I can't help wondering if all these rules and things coming from a book has somehow perverted the actual meaning of the religion?

What I mean is what would Muhammad himself have made of this row? Would he be mortally offended, and demand the death of the cartoonist, and that Denmark and the whole Western world should burn?

Or not? Would he just laugh it off, or simply say, 'that is not acceptable, I would prefer it if you showed my and my way of life some respect and not do anything like that again', or something of that ilk?

The same goes for other religions too. If given the chance, I feel a lot of these prophets would have some kind of sense of humour to some of these things, being able to laugh at yourself imho is another factor in making onesself humble.

Humble like cynical?

Nobody agrees with me!

I don't like the way we've apparently got two 'cliques' on this thread!

Just heard on the radio that the man who was pictured in many British newspapers dressed as a suicide bomber has apologised unreservedly and stated that suicide bombings are very 'un-Islamic'....

...also that he is going back to jail despite his apology for this. His crime? Possession of Crack-Cocaine. I don't know much about Islam, but isn't possession and distribution of illegal and harmful drugs 'un-Islamic' too?

Still, good on him for doing the right thing and apologising and trying to set the record straight. I haven't seen any papers over the last couple of days, but I wonder how many of them that pictured him on their front page as a suicide bomber put his apology on the front page? I bet they'll put on their front pages about him going back to jail though!

EDIT: BBC article on this

I wonder how much of his apology was sincere. Due to the fact he was released early from prison on parole and he must have known once his face was all over the papers for this the terms of his parole had been broken and he could be returned to prison to finish his sentence.

To me this mans act was just as bad as that cartoon, think of how many people have been affected by suicide bombers in Britain. But you don’t see them tearing down buildings, mosques, or burning flags.

I think the man issue is not that Muslims are protesting but how they are protesting.
In the west they are also giving the freedom of speech and have every right too but in the proper manner.

Someone should hand out leaflets to all those fundamentalists with:

"Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in defense of the religion, or by those who have been expelled forcibly from their homes. At the same time, Islam requires one to treat one's enemy mercifully. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees, and livestock. Islam also requires that if an enemy declares his desire to end hostilities and seek peace, the Muslims must do the same."

Written on it.

Yes I was reading about his arrest and imprisonment, what a laugh.

He is obviously a disgrace to his religion, running around threatening murder and torture. He has brought shame to all of the decent muslims around the world. Those placard holders, I think, are an absolute disgrace and they should be arrested, now that the march has stopped. If any such similar vitriol had been displayed any other time then the arrests would have been coming thick and fast. Hopefully action will be taken now things have calmed down a bit

All this was because of a decision taken by one editor of one newspaper in a rather small and vulnerable country.

No it certainly won’t, if the protests aren’t peaceful (as they should be) the brutality will just continue!

Latest news!

Danish paper rejected Jesus cartoons

Gwladys Fouché
Monday February 6, 2006

Jyllands-Posten, the Danish newspaper that first published the cartoons of the prophet Muhammad that have caused a storm of protest throughout the Islamic world, refused to run drawings lampooning Jesus Christ, it has emerged today.
The Danish daily turned down the cartoons of Christ three years ago, on the grounds that they could be offensive to readers and were not funny.

I guess they were thinkin of their target audience, only 2% of the population is muslim thats only 108k people in a population of over 5million.

That by no means excuses the cartoons of muhammed but it goes some way to explaining why they wouldnt publish the jesus ones. Any publication in the world will tailor its material to its main audience.

That is just one more proof (if there was need...) that the responsability is only of the Danish paper and not the whole Danish country, and even worse, the whole western world. [addsig]

No one is trying to justify violence here, get your facts straight!

In case you missed it here is a rehash: violence is unacceptable but you will always get certain elements within any community be it muslim or otherwise who will seek to cause trouble and harm to others.Like after 9/11 hundreds of muslims were attacked and and a some killed purely because they were muslim, now surely we cant sit and lablel every christian or jew here violent...Islam stands for peace and always has done, some fanatics have hijacked Islam to further their own political causees or agendas but that in no way represents islam or the second largest and officially the fastest growing religion on the planet today.

Seems like this debate is going absolutely knowwhere and we are just going around in circles...I think its about time we came to some mutual agreement don't you agree?

Let's agree that in mature societies freedom of expression is a basic human right. [addsig]
