Proto means prototype, which means they are pre-release testing models. They do not have a guarantee and often they can not have their firmware updated (but it pays to check with the seller).

protos cannot be updated.
though, they can at a cost
they can be flashed via SETool to retail firmware. which means you would have a retail w980. sorta
