% of the time)people's faces become pixellated for one or two seconds. Did I get a defective unit?

Having sold my W910i, I bought my first C902i. With the first FW, of course it had the usual problems of freezes, pauses in playing music, choppy & sometimes dropped calls. Now my replacement C902i with FW R3BH002 has all those problems fixed. Moreover, the earpiece volume is loud enough for me to hear easily even in a Chinese restaurant during lunch hour!!BTW, no more pixillated faces on CNN.

A lot of Esato members commented that if SE does not pull its socks up & produce products as technologically advanced as her competitors, she is doomed. But nobody has mentioned that her products have a strong reputation for durability. In this part of the world, most people are not well-off enough to buy a cellphone every few months or even annually. Here, we joke that only young people without children buy LGs or Samsungs. It's gameover when you squash the touchscreen gently or drop it even on a carpeted floor!

you are correct in the sense that SE used to have a lot better quality control. And the P990 experience is a BIG BIG part in the dissatisfaction that many "dead zone" users have with SE, but overall SE is not much different to other OEM's in terms of how they use the market to debug their phones. If it were not true, why do they all have firmware update services? I mean despite them claiming it's to "improve" the features of phones over time, the fact is 90% of updates from any OEM are to address bugs.

So my analysis is that SE have lost the high perch they used to have, to become just another manufacturer. They may never reclaim the high ground. But this hardly means SE is doomed.

the UI is easy to use for most people.....unless the user is educationally challenged, that is. most UIs are pretty much the same these days, so there is no big distinction between them. saying that the samsung UI is hard to use naturally follows that the SE one is too.

educationally challenged am I? and its a fact that SE UI is the easiest to use, there is a massive difference between the UI's

the w900 is crap as a phone. very few SEs do have anything in the way of decent reception, call quality, and reliability. and unsurprisingly, none of those qualities are found on the w910.

My W900 was a wonderful phone, and beat the experience i had with the U600 hands down, (had the U600 less than a week, W900 18 months). The W900 has great batterylife, reception, call quality, UI, and has never let me down once. Whereas the U600 ran out of charge halfway through the second day. And are you trying to say the U600 is better as being a phone?

the w910 is meant to be a MUSIC PHONE, yet the audio quality is absolutely dire compared with the u600, and that's not even aimed at being a music phone

The loudspeaker may not be as good but it is meant to be used with headphones, in which the sound quality is excelent. The U600 is a fashion phone and appeals to people who want a good looking phone, normally girls. Because of this, it comes with disadvantages I have already listed.

apart from battery life and 3G, there are no other advantages of the w910. add the glitches and unreliability and the significantly greater expense(SEs are ALWAYS more expensive than they're worth), i know which most people would have.

I actually find samsung phones cheaper than usual. Im not saying its because they are rubbish...but genrally SE makes better phones. And if SE is such a crap company that make phones not half as good as the U600, then why are you on a forum dedicated to SE? Tell me that

The easiest UI to use is the one YOUR most familier with, no more, no less.
I have used hundreds if not thousands of phones and on average Samsung build quality is well above that of SE.
And finally, this is a MULTIBRAND forum in case you failed to notice, everyones opinion counts just the same, on a wide variety of topics and brands.

Well it seams to be swaying far more to SE considering practically all the topics are to do with SE and you can only choose from SE phones to show next to your name when you post. So I'd hardly call this forum multibrand.

Im not saying everyones opinion doesnt count the same, where did you get that from?

Everyone I know whos had a SE says their the best to use and well built. If you find Samsung better build quality then fine, I wont argue about it

Samsung do make good quality handsets. Better than SE or Nokia.

I dislike Samsung so much so that I'm never buying one in this or the next lifetime but their quality is indeed better than SE's. I do think, however, that SE's quality is beginning to improve when you look at the new releases.

Personally, no. But I've got some friends + my father who use samsungs. Honestly, those things are even crappier than Nokias!
When I told my dad that I was going to buy a new handset he offered me to buy it the same day because he wanted to have my K810 . Had to tell him that it wouldn' be released for another 3 months.
Oh, and my godmother - she had some Samsung clamshell and was severely frustrated with it, so I told her to get a SE and she's been happy with her new phone ever since.
I've also heard of lots of other cases involving the unreliability of Samsungs from friends.
That's why I haven't even considered a Samsung as my next phone.

"You make the mistake of reading some people's bad experience as being the ONLY experience a user has of the W910."

a thread asking about the w910 and others was recently created on M-R where someone said this:
"I am looking for excellent sound quality.I like w910's looks but my friends tell me that that's about the only thing that this phone has to offer."
http://forum2.mobile-review.c[....]thread.php?p=730127#post730127

well, that seems to pretty much sum up what virtually everyone are saying about the phone

Well, without trying to sound like a broken record, our website has close on 50000 members, and we get the fewest complaints about Samsung reliability, that's a bigger test sample than your old man and your drinking buddies.
I am neutral towards SE TBH, they are not doomed nor are they flying high at this moment in time.

so some guys friends said W910 is shit? yeah that's conclusive proof, I'll throw my w910 in the bin this very instant....

I'm not gonna go chase up links to people saying w910 is good because it doesn't achieve anything. There are heaps of people here on esato who have said good things about the W910, but you have "happy w910 user" blindness so you won't see them even if I bother to show you. But I have seen them, because I don't have an emotional investment in the W910 being shit the way you seem to have.

Good luck to you mate, enjoy your scorn of the W910 There's nothing like having something to bitch about that you have no direct experience of.

They are not discussing about bad experience but only about audio quality which obviouly samsung is better and does not mean w910 is crap which u r suggesting.
