@Aya, yes!  @Brix is this authentic info? I didn't think vodacom would be interested in Vmobile after the scandal that followed the botched deal last year.

Glo GPRS resurrected again at my end this evening. Is it the fear of Mtel GPRS being the beginning of wisdom, or what?

The deal to buy V-Mobile is a near certainty...if it does happen expect good GPRS coverage and the launch of Vodafone Live and their branded handsets.

Vodacom in Naija would be a good thing, as competition will be keener. At least between MTN, Glo & Voda. Mtel? Your guess is as good as mine.
Now, I am really enjoying the full capabilities of my 9500. GPRS went off while I still had the P800, so you can understand what I mean.

@AYA: Vodacom has slowly launched branded handsets which will mostly affect the Pay as you Go segment with cheaper branded handsets. Expect an improvement in services don't know whether they'll be offering the same ones available to SA subs.

Which is part of the issues I have with "these international brands". MTN came in here with obsolete technology. Econet Wireless did the same. I find it interesting that the networks that have been pro-active with regards to modern technology and value-added services are our local, homegrown solutions.
Voda might as well stay home and not bother with Nigeria if they are coming in with the same approach as the other international brands have done.

@AYA: The proof will be in the pudding. I think it will be in their favour to launch innovative products to give them a competitive advantage. MTN and Econet spent a lot of money on getting licences thus there was a major investment in tech but Vodacom will have an advantage which will hopefully reflect in it's services to Nigerian
subs.

@brix: While I generally agree with you, I must also point out that Globacom paid the same licencing fee MTn & Econet paid. Strikingly, Glo paid & got their license 2-3 years after the 1st two (meaning Glo had higher inflation rates and harsher economic conditions to contend with), yet has managed to work miracles in the area of valu-added services.
VAS are gradually becoming the driving force of the Nigerian market now. I dont think that any level of "better" services by any network - without modern VAS - will endear people to that network. At least, the enlightened ones that have hitherto been deprived of things like dedicated and relatively affordable internet access.
Even in the fixed wireless sector, VAS have been entrenched as the driving force for customer loyalty.
For example, while I gripe about Glo's GPRS services, there is no doubt in my mind that sooner than later, they will get things working fine. Truth be told, that's the motive behind my public griping - to catalyse their making things work the way they should.

@brix: Dont get me wrong. We need more operators that will deliver such good experiences to Nigerians. But there is a sophistication that we are also expecting as part of the deal.
I feel posiitive about Voda, in the sense that they desperately need to upstage MTN, and are also not likely to be comfortable trailing behind Glo in VAS. With that kind of desperation and discomfort, I am expecting nothing less than fireworks from Voda if and when they show up here.

Vmobile is a very good network, I've been on the network for 4 months now and I'm satisfied.
They are going to launch GPRS very soon and their services are ok cos I don't have any complaint about them.
If Vodacom can succeed in buying into Vmobile then it will make a good network even better. |

Mamba took the words out of my mouth (or phone) Vmobile has done considerably well despite their cash constraint, and you'll all agree with me that the improvements came shortly after the withdrawal of vodacom, which suggests that they've been implementing vodacom strategies. The entry of voda into the Nigerian market will definitely stir MTN into action in the area of VAS.

Anyone out there with an Mtel SIM? If you don't mind the trouble, I need someone to request for GPRS settings to be sent to his phone, and then copy the settings out and send to me.
Or, maybe I should go buy an Mtel line..... How much is it in the market?
